How big an area does you route cover. I've seen the Matco driver (same guy) around here (just west of Chicago), up on the Wisconsin border, down by the Indiana border and way out west, seems like a huge area, just wondering how big an area you cover?

I am not a truck guy but I think it has to do with the number of customers. For example each driver gets 2500 customers. Some might have a larger area due to population than others.

2500 customers is like 8 routes. i think the drivers need like 300 to have a nice money route.

You are correct. It is based on the number of customers. Snap-on will survey an area, hitting all the shops and counting the number of mechanics who have to purchase tools to do their job. The number of customers is nowhere near 2500 though. I currently keep around 200-210 customers on the books. There are more in my route but this is the number of guys that owe me money.

What happens if you want to close out your franchise?
Does everybody have to then start paying some other way or what?

It also depends on if there are any other dealers around, I do 4 different cities, but there is no one in the rest of northern nevada so if someone calls matco and wants to buy something....they get referred to me. Basically my area is all of N. nevada except the reno area.

I get calls and ship stuff to people over 300 miles away

not far from the truth there......some areas address are "42 miles north on st route 6, 55 miles east."

UPS hates those tags......they have no record of anything being out there in the middle of the desert. :spit:

At least the UPS guy that does that area knows there are people out there.

Being from back east (ohio) and now living in Idaho. I can vouch for the fact that alot of people don't get the fact that you can be that far from a real town/settlement. That stretch of hwy 95 between Boise and Winemucca is some lonely country. Just bungee the steering wheel & take a nap for about ten minutes lol

Don't mean to change topics but since we're asking dealer questions anyway, here's mine. What happens when a shop closes down or lays off mechanics? How do you collect then? Do you just send them to collections? Thanks

I cover a military base and three city's. There are also 4 other dealers that run in and around the same areas. Killeen has 112000 people. Only enough shops for two dealers, but not enough to stay alive and eat for that matter. SO three of us seperate the city up and then me and two other dealers seperate up temple. We are all over the place, but get everything covered where there are no complaints. We stay busy and do well.
As long as the entire military does not deploy we will be ok. It dried up out here 10 years ago and the 3 dealers nearly had to hang it up. No cars on the road to let the customers work on....

The route that Tony just shut down, waaaaaaaaaay out there in the middle of n
Nowhere, Texas, would have involved lots of windshield time.

And the worst thing about it is, at one time, I actually kind of liked that part of the state.

what area was that? I know he had a guy working for him a few years ago. cant recall his name for some reason.

I couldn't tell you, Tony told me, but all I can remember was it was in one of the 'City' areas, like Denver City, Garden City, Sterling City, Colorado City, someplace where the trees are few, and the distances are long.

he had a city that was full of dealerships and his route was about 2 miles long all week and had a 95% collection rate. I would be on top of the world if I had a 95 percent rate.
I am at 50% most the time and I pull 10100 average last year and about 11000 this year.

A 2 mile long route would be sweet.
