I put a car muffler on my compressor intake to make it about 3 dB (50% less noise) quieter. About $50 total.

Here is the video:

It just installed a pair of Solberg air filter/silencers on mine. Made about the same noise reduction.

Biggest noise reduction I made was balancing the crankshaft. Took most of the vibration and associated noise out of it.

I looked into solberg. A 1" muff is $75-100.

That's pretty cool.

It would be a cool garage project/conversation piece in my garage if I did a custom intake on my compressor with a polished Borla.

I wonder, if your compressor is close to an outside wall, could you just run a pipe or a hose to the outside...

Has me thinking...

"run the intake outside and call it a day. "

Until the neighbors come knocking.

I don't want to get the neighbors angry. I'm in the garage early morn and late at night. Also, my garage is block/brick, so I'ld have to rent a hammerdrill and 2.5" coring bit.

I remember your excellent post and photos about reducing vibration sans noise reduction. Weighted the pulley to reduce up/down vibration.

You needed to check the decibels before you cut the hole in the air filter to get an accurate before and after result.

Here is my solution... HF for 2.99 I have a pair hanging on each wall of the garage for other tools that make noise as well, especially the portaband on the stand. I keep my blast cabinet next to the compressor because I figure if it wasn't for the compressor then the dust collection would be making hella racket anyways and I'm in a residence so I can't stick it outside (at least not until I investigate building a hush house for both of those items, lol).

Matt, I really love that HF cabinet Vapor Blaster you setup. It is on my list of things to do.

This has me thinking I might have just found a use for that old Titanium GSXR muffler I was originally going to use on my DR650 lol.

Would you share some more about balancing the crank?

The folks over at DRRiders would have a $$$bounty poster out on you if you waste that Titanium muffler on a compressor.

It would be better all around if you put the OEM DR muffler on your compressor and put the GSXR can on your DR. Best of both worlds. Despite your heresy talk here, at least you have given me an idea as to what I'm going to do with my old DR eom muffler I have wrapped in plastic up in the attic. :bounce:

Thanks. Maybe a bit extreme, but I like the compressor, works great, and fits my application. Because it’s mounted on my lift, vibration noise was really loud.

Took apart the compressor and brought the rotating assembly to a local machine shop that specializes in balancing. They will balance anything that spins.

The crank counter-weight was so out of whack that it would have cost a fortune to drill it out and insert Mallory metal. So they added a a chunk of metal to the pulley. Not ideal since the crank is on the opposite side of the pump from the pulley. It fixed the up/down vibration, and the side to side oscillation is minimal. It made a huge difference.

Here’s a vid of the before and after.
You can really see the vibration reduction in the power cord.
LOL, it reduced so much noise that now you can hear the noise from the motor (hum in the ‘after’ part of the vid)

Hugh difference, that willlet the bearings in both the motor and ccompressor live a lot longer. Another benifit is cracks forming around the welds on the mounting plate, I have seen many compressors tanks fail in that area.
