so the garage is still under construction but getting there. I would like to poke around here to see what ideas some of you have.

The garage is 600sqf with ten foot walls and cathedral ceilings. It will be used mainly to store a car during the winter months and possibly do some work on it. I would like to keep the garage at 15 degrees celsius or go as low as 10 maybe.

As of now I have bought two 2500w baseboard heaters but I think that this will cost plenty to run.

any other ideas or are these baseboard heaters my best shot?

My 672 sq ft garage in alberta averaged 3000btu/hr requirement over last winter to maintain 5°C. 3000btu is basically 1 kw. Id say you have the capability, but do you have the wallet for it.

1kw x 24hrs a day x 30 days a month x 8 cents a kw.

So 60 bucks a month if my 6am math is correct. My garage on gas cost 9 dollars a month to heat.

Being in QC with cheap electricity if you dont need A/C and only need minimum/occasionnal heat your best bet is a 5000w ceiling mounted heater with a fan like the Stelpro Dragon.

would that take a while a heat up the area for when I would need to work in it?

Considering a new, well insulated and sealed construction, and average outdoor winter temperature, it should bring the indoor temp. up rather quickly.

My garage is ~525 sq ft with 11 ft ceiling height. I keep it around 8 celcius and it takes about an hour to reach 18 celcius when it’s like -20 outside.

There is one review of the Dimplex unit on Costco’s web page and it’s not so good !

Don’t even blink at buying a Modine Hot Dawg natural gas heater. I am at 576 with 9’6” ceiling out in Alberta. Had that sucker up to 32*C yesterday baking paint. I also run 2 fans when I want to and your cathedral ceiling would benefit from that. I would run some beams below the peak and mount the fans to that for optimum heat/air movement yet retain the max head room of such ceiling.

Your 5000w unit will be around 17,000 btu. If gas is available, the Rinnai EX-22 would be the right product for you. Not sure in Alberta, but Fortis BC has a $750 rebate on them. They are not cheap, but install easily and everything you need for that install is in the box including the vent. Heat at floor level and I can tell you from experience, when you are on a creeper and it is sub-zero outside, that is nice.

I have a 450sqft garage in southern Ontario with a 50,000 btu hanging gas furnace about $500 from TSC.
Best thing I ever put in the garage.
It costs me a few hundred dollars to keep the garage at 60 all winter long.
I can open the overhead door in January and have it back up to 60 in 30 min.

I did find that this best to meet the garage at 60 instead of just when I’m working on there. The first winter I would lower it to 50 during the day and crank it up to 60 after work we i was ready to work out there. It would cycle a lot and my tools were cold, my garage has slot of thermal mass so keeping it at a set temp worked best for me.

I have 500 sqft and am located just northeast of Montreal.

I have a 10' flat ceiling.

Insulated to R13 in the walls, R31 for the ceiling.

I have a 5000w heater with fan.

I also have a high mounted fan to circulate air in the garage.

The heater does not need to run all the time.

On the coldest days in January, it will run 2 or 3 times an hour for about 5 to 10 minutes to maintain 55 degrees (I keep it set low).

When I need it warmer, It will heat to 70 degrees quickly...never timed it...but I would guess less than 30 minutes.

little update,

here is one that I picked up at costco today, I saw it was 140$ which is a solid price according to specs, but the reviews seem to be soso. the main claim is that the fan just doesnt turn for if kept still for a season.

that will heat your garage decently. My friend has similar size electric unit from C Tire in his garage and he really likes it. His new and insulated garage is about 500 sq ft.
