Andy: you sir have some skills at PIE MAKING and I bet they were pretty tasty too.

i'm crossing my fingers that you figure out the CONE MAKING SOLUTION which i'm sure you will.

when you say not TOO WINDY i'm guessing it's still 10+ MPH cause i can't recall any days in Oklahoma when the wind didn't blow.

Pies were good, and we're still working on the last one.

Thanks, cones are done, just awaiting cleanup.

We have some dead still days, and some windy days. The wind is more of a joke than real, although our percentage of windy days may be more than some areas. Looks like we have 4 mph right now and you have three. So we're 30% higher!:lol_hitti

Nice gifting Steve.

Looks like you may need to become Sharon’s secret Santa

Capital idea!!

Thanks, Mullet Steve!!

Andy, you and your wife are most welcome, a merry xmas and a happy new year to you both and all your family.
I'm glad it arrived in one piece, and better late than never.

Yipee ki yay.

Howdy, Steve! (We do routinely use the word howdy, and not just to be quaint). Biscuits are quite unique and tasty, thanks again!!

I've been watching the wind in Tulsa and Seattle. Yesterday we were 3 mph and they were 15 mph. Today we're dead calm, Tulsa reporting 1 mph and Seattle 1 mph. I'm enjoying comparing the two.

My friends from Brazil stopped by yesterday. He has some classic American cars. When I asked him how many he had, he had to stop to count, then said 8 or 9. His wife rolled her eyes and I told him you've finally got enough when you can't remember. And more doesn't affect the count that way.

Andy: that's too funny cause the WIND actually woke me up today at 3:30am. it's has been windy up here lately and I think last week we had winds over 50mph, but that is pretty rare here in PARADISE.

We'll have to keep an eye on this in 2019 and see who's living where the air blows harder.

hope you have a relaxing day after you feed all the critters and you and your lovely wife.

cheers

You wouldn't think there'd be that much wind out there what with all the covered wagons roaming around the prairie and such blocking the wind :lol_hitti

JB, they gave up the covered wagons long ago, and you knew that. They ride around in a surrey with the fringe on top.

We still have the Conestoga wagons here in Kansas, fitted with sails of course.

It is funny the last several days as I've been checking, you've had more wind than us. Now we're 6 mph and you're 2 mph. I'm using Bing Weather to compare.

Rain is something else. We had 1/2" overnight several days back but beautiful clear blue skies all day until today when we had a Seattle overcast.

I think the buffalo (Bison to you who don't know) cut a lot of wind.

Actually, the current mode of transportation on the prairie is the pickup truck, a typical family vehicle which has developed into a luxury vehicle with the addition of a second seat. Most of us have double dated in a single seat pickup.

Interestingly the Conestoga was pretty much an Eastern heavy freight wagon, six horses and six ton load, IIRC.

The wind powered wagon is a cool concept, sometimes pulled in calm areas by Jackalopes harnessed in six or eight rabbit teams.

I think the modern pickup truck is the direct descendant of the buckboard.

Just think, the modern pickup will soon be able to drive itself. What's new isn't so new, as more than a century ago the buckboard was able to find its way home by itself. Or at least the horse hitched to it could. :) And it ran on renewable energy sources, and its emissions were fertilizer.

Went to Walmart today, and witnessed a level of class I ddin't even know existed.

attachment.php

Only had a little shop time, but I started welding up a shrink crack in one of the brass castings. I'm new to brass welding. It took more heat than I was expecting and had to put my cutting tip on to get enough heat.

attachment.php

Since the crack has contamination in it I'm having to grind it out part way to get the filler to flow in. I was dreaming I might just fuse the crack with no filler but that was not working out.

attachment.php

Ugly, isn't it?

The end user is planning on machining the entire exterior surface.

Thanks for stopping by.

Andy, you were at Walmart so it's not too big a surprise. However, that right there is why I wouldn't let Liane put this on any of our cars -- it's on the garage freezer. She really thinks Miss Ellie is smart but I don't see it. She's a wonderful little dog but I wouldn't ask her to take me to the airport.

Andy, I don't know if that's ugly or not. I haven't done any gas welding in so long that I can't have an opinion. But in a burst of enthusiasm based on some things I've read over in Robert's thread (MP&C Shop Projects) I'm in the process of putting together a new gas rig.

As regards the door ding warning sign, I quickly learned to hold the door, even rest my hand on the door edge, as my daughter exits the vehicle. Kids don't know better when they are young - it's everything they can do to open the door and get out without falling. She didn't even think about door dings. It's on me and my wife to ensure my daughter didn't ding the neighbor's car.

On the other hand, my wife and daughter and I went to see a movie the other day, and when we got back out to our car, the guy next to us was way over the line and crowding our car. I had to crawl over the center console from the passenger side to get into the drivers seat. Quite the feat, considering my 6'7" frame.

I think I'm getting old, because I threw my back out doing that.

Bob, around here there was a fad putting "My kid beat up your honor student" bumper stickers on their cars. It was sorta, mildly amusing one time, but after the 1000th time it definitely wasn't.

I'm not sure taking you to the airport is the litmus test, but I have a few:

1 Can your dog figure out what's wrong with your computer like a kid can?

2 Can your dog go to bed and be quiet when told to, to avoid getting into trouble?

3 Can your dog keep it's mouth shut instead of embarrassing you in public?

With my dog and my kid (although he's 50 in people years, that's only a seven year old dog) I find the dog wins two out of three.

Have you tried the dog vs wife who loves me test? Put them both in the car trunk (I know, those hardly exist anymore) for 30 minutes and see who loves you when you open the trunk.

:twak:Sadly that sticker is true, instead of being taught to be careful out of respect for others property.

No question it's true, but the colorful language shows a window into the person's character.

I can gas weld steel fairly proficiently. It's sure the right process in some situations and well worth learning. I was having trouble getting enough heat into the metal without blowing the liquid metal away. The base metal may have some lead in it too, which boils right away leaving a spongy surface. I can't remember what lead vapors do to you...

The inability of others to park properly is a whole new infuriating subject. I pride myself in putting my car squarely between the lines even when the car next to me is over their line. Crawling over the console when necessary to get out.:lol_hitti (Lot's of people would be surprised to find there are lines on the surface for parking guidance).

Probably my worst offense was at work when a very nice car was angled across two parking spaces. Up close to the building. If you need two parking spaces because you don't have transportation and have to drive your pride and joy show piece among the great unwashed at least park it out in the far reaches of an empty parking lot, not next to the building. (plenty of parking may be an odd American occurrence). In any event I was driving my 75 Honda Civic (just larger than a Smart car) and I judged there was room between the angled rear of his car and the straight parked car next to him so I squeezed through, and by pulling my car to the front of the space, I was able to jockey it back and forth until my car was centered in my parking space, with it looking like he wheeled in and blocked me in. I had at least 2" between my car and his. Unfortunately I was a tad late getting off work and only was able to see him burning rubber down the parking lot. I will never ding someone else's car except on rare wind gust occasions that catch me off guard.

Although I was never an honor student, I was the subject of bullying at school for many years. We moved with my dad's job, state to state, and it seems with every new school I forgot to take the "kick me" sign off my back. So I have never been in favor of

1 Advertising that the child is an honor student at Don't Have to Try Elementary, or

2 That aggressive behavior toward mild mannered children is either funny or that it somehow does the picked on child good by making them more aggressive.

I must admit some satisfaction in being able to be kind to tough guys working for me in later years rather than demeaning them and making them suffer unnecessarily. Most childhood bullies suffer enough from their own poor choices that they don't need help.

Hmmm, serious subjects, I guess, back to trying to learn to clean brass chemically before welding.

I havent tried it on pure brass, but muratic acid works good to clean a copper/brass radiator prior to soldering. As I'm sure you know, just be careful , its pretty stout stuff, and flush well with water. Good Luck.
Also, nothing wrong with preheating your casting with a rosebud before trying to gas weld it. Good Luck

I hear you Andy. I feel the same way!!! One needs to be careful when parking, to make sure to not piss off others. You never know what response you will get!

Unfortunately, the cause is often the parking lot planner that fails to make the spaces large enough. Costco *usually* paints a boulevard between parking spaces so you don't have to take two spaces to protect your car doors. I wish other retailers would take a lesson.

Cheers!

Here’s to bringing in a great New Years.

I was pretty sure they have a high class clientele.

A British friend once admonished me: "Don't worry, you have culture, Andy, you get it from yogurt."

I think I'll try vinegar first, take some time.

I didn't preheat, and should have. Thanks.

I'm really against vandalizing others' cars. Parking lots are expensive, so I can see smaller spaces, but many retailers go far too narrow.

One of my pet peeves is the shrinking dimensions of marked parking spaces - some parallel spaces are actually shorter than a couple of my cars. [emoji15]

The spaces at my new workplace are only a couple of inches wider than the F100, so I have to park right on the line on one side to open a door (depending on how the other cars are parked, I sometimes get in and out via the passenger side). [emoji19]

.
Happy New year Andy.

Happy New Year Andy.

Happy New Year, hope its a good one.

Happy 19 to all!!

As a farmer, you always expect a better year (or you'd quit).

Weather update, 25F and 2 mph in Tulsa, 36F and 3 mph in Seattle. I'd take the 36/3 this morning :)

ALL: yep city parking guidelines sure don't allow for anything much bigger than a PRIUS and even the parking garages. one of the reasons I took my 86 year old mom to the hospital to visit my dad every day for 2+ weeks last summer that took an hour out of my days last summer was because she didn't want to dent up her newer car in the hospital's parking garage. Even though I wanted to stop and see dad i'd like to see the parking spaces everywhere made a bit bigger.

one thing California is now doing (I heard from a good source and haven't confirmed) is making it standard to put in a charging station in every new home's garage starting this year.

Andy: yep it's nice here today and maybe a bit cold, but as i've heard there is no such thing as bad weather and just bad clothing choices. it is supposed to be raining and very windy the coming 7 or so days. I do like seeing your comparisons on a daily basis and if you maintain this during the summer maybe the winds and temps on your end might be quite a bit higher.

any plans of making an aluminum car that is full electric?

BOB: sure sounds nice, but I still haven't been to Florida to check out the rumors that your weather is PERFECT.

The universal charging station requirement sounds wonderful should it fit the electric car you choose to buy. I'm not sure they're standardized yet, but, hey, if it uses up some copper and insulation and keep some union electricians busy, I'm all for it. In California.

32/0 Tulsa and 45/7 in Seattle. You're a close second to Bob:bounce:

I think there is no question we have a wider temperature variation, but I'm surprised by our non-scientific sampling. I'm enjoying it too.

Poor clothing choices are us. It only takes a few minutes to walk 150 yards, feed, and come back, so I usually fail to dress warmly until we're under 20F. My choice.

I have plans to make an aluminum car, but just a toy. Don't know my quota. But let's call it a toy-ota.

And 19 just keeps rolling along. We're 1/2% done with it.

Let's see, we've got to pay taxes, it'll get hot, we'll pass out candy, and here comes Santa!!

I bought a pair of magnetic "bumpers" I can put on my car doors to protect them, as I have pretty narrow spaces at my condo. Naturally, the one time I don't use them, the neighbors who can't park, are entitled, and have rambunctious children dinged my door multiple times. At least the PDR guy was able to fix them for not too much money.

Andy: i'm not sure what your weatherman says, but i'm guessing the PNW has more wind than almost anywhere last night and today. I think the coast had 60MPH and we are about 60-100 miles in from there on the other side of a big mountain range and I bet we still got 30-40mph.

not a bad day though cause i think it hit in the 50's.

hope all is well in your world and are you melting or fabbing or just relaxing and baking a few more pies?

cheers

The one time you didn't use them. So, it was all your fault?:lol_hitti

Jan 1, 2019 was a high of -1F with a low of -23F here. Winter has come .... psh. You don't know what winter is down there in always warm lala land :lol_hitti

It's been several years since we had our -25F. But I worked on the Alaskan North Slope and in Russia and have seen chilly weather. Maybe there's a reason I live where I do?:headscrat

Al Gore seems to have fixed our winters. Our below zero temperatures used to be the last week of December and first three weeks of January. The last several years we've had a few cold spells into the teens and fifites through January and February. I'm not complaining. Summers we rarely see 104F.

Yesterday evening we were 50F 4mph and Seattle was 52F 7 mph. this morning we're 35/2 vs 46/0. It feels dead calm out here.

I was running around all day yesterday, closing on my last three rent houses. Still have one sold last summer scheduled for January closing but as of today I really am out of the rental business. That's a nice feeling. Then to the courthouse to file deeds and mortgages. My new realtor has come to appreciate that I do my own closings and there's no closing company involved. My last buyer is a lawyer and did her own courthouse search so there were no abstracting costs either. Cheap, fast and easy. That's me.:lol_hitti

The whole closing system is designed to protect the mortgage company against unscrupulous sellers and when the seller carries the mortgage that nonsense just can go away. The buyer has a general warranty deed from me anyway and I'll correct any deficiencies which might show up.:bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

Happy new year Andy.
Used your broom to sweep the country store today and wanted to say thanks again for the gift

Happy 19 to you too, Don!

Glad the broom has had some use.:bounce:

Here we are, first weekend of the new year.

Wishing you and Sharon all you need and some of what you want for the year ahead Andy.

Thanks so much Rian! We're doing well, and 2019 is running out fast. We're already 1-1/2% spent. Where does time go?

Please take time this year to comfort your eyecare professionals. My Optometrist is already feeling the stress knowing on January 1 everyone will suddenly be seeing 2020.

Been in the 70's here too; anybody want some rain? Going back to the 50's today but finally some sun. Wet ground is keeping me from a lot of projects I would rather not try to accomplish at 100 degrees F.

Andy: you just changed the name of your tenants cause you are still sort of in the rental business collecting payments and hoping they don't burn the place down. in any case i'm very happy you've maybe moved on from the day to day rental stuff. BIG CONGRATS!!!!

are you recording DEED of TRUSTS or REAL ESTATE CONTRACTS? in all my years i can't recall anybody up here doing their own recordings like you do. WELL DONE SIR!!

have a wonderful SATURDAY!!

i'm planning a small road trip to pick up some metal cabinets with my bride today and letting her find the place where we might find some good eats.

my bride usually pulls our tomato plants in October and for some reason hasn't pulled them yet. looks like I need to do some sweeping cause maters are all over my sidewalk after yesterday's wind (it was a LOT MORE THAN 7mph). this is farming city style. hard to imagine fresh tomatoes in January without a greenhouse.

cheers

You're going back to the 50's? I'd kind of like to do that. Might buy a brand new 55 Nomad.

Oh, not really, holding the mortgage I don't have to hope they pay, I have the power of foreclosure, and the buyers are more financially stable. While I would never hope a house would burn down, that would be an mortgage payoff through insurance payment to me. As long as it's not arson I'm ambivalent. And I have no insurance or tax payments coming out of my money.

Seems we've had this discussion before. A deed of trust is an unfamiliar term to me, but I think it is some type of mortgage. We have quit claim deeds and warranty deeds, among others. I prepare and sign a deed and the buyer signs a mortgage I made out. Then everything gets notarized and filed in the courthouse as a matter of record. If the buyer does not meet the terms of the mortgage I can go to court and reclaim the property. I guess not too many people do their own mortgages, deeds, and filings here either. It confuses most professionals I deal with. But my mortgages and deeds have been acceptable in subsequent transactions, such as when a buyer refinances with a major mortgage company to lower their interest rate.

Thank you.

Fresh tomatoes without a greenhouse in January sounds like Bobby's place.:lol_hitti

Hope you had a great road trip!

I finally got back to the shop today. I shipped the brass covers to the guy in California, but forgot to take a picture of them completed. :(

I spent a while cleaning screws and nails out of salvaged window frames.

My aluminum stash was getting out of hand and I needed to get some converted to ingots. Cleaning up!

See how much better it looks? :bounce:

Me neither.

Only making ingots I was getting a crucible poured every 11 minutes. Oil is turned down to keep from overheating the stainless steel crucible. You can see a little flame coming out the flue and the yellow air damper is almost closed.

I did eleven melts today. Total of 50 lbs of ingots made and a big dent in the stack of window frames.

And I had loads of fun! 248 melts in the furnace now and I see no deterioration. It's a keeper.

Seems like you made good use of a great day.
Your ingots should be easier to store.
