Hey guys,

I picked up this cross slide table that was attached to a ~1968 Craftsman drill press. Table is 7x7".

Does this look like an original Craftsman unit? Can't find many markings, just a few assorted numbers.

Thanks!

JZ: looks about that age and it's condition is awesome so you must have got a great drill press too. here's the jaws you are missing that i think a member on practical machinist or OWWM made for a few of the guys. Outlaw and Jeremy bought a few for i think $50 and Jeremy had to do a little work to his since he had access to a machine shop because they were a little rough from the casting.

here's a picture of one i sold Jeremy and another one i've got a member holding for me until i pick it up. and a few more to help you.

nice find.

Hey Drives, thanks for jumping in! My table looks like the last 3 pictures you posted.

It is missing the vise part but that's OK... just going to bolt a drill press vise to it and utilize the XY action of the table.

Yes it does
I think they were made by Dunlap atlas, or something like that. They were rebadged from one of the same suppiers that made a bunch of machiner from them

Pretty sure that's an Atlas, or Atlas sourced Craftsman. The Mastercrafts are very similar, but the base is different.

Thanks for confirming. I've been enjoying this table a lot

The screw lash is about 5 thousands for both directions. Seems reasonable. I was able to tighten the slides with the little set screw and nut adjusters.

Next I'm going to try some way oil and see how smooth the slides operate with it.

JZ: since your cross table vises seem to be showing up in bunches maybe you can find the jaws too. another option is a smallish drill press vise that you might be able to mount on your tables if the jaws are found or made. or maybe a way to mount one of the little DP vises without the jaws.

here's a little craftsman vise i'm going to use with mine. there are a lot of little vise choices that you can find to use. now that you know what you are looking for i'd be curious to see what else you find.

good luck

Hey Drives,

Thanks for the input! I current use one of those 2-1/2" Craftsman vises (I guess made by Palmgren?) just as you described. The tilt functionality is very handy.

The second table I got came with the original 1961 paperwork. Uploaded to VintageMachinery, here's the link.

Here's the exploded parts diagram.

JZ: that is a great set up. do you happen to have a picture of the bolts you used to hold the Craftsman angle vise down on your table?

very cool you found and just posted that diagram. I'm saving it to my computer just in case i need it later.

thank you

Good things come in threes. And number three had the factory jaws

PM me if you happen to be interested in one of these tables. I'm going to try to offload at least one of them. I won't be selling the jaws though, sorry. In the meantime I'll have fun cleaning, oiling, and setting the gib and screw lash to get them back to factory functioning.

Ran across another. This one has been cleaned / greased and will be posted in the GJ classifieds so it can find a good home.

JZ: hard to find these old XY vise gems any more so happy to see you found a few to fill your needs. if i didn't already own 2 (one for each bench top DP i own) i'd probably send you a PM to buy yours for a benji and a half because that's a great price even with one idiot mark on the top. otherwise that vise looks pristine.

have you drilled many holes using yours yet or just setting up shop and getting ready to?

I use my Atlas table all the time, especially when making slow speed pulleys ;)

Hey Ziggy, I get to use my table...finally! I just picked up an old Craftsman vise from a guy in your area. Thanks again for the cross slide table and the switch on my DP!

Brad

How are the tolerances on these cross slides. I've been thinking about getting one myself for some time. I've seen some made in Japan but I think the old ones are USA made.

Accuracy on tables run the gamut from +\- .010" to +\- .000x. The price is inverse of the tolerance. That is a wide range and accuracy is a better term than tolerance. How do you define tolerance and how would you test for it? What do you need for your job at hand?

There should be some graduations for movement.
