Here’s my first vintage grinder: a Black and Decker 1hp bench grinder with stand. Does anyone have a good source for replacement bearings? These are good but not quite as silent as I’d prefer. Thanks!

I bought this gigantic grinder of offer up for $50 with a stand that I'm using on a 3 phase 1.5 hp baldor. This grinder is bigger than the baldor is a 120v, looks like a 12in the info tag is missing. It has oiler cups so its old On the shafts. If anybody knows any info would be greatly appreciated

That looks like a Kingston-Conley grinder, which unfortunately doesn't narrow it down; they made grinders for virtually everyone during the '40's and '50's ( I have a 10" that is marked Hoover, because they owned K-C for many years).

Anyone recognise this bench grinder? I found it at an estate sale. It looks to be 6" wheel size. Runs great. Seemed worth the $10. My neighbor appreciated getting it.

Edit - the eye shield clamp does look like Baldor.

If you measure the OD, ID, and width (mm) you can find replacements on Amazon, at Graingers, or Bearing Services http://www.bearingservice.com/

Yup, looks like a Baldor 612, badged as who-knows-what; the tool rest and tool rest holder are Baldor 612 for sure. The older Rockwell 6” grinders were often Baldors. Great get for $10!

Take that stupid wire wheel off (shouldn’t use wire wheels with guards on), and get that tool rest back over to the right where it belongs!

Thanks for the confirmation. I just talked to my neighbor and he was going to order new tool tests and grinding wheels for it. It is nice to see it go somewhere it will be appreciated.

My dad picked up this old Dunlap 6" grinder for me. It came with a cool cast iron stand. I forgot to take pictures of the stand. $50 for the combo. I thought the stand alone was worth that. It should look great in the new shop when I get it cleaned up.

It seems to run fine. I plan on getting a new stone/brush before any use. Did these grinders ever have side guards? If so they are missing along with the eye shields. Does anyone know of a place to purchase parts for these?

I'm not sure if a 1987 bench grinder is vintage but it is certainly the newest bench grinder I own.

Assuming I get all of my project grinders running this would be my weakest grinder too but for $25 I couldn't say no.

Wissota 6" grinder. 1/4 horsepower. 3450 rpm. It will be put into use right away.

Here's a 1940s Cincinnati 12" grinder I picked up last Summer. I'm not quite finished with the rebuild. The shroud that surrounds the left hand wheel for wet grinding is packed with a rust/metal grinding concoction.

Wow, what a find and what a beauty! What are you going to do with it? It is always a wonder seeing NIB [anythings]. Do you use it? Preserve it? Sell it? Egad I don’t know! Of course it would be awesome to use.

Maybe set it up as a dedicated sharpening station. That way you get to see it and use it, but its single (and light) purpose would help keep it pristine. Or put a cut off wheel on one side and a very fine touch-up stone on the right. Or a very fine SilCar on one and a very fine AlOx on the other . . . Fine grinding for different materials.

The last thing I would do is put on a 36 and use it for hogging off material and slag!

Nice get!

I have a Wissota like that branded "Blue Point" and they are indeed fantastic grinders. Rare to find a 3/4" arbor, and those massive flanges, on an 8-inch grinder. Mine came w/o guards so it is now a buffer--just wish it was a bit heavier to use on a bench without having to clamp it or bolt it down.

You find the absolute best deals!

Scored this Baldor 662E at an auction last week for $25.
This thing is incredibly heavy!

Picked at a sale weeks back. Like maybe 2-3 tiny specs of chrome or nickle plating left on the cover. Runs quite and smooth. Price ok 4 me when other bidders involved. Is that a build date on the rear tag? Looks 2b original cord but needs a shrinktube fix. I'll tig up a nice stainless quench tray 4 it easy-peasy. thanks 4 any help.

Picked this guy up last week. I've removed the cracked/partially-missing side guards and redone the "electrocution special" wiring to switch and power cord. This thing must weigh 30+ lbs.

I'm planning to use it for buffing/wire wheel work, but the 1/2"-24 left hand threaded nut is missing. I can find taps easier than replacement nuts, so I might have to make one...

Any ideas how old this is? I'm guessing 1940s-1950s based on cast iron construction and cloth-insulated internal wiring.

Here are some pics of a similar/same model.

Notice the lights in the upper wheel 'houses'. The red quench/cooling tray is plastic and often MIA.

Just finished this restomod on a Kingston Conley/Bluepoint badged 7",single phase, 1/2 h/p grinder. I already have a good grinder, and this thing was missing the original guards and tool rests. So I made a buffer/3M scotch brite version.

I replaced the cord and rewired everything. The capacitor works but I will be replacing it. The bearings work but could be replaced. My problem is that they are not available. The size is 17mm(ID)/45mm(OD)/12mm. Is it possible to use a readily available 17mmx40mmx12mm and some kind of sleeve that is 40mmx45mmx12mm? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just picked up this Craftsman 115.6842. It's a rescue that I hope to find a forever home for. I believe it'a a Packard. Freaking 71 Lbs. of grinder. Runs very nice.
Would be interested in finding out it's age.

Looks like the one in the 1944-1945 Craftsman Power Tools (Pages from the Big Sears Catalog).

Here's mine, they both work fine, the Milwaukee doesn't get used nearly as often as the Rockwell. I don't know the dates on either but I think the Milwaukee is easily 40+ years old.

Here's mine. I think it quallifies as vintage. Baldor 8100W. The best I could tell is maybe from the 70's? If I am wrong please let me know. :headscrat Another poster on GJ said the horizontal switch type is older than the vertical. This one has bayonet style bulbs instead of the screw in style. The eye shields don't sport the baldor logo on this one either. I gave it a touch up with paint, new wheels, and some wiring. It runs as smooth as glass!

Hi everyone!

Newbie here! Just wondering if I could get some input on restoring my Grandfather's/Dad's old grinder. It would be nice to have a second grinder dedicated for wire wheels.

The switch says that this is a 20 amp, 240 volt machine. I think, typically, that is what is used in Europe, right? The kicker is, my dad used the grinder here in the U.S.

I am planning to replace the capacitor, bearings, and maybe the switch. I would like to restore it for the experience and because it is was used by family. But I am not married to the idea!

I know there are grinders out there of similar quality that would cost as much or less than restoring this one. Chicago Industrial is no Milwaukee! but it may be of better quality than a new HF.

Is this thing going to cause more problems than it is worth?

Thank you for your input!

cloyd
