Nobody else was interested and I was willing to haul it away, so it was FREE!

I’m a hospital administrator, so it is going straight to the hospital kitchen.

It is US made. I thought about taking it home and using it, but what would I possibly do at home with a 200lbs, 20 quart mixer. The chef at the hospital promises to let me use it whenever I want. The guy at the surplus just called and asked if I wanted a proofing cabinet as well....So I guess I'm going home to get my pickup.

I was off yesterday so I went back to the large Restore that had all the new GearWrench stuff and found an entire display rack that I missed last week. And it was 20% off. Managed to dig up a 22 pc long pattern combo set with roll: 6-24mm, 27, 30, 32mm. A 14pc 6 point set with roll: 6-19. 13/16 - 1" ratcheting combos to extend the top end of my current set, and some hose pinch pliers. Just under $100 for all. I may give the larger 22 pc set to my son for his birthday. Maybe.



Today I hit the ReStore near my office at lunch and got the following for a buck each - Petersens, Plumb, etc.


I had just gotten in line to pay when I heard someone unloading more stuff at the tool section and went back just as the young lady set down this minty little utility cabinet. $5.

Time to post yesterday's haul! I spent $110 total.
Pic 1: The Goodyear airplane tire appears to be a solid tire for a taildragger. The wheel was made by Hayes Industry Incorporated in Jackson Michigan. What appears to be a 1937 date code is on the wheel! Tire appears to be unused.

Pic 2 and 3: Some more Craftsman for my collection. The Sears torch is one of the old Solidox ones and will probably just be a shelf piece. The 3 SAE combo wrenches are mid 1940s raised panels without a stamped V, one has a raised letter V. They are in nice shape!

Pic 4 and 5: One of my favorite finds of the day, a Craftsman Crown logo convertible hand truck / cart.

Pic 1 -5: Axes and hatchets. The best one is the Plumb Boy Scout hatchet. The Be Prepared logo and barely legible Genuine Hickory stamp on the original handle identify it as 1929-1934.
The True Temper Perfect Kelly Works single bit axe is a good piece too.
The plain Plumb hatchet has the red Permabond in place of a wedge so it is 1956 or later. All of these are going to a axe and hatchet collector I know. I only keep the Sears ones LOL.

Pic 2: Bunch of tape measures including a Western Auto Westcraft, Coleman #0 funnel in like new condition, a small hammer (jeweler's? ), some vintage hammer pliers, a vintage crate tool given away with Compliments of a local Shreveport store, a Ford Model A - B tool, a Barlow knife with a broken blade, a no name scraper tool and a wood handled driver multi-tool with a bunch of the original blades still in it.

I wanted this classic stacking cabinet with lift front glass doors, spotted this morning at my flea, soooo badly for my new 2019 'tools under glass' (rather than hidden in drawers) initiative, but I just couldn't do it at $300!

Yes! That is a truly rare find, bb! Unlike some other mfgrs, Vlchek never ventured very far from the automotive hand tools market. I have never found a Vlchek tool in the wild that wasn't automotive, and the only non-automotive tools in their 1936 and 1941 catalogs are these bricklayers' hammers! Do you mind posting a close-up or two of the hammer and the branding in the Vlchek thread, linked here?

Lugz, $300 for that bookcase isn't too bad. But your fleas are...different! It's sure in nice shape, if you're able to do some negotiating.

NICE find on that SOS F-E. I picked up an extinguisher last year which is still full of CCl4. It's not from one of the WW2 preferred manufacturers, though.

Lugz, that shelf is called a barrister bookcase. In my area you would have been paying full price at 300$. If you use the barrister term to search you could probably find one to suit your needs.

Fowl: so are you giving your FREE MIXER to your work or bringing it home? looks like a KEEPER TO ME if your kitchen is big enough cause I think you have have 4 boys to feed even though one is away at college.

ALL: I'm picking up a very old cement mixer that is maybe built better than the old vises i buy and it's sitting in the weeds currently. it's going to be heavy, but the inside bin isn't full of old cement that i could see. SO MY QUESTION is once i change out the motor and belt is there really anything more than just greasing it or am I missing something? i'm guessing it's close to 1950's vintage so it won't be light, but it is on wheels once I pull it out of the blackberries.

I had no idea, honestly, I just knew it was more than I was willing to spend. A dealer is the wrong kind of vendor for me. He had other furniture and glassware and other antiques. I need to run into one mixed up in a liquidator's haul in the back lot, someone who doesn't really know what he has, or knows it might be worth something more but he doesn't have the time to research it and he is willing to let it go cheaper because he needs to move it to make room for the next haul, and even at $100 he is making a profit. There are dozens of those guys at the fleas peak season. I will find one.

I have found five in the wild, a few Pyrenes and a couple Quick-Aids. All WWII age, WWII spec, and full of CTC. Easy money, and I always empty them for shipping. This was my first SOS Fire Guard, also full of CTC, also now emptied. But they are not common and tricky. I have seen way more than that, all looking tempting, but all not quite right.

Going back to Don's "incorrect" comment - I never mounted mine in the "right" place. Hated it there. I put mine where the decontaminator was supposed to go on the right fender. Period photos show it there on some jeeps in the ETO, despite the potential glint. As you know, if you're within LOS of someone seeing the glinting off your FE on a fender, it's too late anyway! And it looked really good there.

Lugz, if that barristers bookcase had a base (don’t see it in the photo) it would be priced about right for my area. But I’m with you: why pay a fair price, if you can get one for less? They do show up for less sometimes. And they don’t all mix and match well, so better to hold out for maybe five matching sections than just three. I’ve got a three-section, but significantly lesser-quality than the one you showed. My father kept paint in it. I refinished it when I was in high school and had to make two new dropdown doors for it. Probably should redo the refinish, because I could do it a lot better today.

OMG...my college senior’s swim meet was moved up and now CONFLICTS with a steam and gas swap meet Saturday, because of predicted weather. Arrggg! Can’t catch a break here.

Good to know. I kind of like them without a base as my plan would be to put them on top of a more conventional work bench or tool cabinet. Probably sacrilege as they deserve to be in a library or study or parlor etc on nice hardwood floors against a wall with wainscoting etc. But they will grace my tools just fine and vicey versey in my aesthetic universe!

'Zackly. My motto is: buy in uninformed markets, sell in informed markets. I admire the guys on American Pickers when they tell someone they're "a little light," but I rarely do that. Old folks, especially veterans, and that's it. I have no sympathy for house close-out guys and they don't expect any. It's all volume and pace for them, pace and volume, and I am glad to help them get rid of stuff at very favorable prices without an ounce of guilt.

This is what my flea market looked like this morning!

About a half dozen vendors and a bunch of regglers standing around talking about politics and the snow and this contraption!

It's an antique Buffalo Forge DP, probably a bench model, in my opinion, integrated on a floor stand base with a Sears & Roebuck DUNLAP 115v 60cycle motor, with a jerry-rigged screen around the gears.

The seller only wanted $50 for it, which is probably worth it for the motor alone, let alone the antique BF DP, and I was thinking about taking it just to separate the DP, but it would be an ornament and I'm not that into antique machinery.

Bob: better yet the seller cut most of them so only a few left to deal with. the hard part will be moving this heavy cement mixer down a small hill on wheels that probably haven't been lubed in 50 years. I'll keep you posted

Lug: In my travels and all the wood cabinets i've seen and bought I haven't seen those glass front library cabinets around here in years. we used to sell them at a friend's antique store almost like a lost leader item to get buyers for dining tables and huge sideboards into the store. even though $300 was a bit higher than you'd like I bet that it would cost 3 times that much here and maybe more.

the casting on the frame of the Buffalo might have my interest, but i'm a sucker for a well worn steel wheel and one of these days i'm going to find one of the vises that open and close with one.

ALL: hope you all have a great weekend. it's 50's and not even raining much hear, but i'm moving and don't have much time to chase great deals. that said i'm always looking and without snow and ice to deal with the journey to pick something up might be a bit safer.!!

Not a bit higher, Drives, but 3 to 4 x higher. I am a picker, not an easy mark!

On its value in the PNW, location is everything. In Brooklyn where all the hipsters are gaga for antiques now it would probably sell 3 x that much, too. (My daughter, who lives in Brooklyn Heights, told me the outdoor "flea market" in her area costs $3,300 for a vendor space with a table! That's not a flea market! That's a bunch of rich people pretending they're shopping at a "flea market" because it sounds charming and like something regular people do! HAHA)

Thats a great find! I found an x-acto set last year near the end. it had all kinda of little tools and blades and even a tiny draw knife all in a wooden box. but, no lid.

LUG: sorry if I sounded like you SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT cause not even what I meant. I never thought these were built very well when we were selling the 3-4 stacked units for $75-$100 for the units. there are much better ways to show off your collection and i'm sure you'll find something. i was just saying that these are rare to find in good shape maybe because they weren't that well built so they command good money now if you can even find one cause they are somewhat rare.

As far as some areas selling their stuff for more well that's just life. If I was selling my vise collection in one part of the country i'd maybe be able to buy a golf cart and if I was selling it in Europe i'd probably get enough for a Ferrari (probably a little exaggerated).

today I was digging in a warehouse picking out some cool wood scraps so I guess I'm a picker too and happy it's not snowing here. tomorrow i'll probably be in the rain pulling an old cement mixer out of the weeds, but I do like nice stuff too. I'd love to own one of these CRIBBAGE BOARDS that doubles as a lazy susan and I guess i'll just have to make one cause at $600 each I won't pay that.

yep! that tag that shows is likely Globe Wernicke - It is missing the bottom section/feet but does have the top. I think $300 is high for that one. But definitely use barrister bookcase as a search term and keep an eye out.

The only problem that I have with the barrister is that there does not seem to be a good way to install lights without drilling (which I cannot bring myself to do). there is also limited room for LEDs when the glass front is open.

Drives I can't say I'm a cribbage player though I have played just not in decades. I love that board/lazy susan. Was there a company making them in this style or do you think that's shop made?

The fingerboard corners and the vintage-looking decal (it was logo-ized into more of an X in the 70's and is even more stylized today) prompted me to do some research, bb, and I learned a lot of interesting things about the company and found some old ads. I will post a thread on the Vintage Board later and come back here and post the link so you can easily find it.
