That's pretty cool. At a quick glance it almost looks like wood. I picked up a vise a few weeks ago that looks like it was made in shop class.

Looks to be made from 1/4" flat sheet and possibly a shop project like ken w. said his might be. It's pretty cool, but from a practical stand point, it would probably have some flex when an object was well tightened in it's jaws.

Not if it was a learning project or an assignment for a class. If you are beginner at working metal you are going to be much better at it by the time you make a working vise like that.

Here are a couple of pics of the shop made vise. At first I thought it was pretty crude , but the more I look at it , I think it's not a bad job at all. Not the greatest welds but ok. I think I would have made the base thicker , but it works. I painted it red.
