The lids on the 5 gal buckets stay on very well. Just take your full buckets to a quick lube, remove the lid, and pour it into their under the car drain tanks that have the big funnel on the top. Very hard to make a mess. Piece of cake.

That's a classic "Newark Oil Change".

I would think a quick lube place would frown on taking oil from a DIY oil changer. I dunno, I never tried, I gave up on doing my own oil changes years ago for several reasons, disposal being one of them. My local quick change place does a decent job for $19 and the 10 min it takes. They haven't stripped out my drain plug yet.

Any facility that performs oil changes is required by law to take your drain oil for no charge.

Mark,
See if there is an automotive machine shop near you and ask them to save the containers that Sunnen honing oil comes in. It is what I use and they are great and very easy to pour out of at the recycling place. The older ones were a real thick sturdy plastic. The newer ones are a thin plastic but they work just as well.

They hold five gallons.

X2. Those containers work great. I've been using 4 of the older heavy duty 5 gal. ones for over 20 years. They have a tight fitting cap and a built-in vent. Got mine when I worked in a automotive machine shop.

I use empty 5 gallon cooking oil jugs I got from one of the cafeterias at work, one for oil and one for antifreeze. They have a ~3" cap and it seals well.

Just found these 6 gal containers on CL for $4ea. I see a tight lid and a vent. These seem pretty common and available.

^^ This ^^

These containers are called carboys. We get windshield wash concentrate in them. Look for a local oil distributor - they may have access if they fill their own ww concentrate, could get you an empty from one of their customers, or could sell you one. Or, you could buy the concentrate for 25 - 30 bucks and wind up with about 21 gallons of -20 washer fluid and a "free" container..

Any of you guys have an easy and unique way to pour from a 5 gallon bucket?

Use a lid with a pour spout or get one of the screw on spouts. Always pour with the spout on the top side of the bucket, not the bottom. This will leave a little air space and provide more control over the flow and prevent chugging. Also, you probably still won't want to fill the bucket completely, but should be able to fill to at least 4.5 gallons.
