So I’m working for an old timer down the road for the winter just to have something to do until my busy seasons kicks back in when the weather warms up. This old man took his millions and opened up a limestone wuarry about ten years ago just to have something to do. So today, he and I were replacing head gaskets on one of his many 50 ton off toad haul trucks. He had one of his service trucks pulled up close with easily a 100 grand in hand tools, mostly snap on but some Mac and other odd balls in there. He yelled down to his helper to grab another ratchet and some extensions and the helper asked which one? The old man chimed back and said “anything bit snap on, they aint nothing but over priced JUNK”!!!! He went on to say how he’s spent big money on them with some ratchets costing over a grand each, and was the biggest waste of money ever. Lol
He said I don’t give a damn if you’re a certified mechanic because I’ve seen way better mechanics with no training at all, and he doesn’t give a rats *** how much a tool costs that expensive doesn’t equal quality. He followed it up with how us younger men need to learn from the guys who’s been around the block a time or two, don’t buy stupid **** just because everyone else is. Lmao

Interesting guy. Hes got 100k in tools (mostly snap on) and he hates them? If you spent 100k on something you hate, not the wisest in my book, despite him telling us we should learn from him lol.

I'm going to go the opposite direction. I always advocated for quality middle of the pack tools, and still do, but I started wrenching again at a real shop this week and the sheer amount of time spent with the tools, I can see why pros need/want snap on for certain things. I wrenched a lot on the side, and a fair amount as an EVT or so I thought, and in three days of work have used more tools than I did in the last 6 months. My Milwaukee ranchet and two snap on ratchets seem to gravitate towards my hand, even tho I brought my one Carlyle Ratchet and all four GW flex ratchets.

Sometimes it's not the equipment but the operator that's the issue, I'd like to find what ratchets that cost thousands of dollars.

IMO the guys nothing hut a big blowhard, the minute they start going on about all their money and what they spent then the less attention worth paying.

Yes a very interesting man for sure. Said he came from poverty, went into rodeo and was a two time world champion. Went into ranching and had a 15,000 head cattle farm and bred and trained rodeo horses that he sold for a quarter million each. Sold it all and turned his massive ranch into anhuge quarry. One of the most mechanically gifted men I’ve ever come across - and I use to work in the largest automotive/diesel shops in the state. So I’ve been around a while lot of wrenching in my life.
he invested heavily into a lot of tools at once to operate his business. He’s a man who believes in buying the best you can afford, he just doesn’t believe the best is always the popular stuff.

I agree with him about learning from the older people. Some of the most useful and helpful info I have learned came from men much older than myself. Their old-time stories are funny and interesting too.

No, he definitely isn’t a blowhard who brags about his money. He’s worth millions and wears the same clothes almost every day and drives a ragged out old ford ranger. He is one of the most modest guys you’ll ever come across. I happened to ask how much he oaid for the 3’ long 3/4” snap in ratchets he had, he didn’t just brag about ihem.

This post wasn’t meant to anger anyone, was just sharing what I experienced today. I knew however, that this would generate some negative responses by people defending what they like. Everyone has an opinion. This one was just his.
I happen to think CZ rifles ( BRNO) are some if the finest rifles made but you’ll have other guys who despise them cause they grew up always hearing Ruger was the best you can buy. Same old story.

The guy is full of it. No one and I mean no one is spending 250k on a rodeo horse, these aren't purebred Arabians with a title under their name they are basic quarter horses and whatnot.

Problem with learning from the old guys is the store bought tools were good back in their day and now their ****. I use my dads craftsman tools from the 80s and compared to todays craftsman they might as well have been snap on. Todays store brand tools are slightly over priced harbor freight. I'll take my snap on flank drive + over any other wrench.

Considering alot of the HF/Taiwan hardline tools now are alot better than alot of the US Craftsman in part I'm not inclined to agree

Craftsman have never been exceptional tools in most regards, basic and mostly solid, bit their most popular ratchet US made is an absolute dog turd along with their combo wrenches

We're all tempered by experience. If I bought a $1000 3/4 or 1" drive ratchet and it didn't perform well I might have ended up with the same opinion as this guy. Who knows what he bought and what happened to it that made him hate Snap-on.

Is his opinion strictly rational? No. But neither is my hatred of Chrysler. Recognizing its irrationality doesn't make it go away though.

I cracked a snap on socket from one of my grandfather’s sets and not knowing a dealer getting a replacement was a pain, the size wasn’t available readily anymore (19/32 12pt 1/2 inch drive). I’d imagine if something similar happened and I’d paid a lot I wouldn’t necessarily be happy.

There are a lot of other tool brands between the store's house brand and Snap-On. Personally, I have turned to Wright and SK when I'm looking for any US-made hand tools. I just find the value/dollar to not be there when it comes to the truck brands.

The Craftsman Professional line of combo wrenches have served me well since ~2006. But I do agree that the newer Taiwanese stuff is much better than it was a decade ago, too.

Tell him to go to HF. Advise him that your a member of one of the globes most prominent tool forums garage journal and that most members there recommend & buy HF tools. Let him know that for $1000 he would not just get ONE sub-standard ratchet to annoy him but could buy several hundred sub standard tools that he can complain about for many years. Despite others passing judgement on him, I think he sounds like an interesting ol fella who'd have a few good stories to tell, I kinda like him.

Don't ask.
A quarry is type of environment where tools get used hard. Sounds to me like he has a Snap-On ratchet (maybe a couple) in that size that he didn't want to use.
Possibly he had a bad experience with that one. Maybe it was worn out, damaged, needed a cleaning or just old technology.
Yes older ratchets are coarser feeling than many modern fine tooth ratchets (been that way since they were new).

I have a lot of Craftsman tools from the 80's. IMO they were good (better than other department store brands) but not the super high quality tools many people think they are.

Well his is right ASE certified means you have some basic knowledge and can pass a test. I am ASE Master Certified Heavy/Medium. the tests we not hard. I did not go to tech school but was trained in the NAVY. Any school gives you a basic understanding. It takes the Tech himself to learn. I am a Trainer now and I see good and bad techs during classes it dose not matter if they went to tech school or not. some guy get in the field and just don't put effort in.

Snap-on isn't junk but its hardly the best at everything.

Every brand has its gems.

What snap-on and the like are very good at is taking a reasonable selling price and multiplying it by a few.

As far as tool go I have Tools from a ton of different Manufacturers I will say I do not feel it matters as long as the tool is no causing damage(like loose fitting wrench or socket rounding off fasteners) . I can't work with out my Snap On Ratchets Snap On Wrenches and Snap On screw drivers they are my favorite and its just a way they feel thing not brand.

You're not by any chance a Seabee are you? I too did not go to any fancy school and training institution. All I have is A school and C school and 16 years or turning wrench.

And to be honest a lot of our kit13s were mix matched socket and wrench sets, everything from Pittsburgh to craftsman, Armstrong, black Hawk, snap on, wright, etc. You name it. But when it comes to sockets I've broken them all. My snap on wrenches just have a certain feel to them. All my sockets in my civilian box, none are snap on though, mostly husky craftsman and GW, they all serve me well

Lol that avitar is my sweet wife. You’ll not find her on the Internet as she says social media isn’t healthy for a marriage. She lives a quiet life as a stay at home mom. She’s a wonderful woman, best wife ever, and the greatest mom to our three kids.

You are a lucky man. She's intelligent, beyond beautiful (model like), stays away from social media ****.

The old man you're talking about sounds kinda nutty. lol

Thanks guys. Yeah I am a lucky man because of the kind of person she is, her looks are just a bonus. She is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on. It’s kinda comical because just as many women check her out and hit on her as the men. It’s unreal how often people tell her how beautiful she is.

I looked up a snap on 3/4” ratchet head ($293) and 36” handle ($123)

1” bumps the price up to ~$750
