However the antique / salvage company also had a bunch of FREE stuff because the lease was up in 7 days on June 30th. So I had brought my small trailer again an loaded up!

First thing I grabbed was a 10 foot long stainless steel table. The legs and frame were a bit bent and not in great shape and I will probably cut it off at 6 feet and sell it as is.

Then I grabbed a bunch of old wood that had come from a de-constructed house, still had wallpaper on a few places. I will de-nail the wood and sell it as well.

I picked up an old L shaped desk for the legs.

Finally I picked up the wood base cabinet, would make someone a good workbench.

All free!

I know some people like to know what happens to the stuff we acquire at these sales. The stainless steel table mentioned above indeed got cut in half and I sold the good part for $60. I kept the other 5 feet of the top for a future bench.
The free wood I de-nailed and sold it to a local carpenter for $100 who used it for a wall at a local cigar shop. I stopped in there and snapped a picture, looks nice!

That would not have been my description, but if you like it then I'm glad it's found a loving home.
So you don't agree with my aesthetics, huh? You're banned!

This is my third antique pre-1920 No. 4 engraved in that freehand draftsman's style.

Made me LOL and re-tell it to my adult kids just now. :spit:
I did the same, and my oldest son doubted the veracity of the story. He said the only thing it's missing is a monkey riding on the back and holding an umbrella! HAHA!

Fo those of you who commented on that $5 Craftsman Power Hacksaw I picked up last Friday it has been coming apart just fine with a screwdriver and a few taps of the hammer. Haven't even used any rust penetrate yet. Two problems, the vise is missing a part and the grooves that help hold the vise in place are partly gone from both wear and rust. May have to figure out something else out for the sliding part of the vise. This saw was NOT Power Bronze as someone thought, it is that Craftsman blue - gray under the rust and dirt. Everything rotates and moves as it should so this one will hopefully be running again!

The numbers and letters look like they were done by hand with one of those buzzing engravers. Are the letterforms consistent enough to be made mechanically?

I'm starting to think guys in the south and west have an advantage when it comes to garage sales. This time of year, garage sales come to a halt in Ohio. If I want to win next years pickers awards, I'm going to have to work extra hard and be extra lucky. You all ****!

Global climate change kicked my *** this summer, as I watched community yard, gararge, flea events, and even rain dates cancelled due to rain. Even now, as I type, a deluge innundates OH, PA and NJ, having left its mark on the SE earlier...
Finally, I’m looking foreward to a winter swap event, and I’m informed it coincides with seniors’ parents day for my daughter’s swim team. Well, at least it’s the last time that can happen.
Heads up, 2019: I’m coming for you!

Looks like I missed posting some finds just after Thanksgiving. This is from around November 30th. First day of an estate sale. My favorite find is the mint Craftsman Crown logo caliper. Spent around $80 total that day I think.

I picked up this metal decimal equivalent and tap drill size chart today along with a MAC hook and pick set for $20. I almost didn't buy it but after looking at ebay and seeing what they go for it looks like I did pretty well. the chart is approximately 17"x23"

Saturday estate sale in the boonies, 35 miles away. Pictures looked interesting. I spent 32 on tools and $20 for the ladder rack.

Pic 1: The Craftsman. The toolbox is pretty roached but the metal Craftsman Chevron logo was needed for another box making it well worth the $6. The tap and die set will

donate 2 pieces to my own slightly older kit.

Pic 2: From the top, Diamond hatchet ( turned out to be Chinese when I got back in cell phone range and could do a search) Starrett plomb bb, Petersen C-clamp vise grips, Snap On tools including a 10 piece SAE impact socket set from 7/16 to 1", sockets and crowsfoot, Plomb WF breaker bar and a big DBE and a Lisle T60 Torx bit.

Pic 3: I was trying to help a guy load put this System One Contractors ladder rack on his Dodge 1/2 ton shortbed truck but it was just too small, meant for a Ranger or other compact truck. He didn't want it so I got it for $20, they are around $800 new!

Pic 4: The guy built a cool log cabin, it was even nicer inside.

Another post about what happens with the junk I get LOL. I sold the ladder rack for $160 to a guy with a Toyota truck and he was super happy with it! I was super happy because that was a $140 profit on a $20 rack! More money for garage and estate sales LOL!

I've got the same caliper, picked up at a pawn shop. I use it all the time. Made in Germany.

BB: yep we've can't keep all this cool stuff so nice to see some of your finds have cheered up or made things better for the buyers you found.

Lawn: nice index and if you might want to make a frame for it like BearsFan did here's his thread cause he just fabricated an interesting frame last week. here's the link for you and maybe others that have a sign you might want to frame:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=316577

Wrench: since I'm posting I might as well give you some kudos and show off one of your generator restorations that maybe some of the other members haven't seen so they can see why you buy these big old power plants.

this one is a gem that is for certain and I bet it could power up a small city.

You must have missed me already identify it as freehand. Freehand engraving is characteristic of antique steel rules - a collectors' tell.

See Pic 1 and compare the middle of the E in NEW YORK and the E's in TEMPERED. Now compare the upturned foot of the R in YORK to the relaxed foot on the R in TEMPERED.

See Pic 2 and compare the lime-shaped O in SANDOW to the O's in TOOL to the squarish O in CO.

See Pics 3 & 4 and compare the 6 in the 16 in the 16th's corner to the 6 in the 64 of the 64ths corner.

The elegance, for me, is contained in the overt human connection. A guy wearing a monocle or looking through a magnifier leaning over a Keufeel & Esser bench.

A pair of Walden Worcester DBEs arrived in the last few days from the Land of Ebay. I've been on a WW kick lately, but I especially like finding the single offset wrenches.

bluebolt: you've had some cool finds over the last month, especially the Craftsman Crown caliper (say that five times fast!).1f0fa08494b82a3fd14cefb9c83fc007.jpg

Yes, you can see 2 have 6 compartments, one has 3 compartments and one is open.

No, I missed it under that enormous C-clamp that overshadowed everything. Pretty neat. I tend to focus on wrenches, particularly DBEs, but appreciate the tremendous varieties in various manufacturers' tool lines, especially from some of the early, long gone tool houses like WW.

Did you think I was done yet? NOPE! Here is Saturday's finds. I went back to the same huge estate sale I went to on Friday late in the afternoon for last minute bargains. I paid $40 for everything pictured, basically the lady said if I bought the large trunk she would just bundle everything else in wit it!

Pic 1: LARGE cedar trunk, I could recreate the scene from Stripes in this one!

Pic 2: Picks, shovels and sledgehammers.

Pic 3: The vintage GE Toaster is my favorite thing in this pic, it is nice and clean inside and was still in the original box which is in the background. I tested it out and it works fine. It will be a keeper. Milk crates are something I always grab. The handsaw is a plastic handle Craftsman. The clamp thing in the lower right corner probably was on some machinery, unfortunately it s not the missing piece for my Craftsman Power Hacksaw.

Here's all 3 hardware cabinets side by side, Dunlap, heritage logo Craftsman and Wards Master Quality.

Those look similar to the heritage logo Craftsman cabinet I posted in #6534, but mine had metal drawers.

Very nice. I have a couple of those that house my extra 1/4" drive stuff. Good price, too. People around here seem to think they're made of gold.

ALL: I know some of you especially the guys in the north that don't have a lot of activity right now might like this.

HOW MANY OF YOU GIVE OUT SOME OF YOUR FINDS AS CHRISTMAS PRESENTS?

since most of our family and friends probably doesn't have a clue about this thread maybe we can list a few of the items we picked up as gifts instead of buying something new?

cheers

There are 3 or 4 guys that get stuff regularly from me. I buy stuff that they may be looking for and ship when I have a nice box full of stuff. I also sent stuff as Christmas presents.

Tin: sounds like I need to get on your list not that I really need anything, but i'm always looking.

BB: you mentioned a vintage maybe close to new in the box vintage toaster that's a KEEPER?

any pics?

ALL: any more Picks that are becoming Christmas presents? I'll admit that I probably haven't been in a store willingly in YEARS looking for new stuff to get for Christmas presents. if i can't find them something that money can't buy i usually give money.

I kinda have a shot at picking up these and some of you might know I do like metal cabinets maybe better than tools at the moment and wondering if any of you have something like these 9 drawer nuts & bolt bins.

cheers

BOOF: && $51 cash.

always the issue I have when finding stuff like this is it ends up on a Flat surface hence my FLAT SURFACE DISEASE. hopefully you have a few drawers to put this stuff in. Oh wait a minute, you just bought some cool old drawers.

Wrench: ya I know, but I didn't have pictures or videos of your other big restored generators so thought i'd throw out some similar EYE CANDY. speaking of which do you have really good ear protection or just BAD HEARING LIKE I DO cause dang your big stuff must make some serious noise?

ALL: I know OUTLAW probably has more metal drawers than i do, and we've seen Lug's meticulous MAN CAVE so just curious how the rest of you manage to keep your Flat Surface Disease at bay or how you are able to locate all your cool stuff when you NEED IT?

Dang, Wrench. Here I am wondering if I have the time to restore a Mac triple stack, and you're over there bringing a battleship back to life. And very nicely too!

I'm single, retired and look 4ward every morning getting up and working on 1 of my 100 waiting projects. Here's the genny driveit was referring too powering a small town (not really). this 1 took 6 years off and on to finish.

1940 Cat 66kw genny built 4 the U.S. Navy.

Lugz, I've never seen those freehand steel rules. Ever since drafting class in high school I've always liked the draftsman type script I would see on blueprints/drawings. I'm going to keep an eye out for one of those.
