I have natural gas and i think that's the most most efficient heat source. Need to stay on small budget. Want garage heater. Was thinking a wall mount blue flame or radiant ventless for occasional use. @$150-200 from menards/depot. Very easy to install. Downside is moisture issues and possible c02.
Option 2 is a mr. Heater big maxx ceiling forced air unit. Needs a chimney which is an extra expense but probably worth it. Problem is the amazon reviews are terrible. People complain of loud out of balance fans and lots of circuit board failures. Reliability is questionable. The one I'm looking at is @$399 at menards. That's about the top of the budget
Anything else i should consider that won't break the bank?

Find a used vented heater on Craigslist for half that price

Vent kit is under $100......mine was $65

How close is your gas line to the garage?

Or, just buy a kerosene heater if cost is that much of a factor

What size is the garage? Attached or detached? Insulated? Ceiling or open rafters? General location (Alaska will need more heat than Florida)? Heating the building around the clock or while in use?

Heating in use mostly. Southern Michigan. Garage is next to the house with a small breezeway connecting them. 24x34x8 walls are currently getting r25 insulation. Ceiling has steel barn siding and will get blown in insulation. Will also have a wood stove for supplement. Not really trying to figure out what size heater as much as type

Natural gas line should be simple enough. Just run a line from house to garage through breezeway. The ventless wall heater I'm looking at is 30k btu which I'm pretty sure is adequate. The small big maxx is 50k btu which probably more than adequate. I'm currently using a propane "torpedo" style with a grill tank. I'm looking for more permanent

My uncle gave me the old furnace from his house. It's a heil natural gas. Is this a better option?

I'm running a blue flame 30k btu non vented gas heater(for now) in a 32x34x9, R13 walls R30 ceiling , 224sq' of overhead doors. Use only when working in the shop.No problem reaching 70 dead of winter.
I make a lot of dust, but unit easy to clean out with air hose. I'll turn it off if I'm working with any flammable thinners etc.
Units priced at $150.00. Easy setup, runs trouble free/simple.
I have not had any moisture problems. Do have small vent in wall which may help with this.
If needed in a Winter outage, I can disconnect the unit and bring into house and tap into an existing gas stub and have emergency heat in about 15 minutes.

I installed a used natural gas vented heater at my last house.

Almost killed my kid. I came home and he was working in the garage with the heat on. I could tell something was wrong by the way he was acting. Opened the door and shut off the gas. Apparently the heat exchanger was cracked or rusted through The kid, 16 at the time, didn’t recognize the symptoms of CO poisoning.

New vented heaters are cheap. Why take a chance.

I would opt for a ventless before I ever installed a used Craigslist special, vented or not.

Yeah that's scary. I never noticed any symptoms but i was doing a check up on my house furnace a couple years ago and the flame looked crazy so i shut it down and checked it and the Firebox was totally rotted out. Changed it and good to go. A simple routine inspection of all furnaces are necessary to prevent problems. I'm glad you guys are ok

Please, please, please install a CO detector and smoke detector in the garage if you have any kind of heat source in there. I plan on installing one of those fancy smart smoke/co detectors that alerts my phone to issues. Will also wire it to a loud, LOUD siren to alert wife and neighbors when I am not home. May have to wire it to a switch to keep it from going off when welding. That's a different problem to sort though.

It was a requirement that we install a Heat Alarm in the garage in lieu of a smoke detector. CO also

I've had a big maxx heater, 50k BTU, for just over a year. I love it. Only issue with it has been some of the foil backed insulation flaking off inside.

It heats my 24 x 30 x 9 (well insulated) garage pretty quickly. It's a little noisy but for the money think it's a good buy.

I have it hooked up to a wireless thermostat so that I can turn it on from work and have it ready to go when I get home.

As others have noted whatever route you go get a CO monitor. I'm working on more smart devices for my house and next on the list is some smart fire detectors.
