Question about 2 stage radiant tube heater.

I installed a 2 stage radiant tube in my shop.

It runs pretty much all the time and takes a long time to get to 60 deg.

BUT, I don't have any insulation in the ceiling yet so I'm going to let it slide until I do, then see how it performs.

My question is can you tell/hear a difference in the "two" stages?

Does it get louder or just hotter?

Just curious, mine sounds the same all the time.

Louder noise would make me nervous. I'm sure your electric meter is humming on the 2nd stage.

It may not sound much or any different, you can clock the gas meter to see how many btus it's using on low and hi. IIRC you have something like a 30/40k btu unit that's 30' long? If so you may not notice much difference in temp output since it's really not a ton of heat and its spread out over a longer distance.


Looking at the specs a 45/60 can be run with a 30' tube as well, if yours won't keep up after insulation is completed see if you can change yours to the larger input, in some cases it's a simple orifice change, I have installed heaters that came with the parts for multiple input ratings from the factory.

So far it sounds the same all the time.

Electric meter doesn't seem too bad so far either, its just a small fan running.

Yup 30-40 and 30' long. I think your right about the heat difference.

I heard back from the manufacturer and they told me how to tell if its on the second stage, there's indicator lights on the back. Also, I found in the thermostat manual how to set the differential between high and low, but haven't checked it yet.

Does not work that way. It's gas or propane.

My 2 stage sounds pretty much the same. The heat is more intense though.
The only time both stages are on is if the power has been out due to a storm and it is flat cold. I also have to leave the big door open for a little while before it kicks in both stages. Grateful when it does in those situations.
