12' OH Lift After Thought

Well of course things are never built big enough the first time. Thought my 24'x40' pole barn with 10' ceilings would be roomy enough. Kept the ceiling at 10' cause I figured it would save on heating/cooling and would be high enough for my purposes. But as an afterthought decided to add a lift but really preferred an over head lift with no floorplate and the capacity to lift up to 10,000lbs...(yeah I'll probably wish I had a 15,000 lb lift at some point...lol). Except for an occasional truck most of the cars I work on would allow me to stand even with the 10' ceiling height. My trusses being 4' OC and having over 12' height clearance over a 12' span in between them led me to this idea. Keeping the ceiling at 10' but "boxing in" and at the same time insulating a space to fit the overhead lift. Just figured I'd post my hacked solution to this issue in case anyone else runs in to a similar situation or anyone can comment on better solutions (other than building the ceiling higher in the first place).

You'll just have to make sure you're top stop is set to stop the vehicle from hitting the lower part of the ceiling. My two post, like all I've seen, has the bar across the top to stop the vehicle.

 Yes...I'm planning on some how lowering the stop or just being extremely careful as one with a floor plate lift and no top stop would have to be. But yes indeed I would prefer to have a stop for the added safety of preventing a vehicle from going thru my ceiling .

I wouldn't trust myself to be careful. I definitely know just that one time I wouldnt be thinking and would hear the dreadful "crunch" sound. My overhead beam has asimple cushioned rod going a cross resting on a normally open push button.

Yes... you are correct ... better safe than sorry ... I will fabricate some sort of extension off the existing bar to activate it a few inches below 10’ or maybe relocate the existing bar somehow

Ok..ok... 20 lashes for me. I already have a 24x40 garage with 12’ 6” ceilings attached to the house and was originally building this for storage with just a few outlets and a lighting circuit. The lift was going to go in the attached garage but my wife insists on using part of it to park her car and starts freaking out when I’m welding or doing anything with power tools with her car in the garage. Yes , I did discuss my plan previous to the build and yes I can move her car in and out but then my stuff starts creeping into her section and doesn’t move for days. In short ..trust me at this point it’s easier to try to get the lift in the polebarn and make that my welding/auto shop instead of my attached garage.
