Vise from Amazon

I need to purchase a five inch vise from Amazon for my son in CA. We’ll be used casually. Shipping is free so that is the way to go. I have a used Yost at least eighty years old that I have had for fifty. Used every day and no complaints. Any recommendations from you folks. I know they don’t make the like they use to! Thanks

If you're thinking Yost and Amazon the first things that come to my mind are the forged steel vises they offer.

I am no vise expert, and there are plenty of them around here, but my understanding is that these in particular are well-regarded, strong, and I've seen them go on sale from time to time. At the moment there is a 5% coupon on some of the sizes.

I think these would make a great gift.

Hopefully that's a good starting point.

Yep, very well regarded. I have the FSV-5, use it on a hitch mount on my truck. Deceptively strong for its relatively light weight of 27 lbs.

Almost bought a Yost when I moved last year but the guy who bought my house have me my old vice when he heard I was looking for one.

The forged ones look really good for the price and free prime shipping.

They certainly don’t. .
Correction: Wilton still makes the classic bullet machinist vises as well as the C series of vises which are excellent but VERY expensive.

For that price range, I would pick up a good quality vintage vise from from Craigslist or Offer up, or Facebook marketplace.
In most areas there are restored vises for sale if you don’t want to do the work yourself.
I’d be happy to sell you a Wilton or a Starrett, or an Athol. Or a rock island or a Parker.
What location? Lots of GJ guys have extra vises. Put an ad in the wanted section and I bet you’ll get flooded with responses.
