Sk 42470 with stripped teeth

I’ve got this old diamond logo SK 1/2” ratchet, and I took it apart to try and free up the mechanism after it started to free wheel. I noticed the spring and pin are jammed down into the reversing lever thing.. and the teeth in the ratchet handle itself, are almost worn right off.
I don’t have an sk dealer around here anymore.. so I’ll email sk and see what they say. I’m guessing they will offer to warranty a complete new ratchet?

I'd try a kit. My eyes aren't the best but the teeth in the ratchet head look fine to me.

Up at the “top” of the ratchet head, they are ok, but on the handle side, they’re smoked

These old selectors look larger to me than the current ones.. but do they interchange? Or do you just have to reuse the knob when you put new kits in?

Just curious they had a few "Rare" iterations of the selector knobs in that era that don't fit a standard rebuild kit. If it was a rare one (this one is not) I would be happy to trade you a good one for that one.

They would most likely warranty it but I would feel bad about it, stuff does wear out after being used for 40 years.

Yeah, the op's rat is even older too.
Post WW2 to about 1963

Either will fit and most tend to have a lot of play.

Yeah honestly I would feel bad about it.
I think maybe I should grab a dt kit and try it. At least in that case, there are teeth on both sides of the mechanism and at least one of them will engage with a good tooth, haha

Considering its likely that ratchet is 60-70 years old and SK has had multiple ownership changes since that time frame I think that ratchet has far surpassed its expected useful life. I wouldn't expect SK to entertain a warranty claim and personally I wouldn't even try. If it were me I would buy a new one and support one of the few remaining US tool manufacturers out there. JMHO.

I dont even need another 1/2" ratchet. I was just trying to get this one going again.. And I do sometimes wonder about the warranty abuse with some tool brands. My own snapon guy tells me that he sends in old tools that arent really "broken" and gets credit for them..

I guess even the toughest ratchets wear down. Those SKs are strong. Along with Proto pearheads and a can of PB Blaster I use them to tear stuff down in 50+ year old cars.

Sure, if you ask they will do it, but should you ask? What if in that email she would have said "considering the age of the tool we consider this normal wear and tear"? Who among us would have started throwing fireballs at SK? How they have spent their last dollar with SK and if they can't honor warranties they can keep their tools. I am not saying this is what you are implying Bimmer just illustrating the slippery slope. If you don not need another 1/2" ratchet will you give this one away after warranty?

People just want new stuff for free. Have them send you a rebuild kit and it will work fine (just make sure you clean out all the gunk thats in the teeth. I'm 99.9% sure of that.

I’m not saying I’m going to send it in.. I wrote the email to them asking what I should do.. (try a rebuild kit or?)before I posted here, and they had just gotten back to me. I thought I’d share the email just to show you guys that they would honor the warranty..
Personally I’d rather keep this thing because it’s old and that’s kind of cool.
I need to find some internal parts laying around for one of these. The selector lever has that jammed up pin and spring. It would work just fine as an “at home” ratchet if I got that aspect sorted

I've never seen an example where the pin jammed inside the selector lever like that. Only thing I can think of is that the spring busted and the pin is just sitting in there. Is the pin movable at all? Can you get it to stick to a rare earth (strong) magnet and pull the pin out? If you can, then all you need is a new spring and it should be back in business. I've disassembled, cleaned and put back together many SK vintage ratchets but never had one with this same exact problem.

There’s a mark next to the pin hole that almost looks like it was “peened” and that’s what’s holding the pin in... I can squeeze it with a pair of pliers and it goes down and then bounces back out slightly, So there is a spring under there. I can’t grab the pin at all or pull it out with a magnet 🤷🏻****♂️

Do you have a small Swiss pattern file that you can get in there and file away the offending metal from the edge of the pin hole that is holding the pin in? That pin should move freely. If it was all working properly, when you pulled out the selector lever that pin should have come shooting out from the spring tension.

I tried holding the pin down and using a pick to “bend” the peened area back up, to no avail.. and then actually hit the surface with a cutoff wheel to knock some material off, in the hopes of freeing up the pin.. also to no avail.

Not sure if SK will warranty it since this was pre-bankruptcy SK and Ideal bought them out. Wouldn't bankruptcies invalidate all warranties? Just being the devil's advocate. Give them a call and try.

FWIW, I have tried the 3/8 DT kits in quite a few ratchets, and in my experience, they don't work well at all in ratchet bodies that have much wear. I think if you get a regular rebuild kit, that it will probably work alright.

I dont think my teeth were any better than OP, my chrome is a little better, but its the same gen of ratchet. DT kit performs flawless.

...And that's why they say SK stands for Slip-Kill or Split-Knuckles..
They wear like that because the core tilts and loads the ends of the teeth and misaligns them.

The DT kit came in the mail this weekend. I installed it first thing this morning at work, and while I haven’t actually used it yet, I put a bolt in the vice and tried putting leverage on the ratchet in several different positions and it didn’t feel like it was going to slip, ever.

Why wouldn't you send it in? You asked, they said yes. The good publicity they'll get from this interaction will sell tools for them and cost them exactly

I want to keep this old ratchet. I like it better than a “brand new” tool.

Plus it looks cool in my drawer next to my 1940s/50s SO ratchet, the diamond logo SK roto 3/8”, and the V17 Bonney 1/4” sliding t bar
