OMG...my college senior’s swim meet was moved up and now CONFLICTS with a steam and gas swap meet Saturday, because of predicted weather. Arrggg! Can’t catch a break here.

HA-HA on me! The swim meet was cancelled. But Mrs LS pointed out that the AUTOmania show was happening right here at the Allentown Agriplex - much closer than Jacktown. So I still had a conflict. I chose convenience over adventure today. $10 admission, looked the whole cars, partial cars, and car parts over, then spent $16 on $1 items. While I was digging through a pile of junk, elbow to elbow with a few other bargain-hunters, two young fellas stopped to observe. Finally, one says, “I don’t understand why guys waste their time pawing through useless, broken tools.”
Hmmm...me neither, but it didn’t stop me.
I deluded myself into believing a PEXTO 40-7 was the UTICA 1950-7 with depressed diamonds I’ve been hunting. Picked a flying-V Vlchek/CeeTee pliers after sorting through a half dozen gull-winged ones with no flying-Vs. An interesting Jaguar (Garrington) wrench, and since I didn’t have a magnet handy, a copper-plated steel wrench I thought might be Br alloy.
But the BIG STORY is: I have discovered that Harold is the OEM for the Sears “Happy-Time” children’s slipjoints. The oft-maligned “fake gull-wing” slipjoints are THE SAME as the Sears “Happy-Time” children’s slipjoints. Now, somebody wanted these, right?

Some other close-ups. I saw five butterfly Cman 1/4dr rats today. One was a transplanted selector onto a younger body. The others were $9 each, and I told myself I’d stop back and buy one, but I didn’t. Every one of them had skippy action. I think it’s the ball bearing.

Stopped by the pawn shop after breakfast and found a (another) chipping hammer and a mag base Craftsman mirror that I thought was brilliant (easily entertained). I don't know if the mirror was an original Cman in that configuration or if it is a hack of some sort. Either way it is in a new home.

BB We will look forward to hearing whether you guys stuck it out to get to your numbers and if you did whether there was anything of note left for you to buy! Good luck!!!

Haha. That brought back some memories. The early morning humor outside the estate sales! The crowd would see a guy walking up with a bag or a cardboard tray and somebody would jokingly yell “No guys with canvas bags allowed” or “No boxes allowed”. Lol. That’s one thing I never did was bring my own bag or box. Maybe once when they said to. I always look for a box or container there if needed.

Now the flea markets, I never used to, but the larger ones I always bring a bag, and have plastic bags on hand at the normal flea.

No snow on the ground. That'll change soon [emoji1]

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrenches 3061, 3070,

You got that right! Day 2 of this sale will probably happen next week.

I was a bit embarrassed at getting such high numbers because I thought getting there 1.5 hours early might get us in on the first call. Oh foolish picker. I heard later while we were waiting to get in that some folks were there at midnight to get first dibs.

There was all kinds of cool stuff at this sale--over 800 pics on the sale page. The guy was a serious collector of all kinds of things: toys, calipers, thermometers, buttons, hub caps, canes, comics, records, CDs, tools, car parts--you name it. That coupled with the sparcity of sales today in the region apparently brought the entire region to this small rundown house.

Once I pulled our numbers, we went for breakfast in the local town and drove 10 minutes to the only other sale nearby. This was a much more upscale house, and SWMBO was tickled to find a few tasteful clothes in great condition at bargain prices. I found a few items too, and we combined our picks for checkout.

No pics of her clothing finds, but SWMBO found these two purple glasses (her favorite color) at the second sale ($5) and the ceramic dish at the first sale ($5). The latter will become a cat food dish.

cd6af719af530bf5b4e21df403d2e7aa.jpg

The first sale was thin on tools but I found a few items worth taking.

3/4 bottle of de-icer - a definite consumable this time of year
Cheap pair of Taiwanese shears
Craftsman 41581 flat blade driver
Billings & Spencer Model B bicycle wrench
Two Klein flat blade drivers
Two aluminum 66704 c-clamps, probably Craftsman
A beautiful crowntop Craftsman 1719 metal protractor saw guide

Got everything above for $12.

Back at the sale, we joked around with fellow pickers until our numbers got called. I made a beeline for the basement looking for a specific piece I wanted for the 2019 Picker of the Year trophy, but alas it was gone, as were a lot of the other stuff I saw in the pictures. We sifted through the dregs and found the following:

Two Snap-on Torq-o-meter torque wrenches, a TQ-175 and a TE250-L, both for $30 each
Everything else was another $5:
Sears & Roebuck cast iron metal ladle, with a dollop of lead still in the cup
Mechanical measuring wheel--turned out to be faulty. I'll see if it is repairable.
Stanley 25" tape measure
Maasdan Red Devil Pwor-Pull wire stretcher

Safety Midget chain lever binder
No-name coil spring compressor

fe49c8038f8c1207cc6ef4dbaa7ae313.jpg

Cool looking vintage ship clock for $15. We got it for our nautical daughter and her boyfriend, but discovered the clock didn't work once we got it home. I may try to fix the movement.

ac9a9cabcdc30c00cadf5537d72d0335.jpg

This gigantic auto headlight pod. Absolutely no markings on the teardrop. A guy at the sale said he thought it was from a Ford. For $25, it followed me home. Anyone have any guesses as to manufacturer?

:+1:

Where is Display Case Duddly?

I wanted this classic stacking cabinet with lift front glass doors, spotted this morning at my flea, soooo badly for my new 2019 'tools under glass' (rather than hidden in drawers) initiative, but I just couldn't do it at $300!

attachment.php

Well, guess what I saw in the pics at this sale?!?

I wouldn't have looked twice at these barrister bookshelves if it weren't for your post. By the time I got inside, the original finish one was marked "sold" for a stickered price of $100. The painted one was still there when we left.

All in all, a fun morning with my favorite gal, who remarked how much she enjoyed going out together to pick and hunt bargains. I'm happy!

Some nice scores this weekend!

BlueBomber - that first barrister bookcase looks like it would clean up nice. Couldn't see what they were asking.

My Saturday fizzled - Went to an estate sale that looked promising but nothing came of it. Stopped by the Restore on the way home and picked up a 1937 CocaCola tray for $1 - not a reproduction, so I might be able to trade it. But I used to collect Coke stuff at one point so it may stay with me.

Well... two more days to the weekend. Here's hoping.

managed to stop at the Habitat ReStore before the snowstorm.
Found some NOS Schlage locks and some Bell System screwdrivers, also another Upson 4 in 1. I think I have 3 now.

Hit up one estate sale today - I figured foul weather would keep the attendance down, but no. I was nearly half an hour early and got number 103! Finally got in 45 minutes after opening. I was most interested in clamps, but felt better about being late when I saw 6"-8" handscrews going out the door at $10 each. Pipe clamps ditto. Departing buyers said there was no dickering allowed.

All I got was the full WD-40 (12oz net; I weighed it at 16oz) and two little 3" clamps. I almost passed on them, but saw they were American made. $5 bought the lot. Felix approves.

I'm tempted to go back tomorrow - half price day - and see whether the set of 13 Craftsman 1/2" drive deep sockets is still there. Gotta keep telling myself they're not a bargain at $15 plus a 30 mile round trip.

Got this awesome drawer container for free from a local gem store changing over to a new product. Manager says she has 5 more I can have I told her I’d like to have just one more.

It’s 20”x16” for scale.

ALL: my cement mixer deal got put off a week or maybe 2 weeks cause seller got the flu, but I should own it soon enough and hope it won't be yard art.

I've been looking for a lightweight wheelchair for my 86 year old dad so my 86 year old mom wouldn't have to carry his heavy wheelchair up and down 13 stairs every time they leave the house. since my dad should be walking anytime soon as soon as he exercises his new hip and knee replacement i didn't want to buy a new one of these so I found one that a gal wasn't using anymore that I think will really help my mom and maybe just not comfortable enough to give my dad some motivation to get off his chair and workout on the recumbent bike I put in front of his TV.

Not a garage sale find, but a swap with my brother - I gave him a couple Vise-Grips I had extras of, and he gave me these three machine tool wrenches. A 7/8" Armstrong, a 13/16" with a 'T' logo, and a little 7/16" with an unrecognizable logo. The Armstrong and the little one appear to be unused, the T logo one is used but in good condition.

If anyone recognizes the logos on the two wrenches let me know what brand they are.

If you mean the arm and hammer, that's Armstrong. It's a lot older than the other one with the name on the shank.

The oft-maligned “fake gull-wing” slipjoints are THE SAME as the Sears “Happy-Time” children’s slipjoints. Now, somebody wanted these, right?
HeelSpur didn't say he wanted them, but I noticed that he needed them. He found a "Happi-Time" cabinet with several tools inside last year, but it was missing the pliers. It made me feel worse that I left the pair I saw at a flea market behind.

In reference to those seeking barrister book shelves and to answer the question on lighting them. Here's a couple shots of mine.

First I picked this set up at a local antique shop. Its 4 case high and has the bottom leg section. Its shown without the top section.

Notice once you start to open the glass front cover and slide it back, the metal scissor guides collapse back into the case. There is very little clearance between them, the top of the glass front section and the top of the case making lighting them difficult.

Probably could use vey thin strips of LED lighting and then drilling small holes for the cords to pass thru each individual case's far upper corners then splice them together behind the cabinet to form one main cord.

That's likely how I'm going to do mine eventually.

So, my out of town family left early this AM, so I still had time to hit a couple of sales. Three to be exact. The first looked the best from yesterday pics, but it was half price day and it was pretty picked over. I did get the following though:

Most of a set of Craftsman -V- deeps (which I had to search high and low for) Magna driver and an APEX bit driver, Diamalloy adjustable, misc. sockets (mostly BE and more -v- Craftsman, SK, Bonney, Plomb, and Williams) Plomb and Craftsman spinners, Plomb DBE, and Artisan slip joints. Here is a better pic of the two Plomb USN sockets and Craftsman spinner

I also picked up this, a vintage Pontiac trunk piece.

It was $15 for everything.
Next sale was way overpriced but I did pick this up. I don't think that I will ever need a set screw again. $15

The third sale was advertised for a few weeks locally as an original homestead along with new buildings, and boy was there a lot to see. They were half price on the second day to get rid of stuff there was so much. But, it was mostly stuff I wasn't interested in. But I picked up the following:

SK socket box with misc. vintage sockets (Williams, Plomb and BE Craftsman), Heller 14" Masterwrench, two General USA V-block sets (unused), Plomb obstruction wrench, Plomb spinner, early Vice-Grip, RP SK-Lectrolite wrench and a Diamond Caulk adjustable. $28.

Then I went to get cheap Chinese food. A good day overall.

Glad to see you guys are knocking them dead!

I had to take my oldest daughter back up to Humboldt after winter break today (LONG day!)

I didn't miss anything here again (still poor weather)

I DID manufacture some finds by stopping at a "junk Shop"

I picked up: A Coleman replacement Globe for the replacement "stock" a 60" roll of nylon tent material, - its marked 10 yards, and I have my fingers crossed that is accurate; and a roughed out Mauser Stock. I've always wanted to build a decent Mauser sporter, and there are plenty of them already cut up that NEED a decent stock, and not shown, a partial can of Coleman fuel.

Fun little autojumble today, even at 1°C!

Picked up:
> Paramo Plane for £4 with an easy adjust blade.
> 30m of stockinette. £4
> NOS rivet punch £1
> Adjust-a-box wrench, USA made. £0.50
> Eclipse hacksaw handle £2
> Snap-On posidrive screw driver for £0.50

The Snap-on and eclipse have both cleaned up remarkably well with just a bit of oily rag!

Outlaw - figured walnut? Looks good.
Barristers Brigade - here’s the cheaply made one I inherited, sans doors and laden with my kids’ exiled childhood books. I think lighting these things is inherently problematic because of their sectional nature. Each section should have its own power, favoring Outlaw’s battery suggestion. But that makes turning them on and off quite an effort.
I think the best position for a lamp would be on the back of the door, along the top rail, rather than above the door. That way, the illumination is always cast on the objects inside, but the lamp is accessibly serviceable while the door is open.

Well, drat. Went back to the same sale as yesterday, late by almost an hour, drew no. 117! The crafty sockets were gone just this morning, so at least they only got $15 for them, not the $30 they were asking yesterday. Oh, well, I tell myself, not a screamin' deal.
I prowled around a bit and came up with a decent handful. I lucked out on the vise- someone had tried and failed to unscrew it from the workbench - even tried to drill out one of the screws. I got two of them out with a little awl-and chisel paint removal plus a grunt or two. Third required chiseling away the wood from around it. Thank goodness it was near enough to the edge of the bench for that to work.
A handful of recent Indestros and the cute little Wizard and Billings wrenches and a Craftsman satchel to put it all in. I also grabbed a 3/4 full gallon of paint thinner and a half full gallon of what was supposed to be more, but is in fact a white goo that looks like library paste, though it smells like thinner. WTF??
It's Klean-Strip KS Pro.
The total tab was a buck less than the original price of the vise.

Mrs No_Garage and myself hit 2 Sales yesterday. I bought 2 Taylor brand woodworking clamps and a Lucent Technologies canvas covered "miscellaneous notebook".

The Lucent notebooks will be added to the 2 AT&T Bell Labs notebooks I already have. I'm really looking for a Bell Telephone Bell Laboratories notebook to add to the collection. I have a thing for notebooks/journals and my Dad worked for Bell Labs so there is a connection there.

It's bulk pickup here tomorrow in town so I made the rounds scavenging and hit pay dirt with a Craftsman Crown Top carry box (no model number found) and a General Mfg arbor with 2 grinding wheels.

The Craftsman box is in good shape so I wiped it down and added it to the stack of carry boxes I have built up. The land of misfit toolboxes?

Cheers

Jim

Fun little autojumble today, even at 1°C!

Picked up:
> Paramo Plane for £4 with an easy adjust blade.
> 30m of stockinette. £4
> NOS rivet punch £1
> Adjust-a-box wrench, USA made. £0.50
> Eclipse hacksaw handle £2
> Snap-On posidrive screw driver for £0.50

The Snap-on and eclipse have both cleaned up remarkably well with just a bit of oily rag!

So, out and about doing errends today, and I see a sign for a sale. Well, its some kind of whole house thing, but pretty beat up stuff. There was a nice waterfall bedroom set, but they wanted dealer prices for it. But I did manage to pick up the following:

Weaver scope in the box and a Griswald #9, whatever that is. I kinda think cast iron is gross, but the wife loves it, so it will get cleaned up and saved for her birthday.

Jim- I know what you mean about the misc carry boxes. I have a bunch I like but that don’t get used. I did this with some of my craftsman boxes above my garage door. Out of the way but still can be seen and can still be reached if needed !

Stained the cross strips to make it look old.
