I’m a Hay Budden guy myself but I might have a Trenton or two.
I can’t read the number but it must be low. What are you going to do with it?I just cleaned up a Hay Budden 57#...

It’s a beautiful piece and definitely genuine. The tool steel top would indicate an earlier model. Those are going for a pretty penny these days. I swear I can see a faint 2099_ on the front foot.Sorry to hijack the thread... I'm done now.
I agree on the tool steel and I believe it is genuine.
It has great rebound and clear ring.
The it what appears to be a sideways 8 under the horn, good eye!
Here's two more pictures, you can barley make out the "57" weight marking.
Thanks!
Mike
I finished up the little wilton cadet. I got the owner to throw it in when I bought the Morgan 160 and the Craftsman 5197. It came out pretty good. Cutting that welded plate off the base took waaaaaaay to long but I am glad I did it. I never did figure out if there was supposed to be a dust cap on the end![]()
A. Wow, you have a really nice garage.
B. Why is there a 275lb vise in your living room

Looks great. Those jaws look so good that I thought you replaced them some some of Kevin's at first, but I believe they are the ones that were on them, right?
Mayer, yes they are the jaws that came with it. They do have more chips on the under side I flipped them over. Thanks![]()
My Wilton Flip Grip (tilt) Vise needs a tune up
Questions are
1. This is missing the main handle- guidance as to length and material to make one?
2. Is/Was there a bushing in the dynamic jaw to take up the slop in the screw?
3. Is there a parts diagram as to what came with the vise as for jaws inserts?
That's an early example of a very nice Prentiss swivel jaw stationary base. Seems they are more common in the swivel base variety. I agree with Drives, most likely a #3.A Prentiss swivel jaw 4-1/2" and a no name leg vice with 3-3/4" jaws. The Prentiss has no numbers on it at all (except a 13 underneath the slide which may be a date code perhaps?) which is weird, except "Prentiss NY" behind the swivel jaw.
Weight : 56 lbs
This is going to take some refurb to look anything at all, plus I think getting the pin out of the swivel will be way harder than my Parker was since there's no convenient hole in the base to knock it out through. I see some serious electrolysis in its future!
Would I be right in guessing this is a #3 Prentiss?

I've included a catalog page that I cropped to just show that variety of Prentiss. The page does show the vise with script style writing, much smaller "meatball" and removable jaws which are characteristics of the next generation of Prentiss vises, most likely 1920's to 1930's.
I also have a Prentiss swivel jaw with cast in jaws and the Prentiss, NY behind the swivel jaw and when I was researching age the consensus seemed to indicate that Prentiss patented their removable jaws in 1911 so yours would have been manufactured prior to that.

What was the original color of Prentiss vises?
My Prentiss swivel jaw is marked with the model number. It's a no. 21 with 5 1/4" jaws and listed at 109lbs. I found it on FB marketplace in May of this year. The seller was about 60 miles away but actually had it delivered to me by one of his co workers who lived in my area. I paid full asking price of $40.
It's dirty little secret is that the screw was shortened by a couple inches at some point in it's 100+ year lifetime. It's really not that bad, it just doesn't open the full 8".
My wife wants me to leave it as is because when we buy our new house next year she wants me to make it into our mailbox holder. Picture the vise on a metal pole or decorative stand of similar patina with a regulation size mailbox secured in its jaws. It's not a sure thing yet and I'm still envisioning how to attach the mailbox to the vise without welding or bolting into the vise. I figure it will be easy to disable the vise from opening or closing when the handle is turned so as to keep the mailbox from being crushed if someone decides to give the handle a couple turns. I'll just replace the nut with one I'll make that just gives the screw a smooth barrel to go through or rest in. Ultimately though it's all just an idea she's put in my head and not a sure thing. And yes, she is a keeper for sure, my wife that is!

Speaking of Prentiss vises, I passed on a very small one at the tractor show that looked to have the swivel jaw welded up.
I did pick up a small Stanley that too had been welded, this one to a base plate, Too cute to pass on.
Anyone know the maker of the big red clamp on vise at the bottom. Looks to be the big brother of the Stanley Victor Jersey no.743 on the left. The red one has no markings.
Brian
Brian the big red one probably a Stanley as well. I have an unbranded Stanley, although it is the lighter duty style, it almost the same color. They probably did a bit of "badge engineering" for other companies.
Thanks. The Prentiss was the best of the bunch and the original pin is under that cap that somebody jammed on there. Originally I went for the Prentiss but once I saw the other vises not being used I made offers. It was a valve company that was downsizing. I’ll keep my eyes open for that 608 base, that would be a nice addition.Smitty, excellent hall.---The #22 is a beauty.---Were they all three advertised or did you go to see about one and found the rest there?
You know if you find a swivel base for that 508, it becomes a 608.---Of course you might have to do some restamping.
