"rim saving" style impact socket

does anybody have a set, you know the thin wall styled or protective sleeved designed for rims? if so would you recommend it? or if you dont have a set and just want to recommend one thats fine to. im just looking into my options.

I have the extra-long ones. They're very good and they do protect the wheels very well. Only problem is if removing wheels from a car that runs wheel bolts, if the socket/bolt is still spinnng when you pull the socket back, the end of the bolt can still mark the wheel. Otherwise, no problems and i would reccomend them.

Which sizes do you need ??? Hazet makes them in 15,17,19,21 and 22mm for example.

Do you have AMG wheels ?? :) They also make this extra long 17mm socket for AMG rims.

Monte -- do the Hazet's have a plastic insert to protect the nut as well? It doesn't look like they do, whereas the Genius and Griot's sets do.

These Hazet's are impact sockets. And super high quality.

Others I have seen like the cheap Griot's are aluminum.

Like MrMark already mentioned there is a plastic thing inside to protect the lug nut (see pic) Also the sleeve is longer than the socket to protect the "face" of the wheel (around the hole where the lug nut sits)

The genius cover the face of the socket with plastic as well, it doesn't stick out, but rather covers the face with plastic, so the only metal is the inside walls and is does have the insert in the middle and comes with spares of each. Also they are made out of CHROME MOLYBDENUM STEEL.

They look interesting for where you didn't want to splurge on the Hazet or Apex. They look black in the little pic but I can't tell for sure. Are they impact rated? Is chromoly steel the stuff that impacts are made out of? Can you say where the Genius are made? I will buy some Taiwan stuff, not not China on a socket. I've had them shatter and almost injure me.

Taiwan and yes they are impact rated, I use them with my genius torque sticks, genus makes some of the best stuff for the price, and I have never had a problem with mine at all. They are a darker gray like not painted on like some of the HF sockets I have.

I have one that I brought from NAPA for about $8. I have used it for about 2 years, changing the tires on my car for races 1-2 times a month. I have not had a single issue, and my rims still look like new. I know that they are hidden somewhere in the NAPA tools catalog so you may need to get the old guy that knows his stuff to find it for you. They do sell the set as well I believe.

Monte and MrMark -- thanks for the additional information! Those look like really useful items...plus, I'll admit I love using German tools on German cars :) I do still have some hesitation about using an impact, since it beats on the sides and corners of the nut more than manual removal. However, these would be good to have on hand for those especially stubborn nuts, or when I'm in a rush.

Elroy -- those Apex products are sweet! Do you (or anyone else) have even approximate pricing on them? I'm just curious.

MrMark -- I can't believe that the Griot's are aluminum and not impact rated...thanks for pointing that out!

German cars like German tools. No doubt about it. Every Mercedes owner should have some Hazet stuff around and some is essential to do the job. If I could get it at a decent price I would have nothing but Hazet! Well, Snap-on is pretty nice too.

Here's the Griots set I believe:

The reviews are bad. It sure looks like billet aluminum. Maybe it's some kind of colored chrome though.

At Chads, the 3 piece Hazet set is $83, but the single extra long 17mm is $124. Wow.

I just wrap blue masking tape around my impact wheel sockets and that works fine. A roll of blue masking tape is what $5?
