Good data point, thanks. Just cleaned a bunch of grime off the thing. Boy it spent thirty years having grimy greasy hands wiped all over it. Slide says 10/88 I guess that's it's birth date?
Given that it has pipe jaws maybe I should make this my daily driver? Currently it's a Morgan 145.

Why limit yourself to just one daily driver?

Your latest deal provides some solid evidence that there are great vises to be had for reasonable prices. If a guy had been close enough to that seller to do local pick up, it would have been an almost “you ****” deal. Even with shipping it ain’t too bad. :) ( you guys do know that you can sort eBay offerings by “nearest first”, right ?)
A fantastic condition Parker coach builder vise for $61 including the rare and valuable wrench which is usually missing especially in that price range.

You are right Shift.---And there are several members up in that area that could have made the trip for cheap.---But Naples, New York was way out of my hunting ground.---And I ain't much for traveling, period.

:+1:---Both of those are perfect size shop beaters.---Wouldn't hurt to have two work stations as long as you have the room.

The room....that's the problem. I need to show you how much s**t I have stuffed into my garage. Of course, that damned stripped to bare metal 57 Chevy doesn't help! Damn thing has to live inside.

Is this vise beyond hope to restore? The Jaws look really bad.

https://waco.craigslist.org/tls/d/vise/6755933186.html

Let me be the first to say it...YES!
My advice is to keep looking for a better starting point for your restoration project. Parker jaws are VERY difficult to fabricate. The front horseshoe collar is broken and unusable. I would be suspicious of the main nut and screw.

Hey guys... the slide on that Parker looks unbroken!!!

Personally I have two daily user vises (Reed 404 1/2 R and Parker 974), one at each end of my work bench. While they are not identical in size, they are close enough that for large jobs I can clamp the piece at each end. It is a very useful arrangement.

So you are the guy making us (and not all everyone here is “old”, what ever that means in the first place! And is there a legal age in this free country after which one is not allowed to own more than one vise) all look bad and mean (no wait, on second thoughts, never mind, it seems it is a
Was my jealously talking) :lol_hitti

Seriously Amazing collection (and I am jealous but in an admiring way) .

I am doing a none scientific survey of people who actually own Parkers. How many Parkers do you have and how many have broken slides?

For the record, I will go first, I have three and have no broken slides.

I have a large one I use 436A and a small Parker I bought to resell 973. Neither one broken.

18 Parkers, no broken slides. I have seen 1 that I can remember, pretty sure I posted a pic in this thread a year or 2 ago. Went to a garage sale this AM, they had 2 large Reed double swivelers, wouldn't sell either one. A 4" or 4-1/2" that was pretty nice, and a 6" that had been used pretty hard, lots of wear and damage to the jaws, probably would have been fine for a user/beater though. As I was talking with the seller he mentioned they had more vises, but a vise and anvil collector had already bought them. He said one was a Parker that towered over the 6" Reed, but it had a chunk missing out of the side of the slide. :(

Yup, pic of broken Parker here https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6474650&highlight=Parker#post6474650

And here it is - in epoxy primer awaiting the rain to stop so I can top coat it. Only three days left before I'll have exceeded the recoat window and have to scuff and re-shoot the epoxy. :(

I have two, a 383-1/2 and a "No F", both uncracked BUT I would like to point out that we probably wouldn't have bought them in the first place if they had a chunk missing out of the slide? I know I wouldn't. :shocking:

Where do you all find most of your vises at good prices?

I regularly Craigslist, not much on there. I see alot more on facebook marketplace but people seem to want top dollar for alot of garbage.

I use CL and eBay a lot. There are a lot of people out there that quickly research their vise, see that there is a small collectors community, and automatically assume they can command a premium for hot garbage. It takes time, but you do have to sift through the weeds, per se, and have some patience.

Not true, broken vises have a value as donners.

Also even if the Parkers were intact when we bought them , apparently under previous ownerships as well as our ownership they did not “spontaneously combust”. The fact so many intact Parkers exist vs anecdotal examples of broken one might point to something.

Here is a thought I want to leave with. How many people will call their utility company in dead of winter and say thank you, you are doing a great job and nothing is wrong? How about the reverse?

Absolutely not true. besides donor parts already mentioned, go look at the vise repair thread; go look at Dr. Scotts work; look back at this thread...

You really need to think before you post erroneous information... I guess that's another trait of growing up on tweets, twitters and texts; post a one liner and say the first impulsive thought that hits.

"Back in the day" people often said "think before you speak". Its always been a problem, but the tech make what you say permanent... :see:

Just finished the Prentiss 19 1/2. I tried to keep as much of the original patina as possible.

Yes... obviously there are exceptions... probably why I mentioned one! As a general rule people won’t buy broken ****. Even Kevin has limits of what he will try to repair. I’ve only seen him do slide repairs maybe once or twice, and nothing more advanced than that from what I’ve seen.
