What is this tool ?

I found this “combination “ wrench with an unusual pairing of tools.
Marked on one side Wright 81900 and nothing on the reverse.



I assume it’s special tool, but not sure what it would have used for.
Any help would be awesome.

I'll look it up by the part number later, but that's Wright Aeronautical, not Wright Tool & Forge. It may have been modified.

That's a weird one. All Wright Aeronautical part numbers are 80000 series, so that's what fooled me. Strange coincidence. But what's with the Dodge wrench? Is 81900 a Wright Tool and Forge part number or a Dodge part number?

I believe that that is a Wright aircraft engine tool. The Dodge Chicago plant built most of the 3350 engines for B29's in WW2 and their engineers apparently made a significant number of improvements...maybe that explains the tool marked "Dodge".....maybe not.

Hey Lugz. Look up Wright Cyclone rocker arm clamp and see if it doesn't look like that tool would fit the screw.

You nailed it. The quickest access source I have - 1943 British Admiralty Fleet Order (they used the same engines and tools! ) - has no pics. But I am sure that's it.

Might as well jump into this one as well as the two I posted! The Wright 18900 is .426 I.D hex female end x .598 o.d. of the flat tip.

unrelated to this thread but the one I posted on the Herbrand thread the hex female is .436 x .523 hex end w/hole thru x .243 i.d. bar hole opening. The mystery continues!!

Note that the "Item No." is just an arbitrary one-up series key for the pictures to the stock numbers down below, where the WRIGHT wrench is identified as 81900.

Yes, thanks for all the help-much appreciated. The one I have is flat all the way across the adjustable end. Maybe there were two different styles? I'll keep looking-never know what one can find!!

I saw that. Unless there was a center recess in the slot, that would inhibit, not help a good fit. But I have never seen an example of one like that, and, since the figure is an artist's rendering, it may be a mistake. Or, as alton suggests, two different styles for two different screws. Someone who has actually seen the rocker arm clamp screw on these Wright engines may be able to clear that up: R-1820-40, -50, -54, -56, -60, -62, -66, -87, R-2600, and R-3350-8 and -14.
