Thanks Drives, Yeah, I saw Tom's post and verified it. I posted what was good inside above. No real gems though. The other gem was not in the box, but a art deco magnifier and stand that turned out to be Bausch & Lomb from the forties.

I've got to get me some of these old, thin-drawer filing-cabinets for tool storage. I fear rust and I figure the filing cabinets would be easier to make air-tight than a traditional tool-chest.

Thoughts?

NOTE: Also, you have to actually use the poll to vote. Comments don't count. I say that because we've actually had guys not see the polling section up top before, thinking it was a visual hand tally post-by-post poll.

Wow!! I am honored to even be in the POY Running with such awesome people! this place actually changed my life. It all started three years ago with the Garage sale thread. Reading and leaning from all of you all. This is the most amazing online community there is, period. And Lugz, you have made this year amazing and actually a lot of fun!! I look forwards to many more years of finding great stuff and sharing and learning from all you guys. Off for two weeks starting Friday at noon so hopefully get another couple of hauls before years end!

“Air-tight,” hmmm. I don’t think that would do much good, even if it were possible. Earth atmosphere being nearly 20% oxygen, there’s hardly a place without it. You’d be sealing in oxygen and moisture. I think better is keep tools as free from perspiration salts as possible by cleaning and oiling/waxing the tools, wearing gloves. Keep the air moisture as low as you can, control hot/cold cycling to prevent condensation.

Idaho: as I mentioned in your PM you might try to find some HEAVY fireproof file cabinets but air will still get in the drawers. Lesser has a great idea too.

if I ever get organized i'm hoping to put cork in the bottom of my drawers and i'll probably have a lot of tools with some form of BLO on them. of course there are other newer great (and probably very expensive) rust protection products, but i like the look and even the smell of BLO.

I definitely agree with BMW and RagTop it is an honor to be in that group but clearly "one of these guys is not like the others". If anyone recalls the Sesame Street song. ;-) Still, I thank Lugz for nominating me. This year has really been a blast with the GS thread and that's due to the great job Lugz has done as host. But it is also a great community of pickers who eagerly share their knowledge. Kudos to those other 6 pickers and everyone else who participated in the GS thread this year!

IdahoMan:

A lot depends on the types of tools and your goals. If you're thinking of 'sealing' them up, hermetically, I'm assuming you're talking about long-term storage (tools you are not reaching for every week).

For long-term storage, I use Fluid Film, which is lanolin-based. I have used military grade RP-342, which we use in our fab shop, but it's funny, because all the guys in the shop all swear by Fluid Film for personal use. It's expensive, but well worth it, and both come in rattle cans.

Even though guys will try to argue the opposite, there is a BIG inarguable difference between products like BLO and WD-40 and products like RP-342 and Fluid Film. If you don't think so, check out this astonishing test some guy on GJ did a few years ago, linked here.

All: while I don’t agree on the YS and bragging on a good deal when not mentioning the hours researching and gas and time to pick it up I do agree that this garage sale thread is one of the best threads year to year in GJ and it has some of the best minds on GJ or maybe in the world on just about anything. So I want to give a shout out to all of you!!

Lug: all the candidates are worthy and most everyone on this thread is but the thought and time you put into the nominations was AMAZING!! Very well done sir!!

I live in Western Oregon, and in my location we get over 50" of rain a year. Just 10 miles away as the crow flies a radar station on the top of a 3,000 foot mountain recieved 16 FEET of rain in one year, and a logging company town about 15 miles away averaged 12 feet of rain per year over 50 years!

We have a lot of moisture here, and I have found that a well-weatherstripped, unheated shop with a concrete floor will result in rust if bare steel is not coated with paint, wax, or a preservative coating of oil/grease/cosmoline/engineered "coating". The greatest effect is when we have freezing temperatures for several days that cold-soaks the metal, followed by a warm front off the Pacific Ocean that warms things up to 40- or even 60-degrees with a very high humidity. Everything "sweats" by condensing beads of moisture from the damp air.

The solution for this is keeping interior temperatures at least 40-degrees, and 45 is better. Not much advantage in keeping it more than 50-degrees inside.

In places of high humidity combined with higher temperatures, this does not apply. However, it you live where there are "sweating" cycles, it offers a way to counter them.

My idea was to get an air-tight storage means with a homemade desiccant canister. If I wanted to be really fancy, I could have a "wind-up" fan installed that runs when the door is closed.

And yes, I will have a bottle of Hoppe's #9 oil and a rag with each storage box. And I oil all my tools, even sockets. lol.

Thanks for the responses, all. (and I am looking at that test thread too)

If you are really worried about rust, get some oil wipes. Most gun care companies have some, I use the Hoppes brand. Also, desiccant can be used to absorb moisture.

put VCI chips in each drawer

Here is an old school rust inhibitor that machinists used to do: put a block of Camphor in each drawer or small container of camphor with a few holes in it. As I recall, the camphor out-gasses, and coats the tools, and no rust.

It's cheap too: https://www.amazon.com/Camphor-Tablets-Premium-Alcamphor-Sanvall/dp/B006T6O3UC/ref=asc_df_B006T6O3UC/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309778422879&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10174241880550983504&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9032024&hvtargid=pla-568615870751&psc=1

I wish all the nominees would be expressing a lot less modesty, because they're all making my judgement - which I stand by 1,000% - look bad! Just sayin'!

well.. if you insist... JK!:) Given all the great folks here it is an honor to be nominated! What great company!

I originally came to GJ for the HD/Lowes deal threads at a time I was flipping clearance tools as a flea market vendor. But the real treat here has been this thread and all the characters here. We are all slightly jealous here, but at the same time everybody jumps in and helps with missing info, items, tips, etc. Lugtz has made this years version of an always great thread even more enjoyable.

So.. today.. my daughter was less than 24 hours off her flight from Japan and needed some kid free time. BOOM! Estate Sale. Second day of a sale 50% off - spent $30 - got a box of 40s to 60s books - machinists, electrical, engineering. A bunch of random items which I have not really gone through.

but what I like most is a new wrench that I just learned about .. I picked up an A.B.C. (Addison B Carll) wrench pat 1913 - but the REALLY cool thing is the other version in the patent shown as figure 3 - what I need to know is did they ever make this thing? has anyone seen one? It shows two rotating barrels to adjust the width and the angle of the wrench.
http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=1060891&id=22423

I am officially on a quest to find out if this thing really exists! I want one!

The final great haul of the year. You can't go to St. Louis and not buy Plomb Empire stuff. I give you TOOL BOARDS. That's right, 16 Plomb/Proto tool boards.

I found this box today on Letgo for $20. It looks like a Kennedy but no markings. 18"×10"×12.5" and pretty heavy.

I was able to get my swap meet finds from this summer cleaned up and sorted by brand. Some of these where pretty rough but I was able to clean them up for the most part. I got a lot of extra plvmb, proto and p&c sockets but for stupid low prices, I had s hard time saying no [emoji51] these are from both swap meets in brooks Oregon at antique powerland. Finds ranged from snap on, husky, thorsen, Utica, proto, proto professional, p&c, plvmb and other brands!

Good lord! Now that’s a way to round out the year!
Those green boards have got to be Plomb with Proto stickers over the Plomb branding.

Too cool! Based on the year you had, I’ll bet you’ve got those boards mostly filled by Christmas! xmas

TM: are all those Proto boards 3/4 inch plywood framed too? I bet that was not easy getting them all in your vehicle without scratching or damaging them either?

VERY WELL DONE and WOW!!

BB: WAY TO FUNNY!!

ALL: I picked this little ratchet up a while back and it fell to the bottom of the bucket so as i'm getting organized it appeared. i think it's brass and not sure about much else about it. I like it and wondering if it i need to shine it up or just keep it with original dirty patina?

cheers and looks like it's been Christmas for a few of you this weekend.
