The Hollands 54H is pretty beefy for a 5” jaw vise. It weighs in at 128 lbs on my scale.

That's 21 pounds more than my Craftsman 5198 Unicorn weighs....:wtf:

That, my child is a L A R G E Five incher...:bowdown::bowdown:

Restore it, and paint it "Arrest-Me-Red"...

And then, you'll own a serious clamper...:thumbup::drool:

Nice one 4Nines i have its big sister the 56H. I also Have a REED 4C and to tell the truth i prefer the Hollands.

Nice! Can you post a picture of your 56H? I would love to see it.

I have a Reed 4C in an electrolysis tank as we speak. That vise is about as beefy as it gets for a 6'' jaw vise, but the anvil horn on the 54H is pretty darn cool.

Haha thanks! I'm partial to the functional and well oiled but rusty look. It took a long time to get that patina so I usually embrace it.

I have been busy and barely able to keep up with the thread. Here are some recent purchases.

This was about 2 months ago, a 4" Yost. Never seen one with this designation; looks like 4 CWK. Nice solid vise, paid $25

Then a couple of says ago I told my wife I was going on a vise run, to which she responded "really?" :( But I explained I had to, one of them was a "bucket list" vise, and like always, she says go for it.

The second vise I got on this run was this Record No 7

Not perfect shape, but still OK, it was $50....this wasn't the bucket list vise, the next one is

And this is the one I would have on a top 5 list of vises I would want to have on my bucket list. Long trips have become difficult for me to do, but I had to for this vise. It was a 6 hour round trip for the 2 vises, but the trip was mainly for the Reed 4C. Initial look, it looks reeeeeal fine! actually, after a good cleaning, this might not need anything else, maybe a bit of polishing on the hamdle, but no restoration needed.

I don't live in a vise heaven area and USA vises are kind of rare, but every now and then I see one for sale and I am shocked and happy at the same time.....and super happy if it finds its way home with me.

This 4C was $175, not a U-**** price, but definitely a great price as far as I am concerned. A real beauty and a real beast....what can I say....I am really happy with this one :)

I dunno, FMC, a 4C for $175 is pretty much U-**** territory in my books...

You got a great deal on that 4C
Around here you could sell it easily for double or maybe triple what you paid. I sold my 4C for one and a half what you paid but mine was in far worse condition and didn’t even have a swivel base or a handle.
I recently bought a 3C in a condition similar to your 4C but I paid way more for a smaller vise.

Wow, you seem to have hit jackpot in succession:thumbup:

Since you are on a winning streak, I suggest you buy a Meg Million lottery ticket (currently at $680,000,000), even after tax and the reduced lump sum payment option, you should be able to buy a few nice vises with the proceeds

A couple finds from this weekend, an Athol 713 adjustable handle vise and an unmarked oval slide vise. For some reason I had it in my mind the Athol had a ratcheting handle, but now that I have one in my hand, I see how the handle works, pretty slick. Any idea who made the oval slide vise? The cylindrical "meatball" and handle ends ring a bell with anybody? Not crazy about this style of vise, but it was so pristine I had to buy it. Other than the surface rust and dirt, it is like new, excellent checkering on the jaws, perfectly straight handle. The jaws are 3" wide, opens to 5".

Congrats FMC! That's a nice group of vises you've been able to acquire. As others have stated, $175 for a 4C is is within "you ****" territory for sure.

Not that you're looking to sell of course, but to give you an idea of current value of a Reed 4C I've helped another member here buy 2 of them this year. One was the same vintage and condition as yours. Cleaned up nicely and BLO'd it sold for $750 locally listed only. The second was a very late NOS w/ snub nose and replaceable jaws that sold for $900 also listed locally only.

I think your entire haul is a "u ****". Some nice iron in that pile!

Nice haul FMC
Record No7's are hard to find, even here in the UK, the rarest size of the lot.

Thanks guys, i am happy as heck. And i know there is some saying somewhere that relates to this, but in the last year i have stopped looking as much as I used to, and I seem to find more nice stuff than when I was trying so hard before :headscrat

Dutch, not sure why....maybe because we were an English colony for years and therefore had many English companies here, but Records are all over the place...and cheap. Sure the odd guy wants hundreds for one, but so many for under $100, even a good number under $50. (I lost out on a No 8 for $20, someone beat me to it)

I would say for every 100 vises for sale, about 30-35 are records, 30-35 are either Mastercraft made in China, or unbranded made in China. Then about 10 made in Canada, 10 made in USA and the last 10 or so being European like Bison, York and some others.

Having mentioned in my previous post about my bucket list or top 5 vises, I was wondering what most have on their top 5 vises....whether you own one or not, just the 5 vises you believe merit top 5 honors.

Not counting stuff like those humongous German vises with 12" jaws, post vises, or anything not falling into a traditional production bench vise, my list would have:

Athol 628
Reed 408 (a 406 would also be acceptable  )
Reed 4C
Wilton C3
Hollands 19 or Reed 109 (29 or 209 would also be cool, if they exist)

Special mention to the Millscott 13; love to have it but not a production vise.
Also special mention for the Bugatti, but I would want to see one in person to see if it merits being on a greatest list, or just on a "cool to have one" list

There are a lot of great vises out there like the Parker double swivelers, Norris Chain, Fisher/Stevens, and others, they are great vises, but would not make my list.

If I had to get rid of every vise and be allowed to own just 1 vise, I think the Reed 408 would be the one. (I know it's big and something in the 5" range would be a better size if you only had one, but with a 408, small jobs might be a bit tricky, but there would be no job it could not handle)

That's my 2 cents, what's on your 5 best vises?

My list is pretty similar to yours....and I'd bet it would be for most people.

Athol 628 for sure. No question.
Reed 408
Hollands 18/19
Parker 436
That Rock Island w/ 8.5" jaws

I'd settle for a 8" swivel Columbian/Ridgid. Really gunning for a 628 though...already told the better half that I will have one.

Your oval slide vise is a millers falls brand. The vise should be stamped on the moving jaw on the top part of the jaw. 3d1300daf6722a139ebb3cf7932a2008.jpg

Thank you Rusty, I'd say you nailed it! I'll inspect the moving jaw closely tomorrow and see if I can find any stampings.
