Awesome work guys, I was sitting here in my chair chuckling away while reading this update on the crossmember.

Stellar work.

And having been there, I feel privileged that I understand a bit more about the processes and just how much work goes into it.

Like seeing your first child being born, this has to feel amazing.

Thank you both for sharing, Andy and JB.

Andy: while you are probably working on something else or maybe rounding up more aluminum i apologize if it sounded like your new part you made from JB wasn't perfect. as JB mentioned the line i saw as 2 pours was actually where the mold was glued together.

I also have been to JB's thread and saw that he made a couple tweaks and the cross member you made is now on his car.

VERY WELL DONE GUYS!!

hope you are enjoying you day and doing whatever you love to do and hope all is as good as can be with your bride and your critters.

cheers

Andy I really like your theme. I come and watch all the time.

So glad to have you stop by. I learn a lot from you.

I'll steal a little of Andy's thunder, don't tell him, I'm sure he would hate a thief. As y'all have seen Andy has been working on building a pattern off of the cross member I built to cast it from aluminum. This will be going in my '57 Chevy I'm doing a lot of work on including a 6 speed manual trans swap and frame stiffening that required a one off design. Here was the original cross member, don't judge it too harshly please:
attachment.php

I brought him a hundred pounds or so of aluminum to replenish some of his stock. Here is the stock he chose to use, mostly old duramax parts so I'm at least keeping the material all GM:
attachment.php

From lighting until everything was melting and poured only took 21 minutes. I didn't get a photo of the pattern but here is the master at work pouring:
attachment.php

Fresh out of the sand:
attachment.php

Machining off the sprue:
attachment.php

New vs. old after a little cleanup:
attachment.php

And including his stamp of approval:
attachment.php

I've done some more work on it and started drilling holes to get it all installed, so far so good. Thanks a ton for the help in creating another one off part that will only be seen by a select few, and roadkill.:bowdown:

JB

So glad you took some pictures and posted them. I've been a bit preoccupied with other stuff and really don't have many pictures. You did great!

That is awesome work, on Andy's part as well as you. Cant wait to see the finished product installed!

Thanks!! I'm eager to see what he does too!

JB: while your part probably would have worked ANDY (and his assistant-you) did a great job on that new part. not many might see or know its on your 57 rebuild, but you will and I bet that will keep Andy and all of us smiling.

ANDY: looks like it worked out well. is the line in the pour where two pours meet or just a look the aluminum has when you pour that much into the sand?

WELL DONE SIR!!

hope you enjoy your day while i'm resting and reading and learning and ORGANIZING (in my head) today.

cheers

His steel part was perfectly functional, but he knows I need the casting practice.

Hopefully Andy doesn't mind too much if I answer your question drives. That line above his name is where two pieces of foam were glued together. Here is the foam mold before the sprue was installed and painted with drywall compound:
attachment.php

Another angle:
attachment.php

You can see where the different pieces of foam were glued together and eventually they left tell tales in the finished part:
attachment.php

Also just to update everyone I have all of the holes drilled and tapped as necessary. I installed it this morning before work:

attachment.php

Once again I'd like to say thank you to Andy.

JB

To further JB's great answer, the foam is glued using low temperature hot melt glue. Then I have a mix of 50/50 paraffin and toilet bowl ring wax which is brushed on melted to seal cracks. The area in the picture is all raised and if ground off would show solid metal.

Support looks good, JB!

Wow! What's the weight differance?

About 3 pounds. Steel is about 4 lbs and aluminum a little over 1 lb.

That’s just plain cool. Great job Andy. Another part where a future owner or buddy will be searching the web for a JBM brand cross member.

Thanks, Shorty!!

:bowdown::bowdown:

Very nice! It's really cool what you're able to cast.

I'm lucky that my local scrapyard will sell material that they take in. I think last time I bought it was $.30 lb for I beam and square tube.

Thanks! Certainly your imagination is the limit for everything we all do.

$0.30/lb is a pretty fair deal.

I meant to weigh it D.M., but don't have a scale that will accurately weigh something that small. I'd guess a pound or two as a complete guess.

I should stamp P/N "BR-549" on it just to mess with people down the road. Of course by then they could 3D scan it then 3D print it with their phone. Actually not too far off from that now.

JB

My complete guess was different than yours:lol_hitti

BR-549, my favorite.

Thank you, Rian!! I admit I was really puckered up pouring that pattern as JB needed to take it back with him (I had been so slow) so we only had the one shot to pour it.

No, the part is not perfect, it's home made. And I appreciate the question.

Looking at his picture of it installed, I wish I'd put a generous radius from the center section to the ears. I had planned on that but didn't know how close his supports came to the center section.

Very nice work. Have a Merry Christmas all. Bobby

Thanks, Bobby!

The cross-member looks great Andy. [emoji106]

Merry Christmas Andy..

Thanks! Sounds like you need to drop by for a visit. I'd love to learn from you, too. Exchange of ideas is always useful.

You might have noticed I've been scarce lately. Our friend with throat cancer got a poor report from MD Anderson in Houston. Sharon told me she wanted to go see them, about 10:00 Tuesday morning. Flying would really be a problem for her so later Tuesday I changed the oil and bought new tires for her car on the way to Houston. We stayed at Ennis, Texas for the night. Called them Wednesday morning and invited them to lunch. They thought it was a joke, but I told them as long as we're in the area... Finally got to their hotel at 1:30 after stopping and getting an emergency prescription in Corsicana, TX (I forgot to pack her nausea medicine :() and we had a nice lunch. They were touched :). Made it back to Corsicana by 9:00 PM and stayed in the same hotel. Breakfast attendant asked how many days we would be staying with them :lol_hitti Ripped it on home and got home by 4:30 for her to watch Jeopardy.

I'm beat. Have my son's family for Christmas lunch today (I'm fixing, made two pies last night) then Christmas lunch at Zumba teacher's house Monday, two more pies, then at my sister in law's on Christmas, tow more pies. Sold a rent house and we close on Wednesday so I'll see you guys next Thursday...

Merry Christmas to one and all, love your families.

It was. We spent several weeks in Houston during Sharon's surgery and subsequent treatment and visitors from home were always welcome. You're on a short leash when you're doing radiation daily.

Andy, wishing you and yours have a merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year:thumbup:

Thanks Steve! It tickles me no end that your progress is steady and the right direction.

JB was kind enough to catch up on the crossmember, but here's the two picture I managed to take. First is JB vibrating the loose sand around the pattern.

attachment.php

And here he is holding both his steel part and the aluminum replacement.

attachment.php

On the way to Texas I had to get tires. I'm cheap and was wearing them out. They were fine for driving around town but not 80 mph with a sudden rainstorm on a freeway. The tire store in Sapulpa started life in the twenties as a Ford assembly plant, according to local folklore. They were kind enough to do our work outside under a shed roof so my wife could stay in the car. I happened to notice this air manifold.

attachment.php

A four outlet tee labeled 4 Portman. Pretty cool cast iron.

My son and seven of his family showed up for lunch today. So I fixed lunch for ten. This is not normal for me but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. We had brisket, home made mashed potatoes, gravy, candied carrots, baked beans, green beans, spinach, deviled eggs, pickled beets, bread, and, of course, pumpkin pie.

attachment.php

Afterward we went shooting. They like their guns. I like shooting too. Here's my grandson with an AK-47. He's a pretty good shot. As is the other two grand kids (even the Studekotagranddaughter).

attachment.php

I wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas!! I am so blessed to have Garage Journal friends.

Andy: while I'm sure the trip to Houston regarding the circumstances can't have been FUN so to speak i'm happy to hear you made it and that your friends and wife (and you) were able to see each other cause sounds like the days are numbered that the 4 of you will be able to do that. also sounds like your friends are GOOD PEOPLE like you certainly are.

Also like so many of us here at GJ it's been a pleasure following along with ANDY'S ADVENTURES cause probably not a better ride to be found.

here's to a MERRY CHRISTMAS and another good year in 2019 with you and your CABOOSE, 60 tractors, Studadakota and of course your melting metals just to name a few things.

When people used to ask how I was doing at work, I'd respond "I've been better, but I've been worse. Knowing how life goes, I may not have had my worst day yet, but there's a chance I've had my best day. Oh no, I hope not!!"

May 2019 be the best year yet!

I like your line. Reminds me of another one of mine:

"I'd rather be here than ICU. But if you need to be in ICU there's no better place!"

Useful information here? I'm sorry, please note any found and I'll promptly remove it so as to not offend anyone.

Happy Christmas Andy. I pray it's filled with love and joy.

Thank you! We did have a great Christmas, and even got some casting in.

Sand mold for the dive pump cap pattern is hard to make. This time I messed it up again but decided to use it anyway. The smashed top was from holding down a metal disc on the sand as I was trying to remove the pattern.

attachment.php

The defect just makes the brass a little thicker on one side, but you can't see it from the outside.

It was late in the day when I got the furnace heating.

attachment.php

The pour went well, a little spilled on the top. It's still warm.

attachment.php

A few small defects, I think they can be repaired. We'll see how that goes.

attachment.php

I'm not going to cut up this sprue but make a brass punch from it.

Andy: I think the Oklahoma wind is blowing up some smells of homemade pumpkin pie. YUM!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

We're just not having much wind, we've had a very calm fall and now winter. But you may have caught a whiff of the pies.:bounce:

Yesterday (Christmas Eve), on the way to lunch at my Zumba teacher's, there is a bridge under major renovation with a single lane an stop lights. While waiting we noticed a wild turkey milling around, looked like she was bumming from the stopped cars...

attachment.php

I thought maybe she wanted to go to dinner... :lol_hitti

Have a happy and prosperous New Year!!

Congratulations on finally getting the pour done well..

Thanks, Steve! I'll be glad to finally finish up the two brass castings. I'm learning a lot.

I need to make me some hex and square stock to use for future sprues so I can cast a punch with each pour.

Hope your holidays are going well. :)

Hey Andy, I'm glad you're Christmas has gone well!!

I have a suggestion on the mold halves I think you called it the flask? For your long dive pump cap to help with alignment could you add 2 longer pieces of angle to the other 2 corners, or add a pipe in bushing.. if you were to look up a plastic injection mold the 2 or 4 leader pins on the outer corners of the mold generally keep the mold halves lined up when opening and closing the mold.. might help when separating the halves having the extra length..?

Good luck.. and thank you for sharing your experiences..

We had a great Christmas! Let's all have a prosperous 2019!

Watching the yacht race sounds like fun. But I understand the race went south this year.

Oh, she {the turkey} could go to dinner...on a platter!

That's what I was thinking...

Talking turkey.

Looks like a good result around with the baking and casting.

If my dad was there, the turkey would become a passenger.

I think the turkey was talking.

Haulin' turkey, huh? Did your dad pick up lots of hitch hikers?

Thanks for the visit!

Thank you!

I did have difficulty aligning the cope and drag (top and bottom of the flask) but I added the two angles, not as alignment guides but as references. The patterns taper enough they can be quite mis-aligned until the last few inches and still do well. Once I added the angles alignment was not a problem. Getting the pattern off the sand was an issue.

I wish you happiness, health and love in 2019.

I wish the same for you Terrick! And for success in finishing your house.

Today I received a nice card, letter, and a dandy gift from Sawdust Steve.

Andy: you sir have some skills at PIE MAKING and I bet they were pretty tasty too.

i'm crossing my fingers that you figure out the CONE MAKING SOLUTION which i'm sure you will.

when you say not TOO WINDY i'm guessing it's still 10+ MPH cause i can't recall any days in Oklahoma when the wind didn't blow.
