Picked up a second Craftsman RAS in two weeks, this one for $50 off Facebook Marketplace. This 50's vintage Power Bronze saw will be hard to scrap--its looks so space age!8a8310f9efe053c63ae3e0498890b90a.jpg1dadde5f79636f3fe4698cc0232db2ee.jpg394b5f784294ecae470bffee0c26a5b2.jpg

Wow. A Stutz Bearcat, a 1956 TR3, and a 1950 Jaguar Coupe. I like the coal stove on wheels (at least I think that's what it is...) in pic 96 and the stone tablet with the torch in pic 82. I wish I was flush with a flat bed!

Picked up this BFW (Big F****** Wrench) up today for a few bucks. Anyone know what they were used for? I found a catalog online from Billings from 1948 that lists it as an “Engineer” wrench. Nearly 4 feet long with a 5” opening. Has to weigh at least 40+ pounds. High Torque Wrench in picture for idea of size.

Honestly not too sure what to do with it, is it worth anything? Or mostly wall decoration?

vildly.jpg

nice, real nice, that size i ain't seen b4. i wish 2 add it to my big wrench collection.

Those are decent saws. I have one that I bought from the guy who I worked for starting in high school. He bought it new and who knows how many houses it built. When we built our house in 77 the motor died, so has that vintage replacement. He retired and I bought the saw. Still my 'on-site' work saw but does not see as much use these days.

Let me know if you scrap it out - I'll have to check but think I could use a couple of non-motor parts.

LUG: again nice job diffusing the lifetime guarantee and buying broken tools issue that really would even be a mess as a thread. i've got plenty to say too and have at times, but it falls on deaf ears most of the time.

ALL: what is it about medical carts and stainless that draws me in? well i'm trying to ORGANIZE my garage and storage. with limited space i'd still like to have quick easy access to the back of my 20x20 unit so these carts with the costco black and yellow storage boxes on them might work. with the rails on this one the straps holding in the boxes won't have to be the only support.

when I get rid of my storage unit eventually this cart can be used outside to hold firewood or lumber or whatever. I might have to change out the wheels cause it's been rolling on gravel, but it was pretty cheap and it's solid.

Are you sure you want to part that one out ? Looks in fairly good shape. That is an accura arm saw which holds its measurements well. Sad to see a good piece of machinery be ruined

Yeah, I may have been bewitched by this bronze beauty when the guy hit the switch to demo it. It purred right up to speed and then, when he turned it off, the motor took a good 30 seconds to spin down. I may have a sacrificial lamb lined up to take its place. I'll post this weekend if the deal comes through.

I would not hesitate to recall the newer rats but those old quality units from the 50’s, I would probably hold off on! Their quality was top notch

Dang that Fairmount roll up is sweeeeeet! So nice that I would put my WWII wrenches in there even though it's vinyl. That italicized logo is 50's, but the triangle monogram goes all the way back to their founding. Awesome find, 3eeb.

Hmmm...I posted this claw hammer head a few pages back (part of a multipurchase), and have wondered about it since. “Phoenix” in a box with no COO. Nothing on the net so far, but weirdly, one (with handle) for eSale just a couple miles from me. Thought that seller’s pics might shed some light on age, but I draw no conclusions.

That old Williams flex head is very cool. Never seen one before. Still looking for my m-52 1/4" five ratchet. Have got all others I know of. You just added one I didn't know existed.

Wanna let it go? Shoot me a pm if interested!

Cleaning out an old folding stretcher kit I found a couple of these LightningPak heat units. They have the look so I pulled them out for a couple pics. A quick online search didn't turn anything up but the packaging was pretty neat and has a civil defense or military look to it. One of them is pretty rough but the other is nice. I wouldn't doubt it would get hot if I added water. Ed.

Ed,

Hard to see the contract number without a zoom shot, but if that's a "DSA" (Defense Supply Agency) I see, followed by an 11-digit Federal Stock Number, it's from 1961 to 1974. For future reference - since you seem to run into a good deal of militaria stuff...

> Any marking that looks like this (41-S-1076, 38-B-3345, 13-O-1530, etc), sometimes with a prefix (e.g., N41-S-1076), is a phonetic Federal Standard Stock Catalog number, often referred to as the first FSN, from 1934 to 1952. Administered by the Treasury Dept.

> Any marking with a "DA" or some other prefix or no prefix and an 11-digit FSN (Number groups separated by hyphens, don't count the hyphens, e.g., 5180-698-7964) is from 1953 to 1961.

> Any marking with a "DSA" and an 11-digit FSN is from 1962 to 1974.

> Any marking with a "DSA" and a 13-digit FSN, adding "00" into the old FSN for a COO code placeholder, is from 1974 to 1977.

> Any marking with or without a "DLA" (Defense Logistics Agency) and a 13-digit NSN (and much more likely to actual have country codes (NATO, very contemporary, not vintage) is from 1978 on.

ORC, here is the original 1933 patent.
Rose-Derry Company manufactured them. Your one looks to be 1965 and the other 1967?
I found a post on a different site that claimed the heat-to-weight compared to the disposable ones is 30:1 in favor of the disposable types. There are a few for sale on eBay with the patent number and aesculapius symbol.

Don't know if there's a connection, I've seen the Phoenix brand on Colton pattern mini-vises. I have several in sizes 1-3", some with Phoenix, some without. Maybe Outlaw will weigh in - he has a bunch too.

Thanks for the info on how to recognize date coding on some of these items Lugz. Looking at the outside packaging it looked a little older but the printed direction sheet stuck to the canvas definitely looks mid 60's, especially the little paper water cup. Ed.

Thanks and good info LS....I guess this is an example of where more modern, even disposable, products prove to be quite the improvement over the older iterations. these have probably been in the old stretcher and blanket box since it was new. MSHA requires us to have both onsite at all times at a mine but fortunately I've never had to use one. Ed.

Since these are older it's recommended to pour in a whole cup of water very quickly and shake vigorously.

Yeah they’re neat and a different kind of drive tool. I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the table, and from a seller I like made it better.

Thanks, though I have to add it to the Williams flex head collection as it’s font is different than the other Vulcan one I have. I’m planning a related post real soon.

Yes a very nice tool. Finding Blackhawk from that era is easier here than when they went to the Loc-On system. Seems odd that tools approaching 100 years old are still some what common.

3bay: love the Fairmont roll of wrenches. the look a lot like Williams so what's the connection cause i can't recall? also your other picks look like stuff i'd buy that is for certain. WELL DONE!!

ALL: while i'm GETTING ORGANIZED or maybe it's just moving stuff around i'm finding some cool stuff I forgot I had, but also need more bigger places to put things. that said i found and picked up 21 of these big old Lyon bins that have supports so I don't have to set them on top of each other like my smaller ones. I think they'll be 3 high underneath one of my big racks and they'll hold some of my stuff nicely. temporarily I stacked them 6 high to see how well they stack and not too bad, but with a few hundred pounds of stuff in them 6 high might be a bit too much weight especially in a spot where it might get bumped.

Each Lyon bin is about 15 wide, 24 deep and 12 tall.

hope you all have a great weekend!!

I stopped by an older house moving sale last week, not alot there, but I scrounged around and found some older spring calipers and other small tools:

- Craftsman calipers
- ?? CK co ?? The logo is a larger "C" and inside it is "K Co" I think
- unmarked older calipers
- Union Caliper Co calipers
- SW Card Mfg Co die holder
- old coping/fret saw, no logo found yet

All for $5. I'll put/display the calipers in my restored machinist box.

Went around the corner this morning to a garage sale. Last year I picked up a really nice floor jack from this one for $20 so I had to check it out. All of this was a total of $17.50. I certainly don't need any more wrenches, but I had to pick these up. I've never seen a quick acting pipe wrench before and the adjustable was just calling my name. The oil can is pretty common, but this one is older than most as it was made by F. Jaden Co. rather than Dutton Lainson.

I found a few likely looking estate sales so we went with some friends to check them out. I finally got the order right because the first sale closest to home was the clear winner. It netted a pretty large haul including a bunch of Proto LA along with some other Proto and Plomb. Plenty of other brands too. Here are some pictures. The first two are Proto LA and the third one is Plomb. Next is the picture of all the tools from the early sales followed by the small group from the final sale. The next shot is everything and the last one is the Proto roll cleaned up.

That's a pretty big haul, Don. Is the tube patch kit in the can? or just the can?

I barely looked at it. There is a lid from another kit to rough up the tube and some patch material. I just thought the graphics were kind of cool so I grabbed it. I imagine if there had been a tube of glue it would have dried up long ago.
Here are some of the tools for my collections.

I picked up a second Starrett 443 socket set from ebay for less than I could buy parts to complete mine. So I will be putting together my keeper set this weekend. Question- one set of the sockets is ALL Mossberg including the spark plug socket. Did someone do a great job of putting together replacement Mossberg sockets, or did some of the Starrett kits possibly ship with Mossberg sockets?

Ok and some stuff from the last month or so
Picked up a handful of tiny cincinatti tool co clamps for 75 cents. A buck each for a Stevens Walden box and an unmarked 1/4 set.

Spent 25 cents on a Milton Bradley desktop croquet set.

And a few more...
paid 3 bucks for an old key machine that cleaned up good enough to make a lamp out of. I would need to do some rewiring on the motor to feel safe running it

Mystery tool to me - someone educate me - I took a chance at 50 cents.

50 cents each for some tins. one of them is filled with what seem like scratch awl points(?) - again someone educate me please- i thought they were nails till I got them home.

Cool looking Sun diagnostic machine for 5 bucks. It will make a good shelf sitter.

finally, I stepped up and paid the full 3 bucks for a J. W. Speaker wall mounted double vulcanizer - I think it will look cool cleaned up. It's missing a "foot/claw"(?) but I seem to run across vulcanizers often enough (and cheap enough) that I can find a replacement.

note- If I get through some projects this weekend I will try to get some pictures taken and start the 'show your collection' thread over in vintage tools inspired by Lugz and his amazing basement man cave!

(unfortunately - I have a few sales calling my name for tomorrow... and it might be the last mild weather for a whilte.)

ALL: these Makita 10 inch chop saws are almost indestructible so when I saw this 20+ year old one that is like new condition at a good price I had to pick it up even though i have a couple others. this one has the guard so i'll probably keep it at my daughter and son in law's home so if they use it then they might be a bit safer than using one of my other ones without a guard.

usually these are rusted from sitting outside or in the back of trucks, but they usually all still keep on working. I had the first one I owned for maybe 30 years before one of my young friends talked me out of it when I bought my big Dewalt compound miter. the Dewalt is too big to bring out to just cut some 2 by's so having another makita here and and my kids house will be handy.

hope you are all having a great weekend.
