Need a main screw for my Desmond Simplex 300. Decent shape, other than the sheared off handle.
5/8" diameter

5.5" long for the threaded portion
(I did not find a "Vise Parts Wanted" thread after a half-hearted search - is there one?)

Sad that any Wilton "bullet" can bring in top money on eBay and a gem of a vise like your Odin, can bring in good money, sometimes sell for less because many do not know what it is.
I have seen many pictures of the Milscott 13, but that one is impressive. The size of it in comparison to the pickup is amazing!
No offense but I don’t believe his Odin would sell for less then a crummy Wilton. In fact I believe his vise is easily worth $2500 bucks. And if I’m wrong which I would be very pleased because I’d hump a fellows leg for one haha. My main vise addiction is unusual vises made in my home state of Illinois of which that vise was born breed and created in. If your meaning other brands in general then please do not take offense to my post because I know your a true blue vise enthusiast.

Make up my mind for me.
Parker 974 for $2.06 per pound
Parker 974 1/2 for $2.33 per pound
Both in good shape but could use some cleaning up. Both have the wrenches.
I would probably keep whichever I end up buying. Don't think I could flip easily at that price.

I decided to go with the Plastikote T-10 Machinery Gray. I think mine is one of the oldest 519x vises so far at 4/1948. Some of the newer ones that have been shown on here are a lighter gray. This 5196 had some original paint left that was lighter that what I could find on the 5197. Its just my best guess. I want to keep it as original as possible but after seeing Mr. Scotts work in person I am trying very hard to resist new jaws!

If they are in the same shape, I would go with the larger vise. But if 974 is in better shape than 974 1/2 then I would go with the former

A Parker 974 weighs about 75 pounds so you’re talking a price of about $150 right?
Around here, nice ones bring more money than that.
Think of it as an investment.
But realize that this is GJ where one should not expect unbiased advice regarding whether or not to buy a particular vise.

I tried to sell the investment angle to the wife but she asked a simple question, are you going to ever sell any of them (and I do not) and followed by the comment that they are not an investment if one does not intend to ever sell them. So at least for me it is back to drawing board to find another lame excuse
Its an investment she can sell off when you pass away. The date of which she may hasten depending on how many vises you buy

They're both in great shape. The 974 1/2 was spray-bombed red but can be easily stripped. I don't want to post pics for fear of revealing my source.

Live311, I'd go with the larger.---At 76 lbs., your looking at $177.00, but 17 more lbs. than the 974, and looks like more depth of throat from the pics I've seen in this thread, and opens a 1/2'' wider.---Cost you a little over $50.00 more but a pretty good size vise for the big jobs.---And if you have got to keep it, then you ought to get it right to suit you the first time and avoid buyers remorse.---But I have to admit that I'm biased toward big vises cause I use a big one daily and like the heft.---In the end, it's you're cash, your choice.---And condition is factor #1 in your decision.

Shift, Thank you! They sell all kinds of great "pinup" decals on amazon. I think this one was about $6. I think they have a craftsman welder girl too that might go on one of mine

That looks like the mighty Reed #66. 170-ish lbs, will accept a 13" OD pipe. They still sell them for about $2500.

I think that is the largest pipe vise made for consumer market. I saw one in person - hard to really understand how large it actually is until you are next to it and the top of the spindle comes up to your ribcage.

It is easy, just figure out how much the two vises cost. Then get twice that amount of money in cash and hand your wife half of it - Telling her you don't care what she does with her money that is equal to your vise expenditure money. After that SHE will be trying to find vises for you to buy.

This^^^. Mrs. Bulletpruf (aka The Long Haired General) is decidedly unhappy about the proliferation of chainsaws (over 100), vises, anvils, musclecars, etc. that has taken over our garage, two 10x30 storage units in Georgia, one 10x20 storage unit in NC, and one 10x20 storage unit in Texas...
However, I have been selling stuff, and whenever I sell something, I make it a point so share some $ with her. No, she doesn't get half, but she appreciates a bit of lunch money here and there.

Damn! that is a nice color. I hope the one I ordered comes out close to that. I prefer the slightly more blue tint over the gray.
My little $40 score today. All in all it's in pretty good shape.. I'll check to see what the jaws look like here in a little while.. Everything moves nice and free though.

I’m curious in that I have a Yost and the bases of both of ours look identical. Like exact copies... identical. However, the jaws on mine use a lip rather than a slot to attach.
Anyone know if there is a relation?

Do you mean the vises are the same, or just the swivel base? I looked at the pics for not very long and I can spot at least 3 differences in the vises themselves, not counting jaw differences. I don't believe there is a connection, although stranger things have happened.

Been doing this routine with guns for years
I don’t have a good picture to show it right now, but the swivel bases are identical. Many of the features of the vise itself are similar but that’s neither here nor there. Just curious if the bases somehow crossed models or if the design was just so straightforward that it was used throughout manufacturers.
I also am curious because I need to find a better swivel lock solution, and if I can use parts from other manufacturers that would help.
I will try and take a picture tonight of what my base looks like for comparison purposes.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has run across this new listing on eBay. $225 for an 8" jaw Parker initially had me wondering how far Galena, Kansas was from a relative of mine in Oklahoma.
Spolier alert: the seller states the vise was stored outside upside down and water froze in it and caused it to crack. It's okay to cry again VA.....I was too! Really too bad because other than the missing collar, it looks like it was in really good shape.
BTW that's a 4C in the background of the pic for a little scale. The 4C is for sale in another of the sellers listings for a measley $750 as it was not left outside to die in the cold.
