I found a 5/8” drive short overstrike 1” socket at an estate sale on Friday. I put it with my other old Snap-on stuff.

Stromberg T20139 Snap on socket. Someone posted a set of these a while back. 3/8 drive. 12pt, the little wrench has no factory marks, maybe some sort of ref wrench/

I think the little wrench is for oxy/acetylene bottles. The valve stem especially on older bottles often didn't have a wheel and you needed a wrench. Maybe the newer ones sometimes don't have wheels been a while since I've played with oxy/acetylene.

I could see that. Those wheels have a square broach like that, not far fetched they could have made a wrench for them.

I have seen some presto-lite versions of them. They look identical.

I picked up the remains of a 1944 1/4" set today. Tm5e sliding t, tm60e extension, and three sockets with the E code. I figured they'd be 9/32", but nope. Does this mean they were civilian rather than government?

Tm is 1/4". Military used it as well. M is 9/32

The 9/32” drive was a favorite of the Air Corps but wartime GMTKs all called for 1/4” drive. Snap-on started 1/4” drive in ‘43/‘44 and they also continued to make 9/32” stuff through the end of the war. I think the ratchets were the same except for the internals.

Actually started earlier. Here is a 1938 snap on gm 70n. Early 1/4 snap on very rare. Note no screws in faceplate. I have yet to find any sockets for it.

I think the GM70N rat was the only 1/4 dr tool made until 1944. There were some ref. rats with 1/4 dr female in the 30s, you had to use a 1/4 to 9/32 adapter to use them on sockets.

That's what my research shows. It was a 9/32 dr M70 rat with a drive plug assembly that had a 1/4-inch drive stud instead of a 9/32-inch drive stud. But Otg's (with no removable assembly) puts a wrinkle in that a little in that there is not removable drive plug. :headscrat

I remember you showing me that before, Otg, I just didn't notice that it didn't have a removable drive plug before. Even CS-o talks about the easy conversion of 9/32 units to 1/4 with the removeable drive plug, then going full bore 1/4 (except for some mil customers) with sockets and other handles etc in 1944. This 1937 rat was something else entirely.

It's in the catalog up to 42, but I think the design without the faceplate screws only lasted through 38. Here is the removable plug fridge ratchet with a 1/4 and a 3/8 plug. There Was A 9/32 plug As well

Well we are all wrong.
The GM70L 1/4 rat with a 42 code. shows in the 39-45 cats
Attached is a GM70M with a 43 code.
Attached is a GM4 driver with a 37 code (shows up in the 37 industrial cat)

Attached is a GM5 driver no code but only shows up in the 37 industrial

Also the 37 industrial shows 1/4 dr socks. with a GM code.

So: the GM70N would not have screws, was replaced by the GM70L in about 39. Not to say that there are no GM70N with screws. you never know what will show up.

I found a couple of 3/8" speeders today. The dark one is a ferret f4d with an E date stamp. The other is a newer fv4.

I found this 1941 little Blue Point DBE wrench yesterday at an estate sale and a big punch at another. The big punch doesn’t have a date code that I could find.

If all the snap on dykes were made by FSP, I think maybe these too, but the pattern is diff, but also these have the BP logo, not seen in this era
