Alrighty then, let’s kick the tires and light the fires. Here’s my third best Craigslist day ever. 416 lbs of vises all found the same day at the same location. Columbian no. 508, Prentiss no. 22 and a 5” Wilton with aluminum ear muffs.

Smitty, Nice haul!!! That prentiss looks barely used. Is the swivel jaw free??

Thanks, I was pretty excited driving home that day. A little tapping loosened the the pin up and the jaw moved freely. The vise was well preserved over the years and had never been outside.

Prentiss Pin for Swivel Jaw -

Been wondering for a while - is/was/should-be a retainer spring for the swivel jaw pins? I see a ring that may fit in the groove of Smitty's No. 22? - Is that to grab it easier?

My No. 26 Coachmaker Prentiss Vise with replacement pin below along with Smitty Vise No 22 Prentiss

They didn’t come with retaining clips that was a cap that was placed on the vise by the previous owner. I bent the last inch on the piece of rebar so I could tap stuck pins a6813ba063843b6df05ebb174a30d8aa.jpg

out through the bottom bolt hole when the base is removed.

Nice! You're lucky, I had to sacrafice a quart of sweat and some blood to free up my Hollands. Just getting the pin out was an ordeal.

Here’s a better photo of the Columbian 508 with 8” jaws. If Dr. Frankenstein’s dungeon had a vise this would be it. They welded an extension on one of the jaws and it’s been well used.d6b0557da3e35713577cfd4b315a68bb.jpg44da35d4413fd2eea50b3829f5771c39.jpg

I take the swivel base off of the bottom so I can tap the pin from the underside with a piece of bent rebar. I don’t know if that’s possible on a holland.

Does your #22 have the split swivel base, or does it have the center bolt?

I have a Prentiss 456 (newer version of your 22 with the split swivel base) and the only hole in the bottom is for the pin that holds the nut in, and it isn't in line with (and is considerably smaller than) the swivel pin hole. I've had it upside down soaking in pb for WEEKS and isn't budging. I wish a piece of bent rebar would work!!!

It has the center bolt and you have to remove the main nut.

You could drill an access hole and plug it afterwards, the main nut and the base would cover it. I know it sound extreme but it might work as a last resort.

You could always thread the hole and put a set screw in it and call it an access port.

Damn that is large. Significantly larger than the 605 I just picked up the other day. When you posted the original photos with the other vises it didn't look that large. Nice pick up!

I don't think in almost a half century of trying I've EVER had penetrating fluid loosen off a corroded in bolt or pin. Doesn't stop me from continuing to try, but they say that's the definition of insanity.......

Tried ATF and acetone, PB-blaster, kroil, WD40, and a host of others.

Smitty is killing the vise acquisition game right now....killing it!!

But an unopened beer, that is an automatic deduction of 10 man-vise points. :yikes:

I'd considered it, I even have machine shop access. However I agree, I will only drill it as a last resort. I have also tried a screw Jack inside the vise, which didn't work either. And of course using a copper hammer beating on it inside the vise didn't do anything. I'd be more inclined to drill and tap the top of the pin itself, and try using a slide hammer.

I'm jealous your pin came right out. This is my 3rd swivel jaw vise and they've ALL had stuck pins.

My method thus far has been to fill the swivel pin hole inside the vise with the body upside down, let it sit, check a few days later. The level of the fluid goes down over time, I think it is just going into the void between the jaw and body though. This makes me think the pin is seized in the swivel jaw itself, and I should exercise caution to not break it.

This vise is a long term project. Despite looking like it didn't see much use, the slide required filing and stoning to slide freely. The swivel jaw is stuck. The spindle was stuck due to a burr on the c-clip groove, but a BFH got that out. Oh and the jaw screws all required an impact to get them out, but one is still stuck. The pad with both screws out flatly refuses to budge. Rant over lol

The advantage of coming at it from below is that you can gently tap it one hundred times. The harder the rod you use the smaller the hole. I would put a strap clamp around the body and top jaw. It’s too nice of a vise to break.

Smitty, it looks like the previous owner of that Columbian vise also did a little welding around the hole in the end of the lead screw where the handle slides through it. Did they, or am I just seeing things?

Re: Maui

Actually they did a lot of welding. You’d think that a valve company would have some rubber washers laying around.

My Prentiss 22 swivel pin story. Aquired a P22 in good shape, came out of a WI paper mill. Pin was very siezed. I've had P20s and all I did for them was heat around the pin and it came out, but they're a much smaller pin. Heat=oxyfuel rosebud. Heated this P22 up several times and it would not budge. Bent jack bolts, heated with a jack bolt, nothing. Submerged the static upside down overnight in a vat of one gallon ATF and one gallon acetone. Couple hammer blows on the side of the pin with the jack bolt and it popped right out. If that didn't work was going to electrolysis the vise, which I did after the fact. If that didn't work drilling would be the last resort. I don't think just spraying it is going to do the job, submerge it and see what happens. I've also never had good luck with any pen oil for stuck things, this was actually the first time it worked.

Estate Sale around the corner from the house yielded these two used, not abused one-owner home duty vises:

Columbian Red Arrow 63-1/2. Interesting to note no jaw inserts and smooooth jaw faces. Guessing it was used for small metalwork.

Littlestown 143-1/2

What’s it worth? This seller is always a top dollar kind of guy.
Yeah I see his listings on CL all the time. He usually seems to have 10-20 vises listed and they are priced at the high end of the spectrum.

Yeah, I can’t afford his prices. Like most people here I’m trying to find deals on Craigslist. If I wanted to pay top dollar I’d go to eBay.

Yea LA is a tough area. Too many people trying to grab stuff up, do a ****** rattle can job, and sell it off for a profit. I hate seeing those vises with every inch of them painted.

That same dude wants 550 for an Athol vise in 'ok' shape lol. That rotating Chas Parker is kinda cool, shame someone welded the jaws, and for $450 bucks it must be made of gold, not steel.

Usually the rattle can guys leave the board full of overspray in the photo. They’re pretty easy to spot.

Yes you're right. I had one fun experience buying a vise, the seller only spoke spanish. Wouldn't respond to me in english, but I could see they were reading my messages on facebook marketplace. So I took a gamble and used google translate and started talking to them in spanish. Got an immediate response, did a back and forth of translating my stuff into spanish, and their replies into english and was able to pick it up and utilize my 2 years of high school spanish from 15 years ago to make the transaction in person.

I think those Athol/Starrett 626 vises weighed around 200 lbs. That's probably one of the heaviest 6" (non combo) vises ever made. Not saying worth it or not, I wouldn't pay that much but I wouldnt mind owning one should the opportunity present itself.
