So I bid on and won an older porter cable reciprocating saw, model 747. I liked that it had the 11.5 amp motor, rotating handle and adjustable shoe. It was an old beat up saw and I was able to get it for $29.99 plus shipping.

So yesterday the saw arrives and I open the box to see a totally different saw- it’s a porter cable 737 with a steel case... Nice, but not what I ordered. I thought the seller might have been pulling a bait and switch, and I instantly called the seller and left a message as well as emailed him through eBay.

Today he wrote back, apologized for the mixup and told me he would send me the correct saw and I could keep the other one for my troubles. Talk about making it right! Wish all sellers did business like that!

Yeah, despite all the complaints about Ebay on here, I usually find the sellers nice and responsive.
I’ve gotten screwed occasionally, but I’ve found the Ebay resolution system far less of a hassle than trying to fix something with Amazon marketplace sellers, and Amazon’s system.

I recently got a brand new chrome Proto 24" long 1/2 dr wobble extension for free due to a similar flub by an eBay seller. Ordered standard extension, received wobble. Sent them a nice email saying I'd keep it, but to maybe check to make sure what was shipped vs what was ordered to prevent errors in the future. Full refund, keep the one we sent you, have a good one. I was surprised in a good way.

A lot of sellers do business like that when the items are cheap enough. Always the threat of negative feedback and by the time the seller gets done paying shipping back its not worth it to sell it again.

I have only ever had one negative experience as a buyer in the last 15 years and 500+ transactions.

Different story as a seller. Only sold a handful of items. Maybe 10 or 15. Probably 1/3 of those the buyer gave me a hard time over some BS. Still never received a negative fb though.

I have won two different items and received the wrong item and both times the sellers let me keep the wrong item and shipped the correct one. I got a double open end Craftsman and a SK 45170 basically for free.

I learned the sellers (for me) care about making things right and mistakes do happen.

That does happen from time to time. Although lately my experience has been that they under-promise and over-deliver on ETAs.

I ordered 4 items on Saturday with ETAs ranging from 12/21 to 12/24. One item arrived yesterday, another today, and the tracking for the other two indicate tomorrow. All ahead of the promised date on the listing.

I ordered some REALLY cheap fidget spinners for my kids(5 pcs). 2 were what we ordered, and the other 3 were a different style. Shipped straight from china so I didn't expect a response to my complaint to a seller of trinkets with over 100K of sold listings, but I got an extremely fast response and an offer of a 50% refund

Anything I need within 2days I order on Amazon. If I need it TODAY I buy local. If I have no imminent need then I'll buy on ebay.

Of course lowest price trumps all,but usually highest to lowest is local, amazon, ebay.

Sadly amazon didn’t have it. Local place didn’t have it either.

I've had better luck with ebay than amazon, and done way more purchases on ebay.
usually the mix ups are my fault, except for one that I can think of, it was blatant misrepresentation and was told by seller I should just consider it a donation to their Church. yeah, right... $100 sure

I’m happy for all the positive sales on eBay. All the power to you and good sellers can make it an enjoyable experience.
I don’t sell many items on eBay but I am a hell of a buyer. I went through my inventory and decided to rid myself of a few items. All are brand new and still in the manufacturers packaging, a lot of it is still in the cardboard box and still has original taped closures. But it is taking up space. I had one electrical contractor out of Indianapolis make an early bid. Last night he emails me that he has spoken to an expert:headscrat and my product is overkill for his needs. He wants me to cancel his bid. I ask him if he knew the spec of his bid contract to begin with. He says the request was for a different manufacturer. I ask him if he wants something else I have on eBay that would work or he might need. He says no he is good. He then mentions that he will be allowing the customer finish up his work with their own materials. I told him the offering was in the late stages and put it into his stock. He whines a bit and says he won’t honour his bid. I mention that he could be outbid and he waited much to late to ask me to cancel the agreement. He says won’t pay.
I’m willing to give him a big red X for his feedback. I was going to let him buy something else, his story kept changing he sounded like a little boy making his excuses for not doing his homework.
I have purchased items and after being on site the spec changes I will then learn a lesson and put the item into stock and finish the job.
Am I wrong here or should this guy put on his big boy pants and stuck it up.

In my experience ebay sellers tend to be great. If they have a 99.x% rating, they do what they can to fix issues. That rating means more than losing the few bucks they would gain by making you repackage and send back, possibly leaving a sour taste in your mouth and a less than perfect feedback.

I actually have poorer service from Amazon sellers.... But that said, its still very good. Better honestly than most brick and mortar managers..

I've been OK so far with both ebay and Amazon. But I only buy from Amazon, sold by Amazon items. I think Amazon is making a mistake opening up their system as a market. On the one hand I get it, but on the other I have seen eBay not be what it once was.

I typically sell $10K a year on eBay as a side hustle. When a buyer wants out for any reason I let them out, no questions asked. It just isn't worth the grief to have them honor their commitments and you are guaranteed to have a disgruntled buyer. His story could be changing because he might not have wanted to admit he spent too much on Christmas and can't afford it right now.....that product might still be available for him next month and he would still be likely to buy it from me and if not......its a big world somebody else will come around eventually.

^^^^ this

Buyer and seller on ebay, buyer on Amazon. Had a few sketchy sales on ebay, always do what the buyer asks to make it right, not worth the hassle.

I sell my extras on eBay from time to time, after having a few issues with buyers I learned to be extremely careful about how you message them. If someone wants something out of process, click report buyer before proceeding and don't agree to anything via message or eBay will review them if the situation is reviewed.

Despite all the incessant whining about Ebay, I've found that >99% of buyers and sellers are great people who do the right thing. It's the <1% that can drive you nuts.

I've had really good luck with eBay too, buying & selling. Been away from them for a year, but I'm heading back. Too much stuff piling up!

Like people are saying unless you're willing to accept negative feedback from him in your record I'd cancel his bid and relist your item. It isn't worth the hassle. Good luck!

I've bought and sold a few things on eBay every year for almost 20 years and I am yet to have a bad experience.

On the other hand, Amazon sent me a nastygram yesterday asking why I've returned so many things over the past 12 months. In reality I don't return a lot of things but I also don't buy a lot of things and part of the reason I buy things from Amazon is because of their easy return policy.

I have bought and sold many items on ebay and have yet to have a bad experience that wasn't the fault of USPS. Hell, I even sold and shipped an item to Russia. Believe it or not that even worked out.

Agreed. I recently bought a WiFi router and it was DOA. I shipped it back on the sellers dime and received a refund almost immediately.
