A buddy that is all thumbs with respect to mechanical things brought me a set of wind chimes to fix for him.
I started to research online for dimensions and was astonished at the science behind them.

Re: Science behind wiind chimes

Just built one for my dad for Christmas. I wasn’t about to pay $200 dollars for something I could build myself and get two for the price of one. If you haven’t seen the website leehite.org it is a wealth of information. He has several videos on YouTube as well and after I commented on one with a question he responded with a answer pretty quick.

Nice site, thanks for the information. Now I need to make chimes. Looks like a good summer project with the grandkids.

Grab a Steel/Alum pipe and go about 22.4% inward and whack away w/ anything.
Guaranteed to piss someone off.

I resemble that remark. Anytime I'm around those annoying things, I'm looking for a way to make them stop.

Yeah, I know...get off my lawn.

That's very easy to do these days: piss someone off.

So easy it is not worth the trouble anymore.

I've got an older Oxygen cylinder that I thought about turning into a wind chime.

I tried this with an aluminum cylinder I found. It sounded terrible so it went to the scrap yard. I should have used it as an air tank for my CJ.

I hung up a transmission aluminum bellhousing and gave it a whack......

Guess that's why it's called a bellhousing :)

Re: Science behind wiind chimes

One of my neighbors at my place in NM whose house is 600' away decided to rent out their guest house. The renters proceeded to hang up at least 10 homemade wind chimes. Even in a slight breeze it sounded like a 1,000 elves beating steel pipes together. It made it so we could never sleep with our windows open. With no A/C in the summer it was a choice of the lesser of two evils.

When the renters moved, my neighbors said they were, "sorry to see them go". I told them I would have paid them to leave.

Leave the shoulder and neck on or it will not ring, at least that was my experience.

All the ones I've seen (which all rang beautifully), were steel, with a ring welded to the neck, and the bottom torched off.

Re: Science behind wiind chimes

We had one a few years ago. Sun and weather got to the string and broke it. I figured no problem I'll fix it. Found out real fast that they are strung and tied in a special way. No joy.

So I figured WTF I'll start over and build a bigger better one. Started researching and wow! Who would have thought that so much could have been put into such a simple noise maker.

The broken one is still hanging in my shop. Behind the entry door. Quietly. Probably never to be heard from again.

When it comes to wind chimes, the material they are made of makes a difference. Hard aluminum is great, hard brass is great, and steel cylinders are great.... But size the chimes to what is pleasing to the ear and not irritating.

I hate those things. Nothing like sitting down to relax and maybe have a beverage, and someones damn 'chimes' are banging away in the breeze.
