If that pump will work for draining a transmission through the dipstick tube it is well worth it.

I watched a guy at the base auto hobby shop dump a whole pan of hot trans fluid down his front- truck on the lift and trying to get the (full) pan free.

Several years ago I picked up a vacuum pump from the state auction, and paired it with a big 1½ gal suction bottle for just that purpose. When transmission filter change time comes around; no mess.

Here I'm using it to prime a fuel filter:

now, do we have to block off the PCV valve or anything in order for this system to work?

I don't know how well it would work on a car engine, you can't really stick the hose down the dipstick due to it's size and oil dipstick holders don't go to the bottom of the oil pan. Most transmission dipsticks have a larger diameter since you fill it that way as well. Unless you own a Ford truck, then the dipstick is 4" long and you have to climb under the truck to get to it, then burn your hand on the exhaust (great system)

Anyone know of any deals on Christmas trees? My wife wants a nicer one for next year. I see they are 50% off now. They should drop more the day after Christmas right?

Swing by here Jan 2nd. You can have mine. It will be out on the curb for yard trimmings pick up. Better get here quick! It’s a 9 footer. Might want to keep the trunk in a bucket of water until next year though.

It's not really meant for cars. It's meant for small engines, like a generator or lawn mower. If you could get the tube to the bottom of the oil pan it would probably work though. There would be no need to block anything off, think of it like a tiny vacuum cleaner..

Anyone hear if TopCashback will be doing Lowe’s cash back again?

Ebates site says they no longer are affiliated with Lowe’s and they are no longer letting them offer cash back

I have the same setup.

Any concerns about the fuel vapors igniting as the pass through the vacuum pump?
.
It's a diesel so not at all.

I doubt there would be an ignition source in the vacuum part of the pump for gasoline either- just the normal sparks on the motor side of it.

I believe Lowe's stopped doing anything with affiliate linking. The same time cash back stopped, sites like ToolGuyd had all their links from all articles break, which presumably was getting an affiliate fee. Even if they weren't getting a fee, the linking system changed the same day TopCashBack stopped offering. Also about the same time the $20 off $100 coupons stopped appearing. I have a feeling someone at Lowe's finally realized they didn't need all these payouts/discounts to still compete with HD.

Rather sad hopefully it gets brought back sometime. Perhaps the Black Friday Werner ladder price mishap and $25 off $25 coupon was the straws that broke the camels back. I’ve got a pretty penny from TopCashBack with Lowe’s and will miss it.

Maybe static electricity? Probably not a concern for diesel, maybe gas though.

I haven’t bought a real tree in years, but every year I wonder how many people return their live tree after Christmas? Last time I checked, they had a 90 return policy. :lol_hitti

Seems like a valid concern, but so far have never needed to use it for gasoline- just trans fluid and diesel.

I have an old Ford Courier electric fuel pump wired with a cigar lighter plug that I use to transfer gasoline.

Last day to return holiday stuff at Lowe's is 12/26 according to the sign printed in my Lowe's. I asked if it should have been 12/24, and the customer service people thought the same thing.

The ONLY reason I would return a tree is of it was invested with something, which is a possibility. Returning these kind of limited use items, only makes prices go up & policies to get stricter

Merry Christmas

Just FYI -If you look up an item on Lowes.com and it has that orange clearance sign on top of the price , chances are the price is lower in the store. So either go into the store to buy it or buy it online for listed price but return and re-buy once you go there to pick up. The latter scenario is for a case where stock is really limited and there’s a chance somebody else might get it before you.
And some of you might have noticed this while doing a price check on BS but Lowes website had a higher price. **Don’t ruin your chance of scoring a deal by calling the store for a price check****
Like I already indicated above- the tell-tale sign is the orange clearance sticker on top of price (as pictured)5cca284fbb013a9753d0b8ac9e494349.jpg

At home has some nice ones at 50% off. I picked one up from Sears the other day. 7' LED with rotating base and 8 or so functions. It will even put on a light show to music. Originally $400 and I got it for $102. Then I ran back to at home for some 50% off ornaments. All in under $140 for the tree, skirt, and everything on the tree.04ab2f63e0a0ba502749d6ab7e2603a2.jpg

I guess you guys are right.
Says right on the page.I guess I got another dust collector.
"The small engine LiquiVac is a must have for all DIYers. It is perfect for lawn mowers, lawn and garden tractors, tillers, generators, snow throwers, ATV's, and many other small engine applications. This powerful vacuum extraction system makes changing all types of fluid quick, easy, and eliminates the mess."
EDIT,
This one says for cars.

Except the one for lawn mowers is still to big for mine, at least coming in from the top. Mine has a fine layer of dust on it somewhere

you guys do know you can add on a piece of hose, right?

or add on a section of smaller hose to fit a tighter dipstick tube.

all it takes is a plastic vacuum fitting and a couple small hose clamps.

You can only go small of a diameter before the viscosity becomes to great. Then whatever barb used to combine the two tubes reduces that even further

I can't even imagine how small the hose would have to be to fit in my dipstick tube? Like someone mentioned earlier though, it would probably work great for a transmission.

Some cars don’t even have dipstick...

beelsr, Have you personally had success filling a smaller tube and putting it down the dipstick (Oil) and drawing the oil out?
I know I have been threatening to change the oil in my compressor, so I could at least use it for that.

I have a Pela 6000 that comes in this configuration. There's about 3' of clear plastic flexible hose followed by another 3' of thin rigid tubing. It very much reminds me of bicycle cable sheath.

The thin part goes in the dipstick tube perfectly.

It unwieldy when working on small stuff like lawn mowers or brake fluid reservoirs.

That's why I'm in for one of these Lowes units.

I noticed that too back when they had the mega-front-of-store clearance... I would see some items online with the new orange clearance tag, and almost every time in store the price was (considerably) lower.

Just FYI -If you look up an item on Lowes.com and it has that orange clearance sign on top of the price , chances are the price is lower in the store.

didn't want to keep polluting the thread, but yes.

not all unions are constricting, e.g. https://www.zoro.com/zoro-select-hose-mender-38-in-barb-brass-6afh5.

and i've connected different sized hoses and pulled fluids out of all kinds of tanks. if you think rubber hose is too thick or has too high a wall thickness, use some flexible copper tubing. thread sealant helps there.

also, pro tip: viscosity thins when warmed.

i honestly don't get the skepticism over an $8 tool that works a treat.
