Looks suspicious to me. I’ve never seen labeling even close to that on Craftsman vises. Has anybody else?

While at least I can not say one way or another if the labeling is a legitimate Craftsman one, to me it is definitely very funky looking and different than all the other Craftsman vise labels that I have seen!

This 8" vise is even lighter than the lightest 8" Columbian by about 50-60#! And honestly the overall size of it does not look that big either (that is for an 8" vise). In the second photo, the vise next to it is just a 5161 Craftsman which is only a 3.5" weighing 36# and does not look like this 8"er is completely overwhelming the little guy the way a big 8" vise should.

In contrast here is a Parker 978 (8" 298#) vs a Parker 229 (3 1/4" 35#) which is similar in size and weight to 5161 Craftsman. Now that to me is impressive!

Dave, if you think that ***** I saw a barely used Morgan 80 and a pristine Athol that had at least 5" jaws sell for $150 for the pair. The guy that bought them was literally seconds ahead of me. Here's a shot of the Morgan.

Back in 80s when Japan had become the King of manufacturing and electronics, my father was always amused by this fact and used to reminisce about old days when Japanese products were so inferior that sometimes they refused to state the COO on the product or even put misleading labels on the products.

In fact once he told me that, when traveling in mainland Europe at that time, he had seen crappy and very cheap watches that were presumably made in Japan but were labeled as Made In Angland. I guess they were being clever by while not explicitly stating Made in England but possibly trying to fool the none English speaking world.

Can anyone identify this vise? This is the only picture I have.

I was able to get this vise. It was listed at an estate sale that's why I had to wait until the day of the sale. I believe it's made by Parker but private branded to Sargent Co. I found it in a few catalogs as far back as 1871.

The castings have a #2 on each side. I think I will leave this one as-is. It looks to be the original japanned finish.

Picked this up a few months ago. Got to get my **** in gear and get it looking better.

If you want to get started on it I'll share my method for painted and not terribly rusted vises.

Get a gallon of Simple Green and a 13 gallon tote. Pour the SG in and 3 or 4 gallons of water. Disassemble the vise and drop the parts in. I often leave a vise in there for several days to a week. When you pull it out the paint should be literally falling off. A little wire wheeling and you've got a bare Wilton ready for primer and paint.

Chris is right. That technique removes paint without affecting fine surface detail.
After you get the paint off, if there is still rust, repeat the soaking in Evaporust overnight. That will turn the rust into an easily washed off black residue. I rinse parts off by brushing with a brass wire brush under running water.

RB, welcome to the new normal.---I get a dozen or more RoBo calls a day from lazy ***-HATS from near and abroad trying to get a cyber toe in the door to clean me out and then move on to the next victim.---Rather than get an honest job, they rather clean some senior citizen out, leaving them penniless and out in the cold.---They would say, "but this is my job and I honestly love it".


Incidentally, I have an answering service, (caller identification), so I know who just wants money and never answer the ***-HATS.

va...... I'm not entirely sure why but your use of the term ***-HAT not only made me smile but might just be the highlight of my day.

I am easily entertained though. Probably because I'm having vise withdrawals. Other than that catastrophe of a Prentiss 22, I realized last night I haven't found and purchased a vise since October 26th. That's almost 90 days! To say it's been a little dry around here is a bit of an understatement.

I wouldn't really say passed, more like drug my feet long enough until I noticed the seller marked the listing as sold. Indeed the missing spring and mount and the fact that it really wasn't in great shape weighed on me. It would have been an hour trip each way for me too and while I eventually would like to own one, I'd also like for it to be complete and in decent shape.

Probably a wise decision the price seemed good but the missing parts tend to be a problem. I’ll keep my eyes open for one in these parts and let you know if a deal pops up.

Truth be told, I'm being a bit dramatic. I've got an awesome herd of vises in my garage with lots of refurb work to be done yet. I'm very thankful for the opportunities that have come my way to be able to learn about, collect and restore them. I'm also thankful for our little GJ vise community here who provide daily entertainment, conversation and camaraderie regarding this hobby / addiction that we all enjoy so much!

As far as anvil is concerned, I am in exactly the same boat as you and I suspect so are many others here too.

The freaking anvils have become the real unicorn and if by a miracle you find one, it will cost you your left arm, right leg, left eye, right ear and one testicle (well at least the silver lining is that apparently the sellers do not care which testicle)

My newest acquisition: A 3-½" Columbian that I picked up as part of a lot on Craigslist. Also got a bench grinder and pipe vise. I was after the grinder and the price for all three was good, so I figured I could clean this up and re-sell it to recoup some of the costs of the lot.

After cleaning and painting:

The jaw faces are pretty beat up and the hole that receives the bolt through the base is off-center, so it swivels kind of wonky, but maybe someone on CL needs a small vise for $20.

I use the Morgan all the time, so it definitely doesn't look like a bench queen. I got it from my dad (it was sitting under his bench for the longest time) and restored it when I moved into this home and built a proper bench.

My dad just picked up this nice Hollands 52H. Real good condition. 3 1/2” jaw, just under 3 3/4” opening. Missing 2 of 3 pipe jaws. I’ll post the weight in a bit.

The vise is in quit remarkable shape for its age I would put a date range of around 1905 according to several ads I found. I am really intrigued with the way swivel base works using a cam locking lever and a simple square head bolt in the base of the vise. The vise has a nice action with the screw and the swivel base. I’m quit surprised there are not many more of this model out there as it was only $1.25 in 1900. At the same time the enclosed screw version of this vise ie the solid jaw swivel base jewelers vise was $3.50 in comparison.

As for the missing pipe jaws, well unfortunately more often than not these fellows are AWOL ( if you believe the pipe jaws are lazy and are deserters) or may be I should say MIA (if you believe it is the owner who lost them)
