Finishing this double swivel up, still needs a little spindle work, but moving on to something else for a while.

Well done, looks great. The vise seems to be in exceptional shape too. Those jaw inserts are in mint condition and vise seems to be have been rarely used.

Thanks, it was lightly used I think. Jaws were clogged with copper, so had to remove all that material, so thinking mostly used with soft jaws.

Also interesting as it is relatively new...since its a Union Parker, that places it mid 50s to mid 70s. I had no idea they kept making that style until then. Also nice resto!

I have reason to believe by some indicia on the vise it may have been made in '68. Not sure of that.

The static and dynamic body look in amazing shape, but both of those jaws look pretty worrisome?

Some of of the best vises were made by Athol/Starrett and Reed. (This is coming from a guy that likes Parkers...) Others that have restored both brands will probably ring in as back this up. This is based on overall quality, and more importantly, fit of the slide & jaws.

Something you will need to consider is size, and jaw type (Smooth, lightly serrated, heavy serrations)

Is a swivel base a necessity?

How about a swivel static jaw?

Thank you very much for the advice. I would prefer a swivel base but it's certainly not necessary. Size is a 4" at least. Thanks again

Picked this bad boy up Saturday. Had to carry this thing 1/4 mile to my car. I initially thought it wasn’t a big deal lol. The jaws are smooth, handle has a slight bend, but opens smoothly.

They’re not as bad as they seem from the end view. The static jaw is tight. The dynamic seems like it was fiddled with over the years.0b75bf280eff5aac65f724dbc5dae37d.jpg

This is from an 1895 catalog. Ohio is 2,000 miles away. Sigh!bd1ca5b1ffc6f6c335ff7ba03c2349d4.jpg

I'm talking to the guy about this vise actually, and it apparently it's had a repair in the past that isn't readily apparent from the pics. He's going to send me some additional photos.

Zoomie, I'm surprised you haven't been trying to get member Crotalusatrox to sell you the 6" Wilton SJ he recently acquired and fixed up.

Here's a pic in case you missed it.b0d883189d8e2ad4dd655af85c966ae6.jpg

3.5" on left and 8" on right. Have the opportunity to buy a 6" like these two for $40, but it's in the same cosmetic condition as the 8" pictured here is. Plan to eventually clean and repaint at least the 8".

Why do we only see one vise in the picture? Looks like you stumbled into the wrong thread...:bounce:

That's an awesome thread! Thanks a ton. I've bookmarked it and this one. :)

Haha, John thinks he's going to only have one vise with that $300 budget. John, 6 mos from now you'll be cursing the day you found this thread. The first vise is the "free taste". All the vises after are only a shorter and shorter term fix.

What a shame. This just came up near me. It’s listed as used (normal wear).

I’ve seen trumpets with less brass.
[/url]

Holy ****. Normal wear? Maybe in the middle of a war zone.

Yes, unfortunately it was a pretty extensive break. The seller has been very honest about the break from the very get-go though. Seems to be a super honest guy. I hope he's able to find a new home for it.

It was an interesting morning. I picked up this Wilton Cadet 8135 with 3 1/2” jaws for $50. The guy also had an old Reed 104 that’s in great condition for $40.4429891df073c94876b4f680f4b8e21d.jpge9ef231f74ffbd6d6f6294462577b170.jpg

As someone already stated you are killing it.

In other news, NASA has detected that ground in So Cal is sinking at an alarming rate of several inches a day. The cause of sinking seems to be mysterious rapid accumulation of heavy cast iron objects at a certain location. So far authorities have not been able to determine who is responsible for the rapid accumulation but are seeking help from GJ experts.

**Arizona Bay.....for all you Tool fans....

Going to look at a big vise tonight - seller is being weird though and wants me to come and look at it because he "doesn't have time to take pictures or answer questions in email, but it's at least 100 pounds". Says jaw width is 6 3/4".

Very curious to see what it is....wants $75, so it might be a steal if it is in fact that big.

100+ is too light for a nearly 7” American vise and too heavy for Chinese junk. Why can’t the seller at least tell you the brand and model number or at least just brand name?

Be careful, the whole thing sounds a bit fishy.
