Ya you got to hate it when someone has inside knowledge on the goods before it starts. Unless its me I will zoom in every possible photo of a garage or estate sale ad to try and figure out where to go first. My friends say I have a problem

I did the same thing figuring out where stuff was by looking at the photos. It paid off lots of times by not just wandering around looking. While waiting in line I could usually tell the antique people where dressed a little nicer and the tool guys were dressed prepared to get dirty while digging for treasures. One sale I had called a day ahead to ask the estate company about start time. It listed two different times ? I got there an hour ahead of time and the guy said come on in "you would be first in line anyway" I bought the vise and left before anyone else arrived.

I called the estate sale people the day before asking if they would be willing to sell the pair of vises beforehand, but they said no. Apparently once it appears in the listing they have to make it available for sale. Otherwise they end up with some very angry people in line. Makes sense. I looked carefully at the photos in the ad, but they did not give a clue about where in the house the vises were located. Based on experience I figured it was either the basement or the garage, and I picked the garage. I was right, but the garage was packed so full of stuff it was difficult to tell where they were. I have never seen an 8" vise ever go for so little money. It just sucked missing out literally by seconds.

I have had that happen being right behind a guy going into a tool a shed and he went straight to the 4" Wilton bullet marked $20

It happens with anvils too.---On Labor day me and the Wife always go to many yard sales.---They are everywhere.---She looks for clothes and Grandkid toys and I look for rust.---We had just parked at her uncle's sale and as I got out of the car, a man was paying for a 225 lb. anvil.---I asked her uncle how much he sold it for.---("$125.00").---I was sick.---It was a nice one too, but I didn't think to check the brand.---I said ("let's go, I don't want to look at anything else").---So we went down 58 about a 1/2 mile to another good sale that always had a lot of tools for sale each year, and just as I was getting out of the car a fellow was rolling a 100 lb. anvil to his car on a hand truck.---Of course I had to ask, ("how much did you give for that anvil"), ("a $100.00 he said").---I told the Madam ''I'm going home, you can go back out if you want to.

15 years ago guys were selling anvils for scrap weight. Now people are listing them for $1000. Now that I need one, of course.

I hear that... 15-20 years ago, I remember seeing them at the scrap yards and wondering who would want one.... now that I could use one.....

I'm up in Rochester, about 1.5 hour drive from Springville. We call that part of the state "The Southern Tier". Lot's of american iron down in that region....it's only about an hour drive from Erie, PA. Lots of Reed/Hollands around there.

Ahhh rochester.. used to do the Tourning Stone PGA golf job up there. I spend alot of time in buffalo, erie, pittsburgh, etc. I see more iron in chicago than all of the older steel cities... kinda makes you wonder where they all went...

Picked up this 88-1/2 locally from a really nice guy. I think he said it was original to his family. I cant remember it was cold and it was the size I needed. Missing the pipe jaws which I wont use, but the casting is in very very good shape. Most of the time there is cut off wheel marks along the jaws or what not.

I paid 5 bucks for this Wilton USA woodworking vise at a neighbor's garage sale.
What can you tell me about the vise?
I'm interested in when it was manufactured.
Also what is the purpose of the little lever in the middle that moves the rectangular steel piece up and down?

It was "Small vise day" today - I picked up 2 mini clamp-ons, and a 2-1/2" Reed.

The Black one is my 5th Colton Patent, adn second smallest.

That pop up piece is a "dog" and is used to clamp a piece of wood against a bench dog that is inserted into holes in the wood workers bench.

Commonly used when planing wood down.

Picked up this 88-1/2 locally from a really nice guy. I think he said it was original to his family. I cant remember it was cold and it was the size I needed. Missing the pipe jaws which I wont use, but the casting is in very very good shape. Most of the time there is cut off wheel marks along the jaws or what not.

Saw one just like that (88 1/2) at a market nearby, but the front part of the base was broken off and the spindle didn't work. It didn't have the pipe-jaws either.

Nice YORK, Mayer.---I wish Mr. Hugh W. had of made a combination YORK in the vintage fat body line.---Like say, a 150C.---May just have to cast my own.---They make a combo today but they don't look like the old YORKS.---I noticed that they still use the lateral grip pattern on their jaw inserts on most of their units even today.

Just one observation, generally the slide is not paints as it will scratch In use and paint could possibly hinder operation if toleratonces are tight. The nose (meat ball) is also generally not painted. But it is your vise and you can restore it anyway you wish

I painted mine many many years ago on both the daily use CP 974 and the welding vise. The moving/mating surfaces, I completely agree, with with the possible exception of the homeowners exposed crew vises. I think those nearly always got painted?

Here is a RS wilder I picked up from everybody’s favorite auction website. I must say of all the vises I own there unique shape is probably my favorite aesthetically speaking. The two moving jaws also work pretty well for work holding. The handle is pretty beat but the rest of the vise is intact and I wanna do a full as stock restoration one of these days on it.

The 2 small clampers are nice, but the Reed is a beauty and rare site. Outlaw, I forgot to mention, a few posts back where myself and others were listing our top 5 or bucket list vises, most of us had humongous and behemoths on our list. You on the other hand had practical, realistic and a nicely varied list.........good for you

The baby Wilton looks beautiful, but the Parker is an absolute killer. Although I agree with Gman, not painting the slide and "meatball" would have been better, still an amazing restore....looking forward to seeing you next restores

Are you sure that is a 98 and not a 93? In the picture it looks like one of those old tractor seats sitting next to it. I would think a 98 would dwarf the seat.

I do want to pick up a Wilton "bullet", but only if I can grab it cheap enough.

Was going off what the OP said on another thread, not certain myself.

I posted that on the Garage Sale thread. I did think the 3 looked like an 8, but this had 4-1/2” jaws and was no behemoth. Has to be a 93. Puts the $200 price tag in a different category.
I think the twin or clone has to be a reflection from a mirror. I don’t specifically recall a mirror being there, and stuff was pretty densely packed, but I would have noticed another vise on the same level. Further, there is some object just sticking up behind the slide and a blob of white paint on the slide, both reflected in exactly the same spots.
