My dust collection is very similar to Bret’s. I used 2 1/2” plumbing and ran it along the ceiling. My garage has a low ceiling and I felt running 4” or 6” pipe would be too big in my small area. The 2 1/2” may be able to run behind your plywood walls. It would be slick, but be awful if one gets plugged.

Your garage is looking good and you seem to be moving fast. How many cabinets are you planning?

I don't think much more. Maybe one...I have moved some of the power tools in that far corner onto the bottom shelf of my outfeed table. Will hopefully have a plug for my welding machine soon so I can tinker with that.

It would help to have a more gentle bend (preferably a Sweep fitting) on the bottom of the TS. Minimizing the amount of flex hose will also help on efficiency.

Yes sir, I know. I just don't feel right cutting a hole in the bottom of this tablesaw just yet. Haha. I should've thought about this problem when I ordered the dust collection chute for it.

How’s it going y’all? Been a minute. I’m currently working on building an indoor dog kennel to replace my wire kennels for my dogs. It’s coming along nicely and I’ll post pictures when it’s all done which will be this week hopefully.

Just went down to goodwill and found this filing cabinet. Been looking around for one lately and Craigslist’s was the cheapest until I found this.

Yes sir, they do. They go in there by themselves around 8:30p every night. Then all I do I shut the door when I go to bed. They’re some good doggers but I don’t trust them to leave the door open. The oldest dog, Pepper (black lab in previous posts), gets to roam around and do as she pleases. She’s the queen.

It was really stressful. The stain process was irritating because, as it appeared to me, the different pieces of wood receive/soak the stain in differently. So trying to get the same color wasn’t difficult but was as easy as I thought it would be. And man, the poly was really frustrating. I cursed while brushing the poly on.

My grandpa, Papaw, who is a woodworker told me to rub the poly on with a rag. Now I’m not sure if he meant using wipe-on poly or not. I’ll ask him at thanksgiving dinner today. He also told me to wet-sand with #4/0000 steel wool to take out some of the blemishes and that worked tremendously.

What is your process Bret? Do you have a brand preference for conditioner, stain, poly, or finishing was? I used Varathane for everything but the wax which was Johnson.

I’d also like to mention that the lighting in the garage is so bright that it shows a lot of the “oops” and while I tried getting most of them out, I couldn’t. But I was relieved when I brought it inside to see that the lighting in my house is much more forgiving. It looks outstanding.

My wife now wants me to stain the wood pieces on the bottom of the other end table and the coffee table to match. I hope to accomplish this sometime this weekend or next week. Pictures to come of that.

Dang, haha. I’m not that far “yet” but I was thinking “can’t you settle just for this piece right now??” But I do understand why she wants them changed. Plus, I don’t really like the way these are attached. They are barely holding on because the lady my wife bought them from was into quick turnaround furniture fixes.

I use Minwax Poly. It's what is available at my big box stores. Varathane is good too. For inside furniture I use Clear Satin or Semi-Gloss. The full gloss looks kinda of plastic. I do like the full gloss on shopmade stuff. I also use foam brushes instead of a regular brush. I throw them away instead of cleaning them.

For stain I have used Minwax as well. I really like Trans Tint the best. It is a very concentrated dye you mix with Denatured Alcohol until you get the tint you want. If you are looking for very Dark stain it is the way to go.

This is very true. If it looks good in the workshop it is going to look even better inside your home.

What did Pawpa say? I have used Wipe on poly. It works good but you have to do several coats to get any kind of sheen.

I used clear satin poly on this piece. I also use the foam brushes and just throw them away. I like the advantage of not having to worry about brush strands getting lost in the poly. Sanding them out after it cures is a pain and nerve racking.

I’ll keep that in mind next time I build something. I used the Varathane dark walnut on this piece.

Papaw said he uses a fast dry wipe on poly and usually puts on 5 or 6 coats before wet sanding with #4/0000 steel wool. He says this is something that has always worked for him.

Finished the other end table and organized the garage a little. I’ll hopefully start the coffee table this week but I also have to start putting up Christmas lights.

In the garage pictures, all of the gas powered lawn tools (hedger too) were on the floor under the squat rack. They were neat but they take up a lot of room just being directly in the floor. It’s a lot better now! The shelving brackets were holding the shelves in some of the previous posts that the original owner left behind. I saved them in case a little job like this came up. Bought the v-shaped hooks from harbor freight for $2/piece. I bent them a little bit so that they would fit the edger and weedeater better.

I have been storing my clamps wherever I can and been planning on making a clamp rack for them. This would allow me to neatly organize and store them while also giving me the ability to get to them quickly. Well...I finally made a clamp rack. Made it out of some scraps I have laying around.

Next garage project is a lumber rack. Hopefully...

Finished the coffee table bottom shelf. Now the dog crate/end table, other end table, and coffee table all match. The wife is happy and that’s all that matters!

There’s nothing that will make you feel better about your workspace than right after it’s clean. I try to clean as I go if possible or make all my cuts, then vacuum all the dust.



My wife let me open my presents early since we won’t be at our house for Christmas. She got me a sign for the garage so now it’s officially “The Barking Dog Garage”. She also got me a Ryobi 6” bench grinder. I’ve had the bench grinder stand built for about 2 years now without a grinder to put on it. So now, that’s complete.

Yes sir! I bet a lot of people were wondering what it was for. Haha. It’s built from an old forklift tire so it’s heavy but super stable and shouldn’t chatter against the floor since it’s rubber.

Thanks Bret. I was thinking that too and then hold onto the other one as a spare. I know that one is a 30 grit and the other is a 60 grit. I’m not sure which one I should keep on there though. BUT I’m happy with it and look forward to using it.

I got a $100 gift card from work so I will be using it to buy wood to make a lumber rack or cart. I go back and forth between what I want and need. Right now, I’m thinking a lumber cart on wheels so it’s mobile but we will see what happens!

I whipped up some Christmas gifts for my sister-in-law and coworkers. SIL wanted some speaker stands for her bookshelf speakers to sit in on each side of her entertainment stand. Coworkers got some business card or name tag holders.

I haven’t used it too much yet but I will say that it is really smooth when it’s running.

I like Ryobi tools. I have an 8" grinder which is slow to spin up but seems to have plenty of power once it's up to speed.

Is that a stainless steel grinder stand? Impressive!!

Pine is bad for taking stain unevenly giving you blotchy results. You might try a gel stain which does not penetrate as well as liquid stains, or put a thin wash of shellac on first to partially seal the bare wood. It's also important to get everything well sanded before staining.

My two cents worth. You wood work looks good.

I went with a mobile one as well. Check out my thread "Logan's Garage" I have some pictures of it toward the end. I liked the idea of being able to move it around. I also don't keep full sheets around. I just run down and get a full sheet if I need one. It is working well for me.

Yes sir! It is stainless. I actually worked at a salt mine so we had some stainless steel lying around and of course, old forklift tires which is what the base is.

I have the same grinder. Bought mine a few years ago the side shields are Blue. I have had zero problems with mine. Only thing I notice is it takes along time for it to spend down once you turn it off.

It takes a while to get up to speed and slow down. Which doesn’t bother me since it’s smooth throughout that transition. Hopefully using the wheel doesn’t cause the machine to become unbalanced.

Went to my grandparents for Christmas dinner and gift exchange. My grandfather told me I could pick up this bandsaw he picked up at a garage sale for $20. Here are a few pictures of it in my garage. He said it needs new tires and a new blade guard (circle thing that goes into the table). Does anyone know where to get parts for these older Delta bandsaws?
