Rusty:
You have a very nice collection there. Hopefully your new place will have a suitable place to store and display those beauties.

If you’re short on space for one or two of those just let us know and we can “help you out”

So I’m sitting at work and somebody puts this Prentiss 513 on the board for twenty bucks. Well needless to say I got on the road and picked it up in a hurry. The seller lived near one of my favorite antique malls so I popped in to check it out. This is my first pipe vise but for $18.50 how could I go wrong. I’m not really interested in pipe vises but I know Prentiss made a few so I always take a closer look when I see them. The vise is in fairly good condition and the graffiti style lettering is definitely a plus.b08538c1cbfd87bbf98b87624befefb3.jpgef234602976115fcee40ad9d910827c4.jpgfb88a49bf95dc9fbc60dfc13d97e359d.jpg

Thank you for the kind words everyone.

Smitty nice find on that no 513 hard to beat for a 20 spot.

my main goal for displaying the vises is to make my own custom cabinet of some sort with glass inserted doors.

Nice score! Are the jaws 3 1/2 inches wide?

Here is its little brother...a 512. It has 3 inch wide jaws. I paid more than $20 and it was years ago shortly after joining GJ. I cleaned and repainted it as my very first vise rehab.

I spent the better part of the morning waiting for a like new Wilton C3 to come up to the plate. When it finally did it went for $750 plus 25%. These were my rebound vises that soothed my spirit.

Thanks, but I don’t understand how that pic was on Pinterest since I just shot it 5 minutes before I posted it here. I never post on Pinterest. Do pics on GJ migrate to Pinterest?

$937 does sound like a lot to pay for a C3 but then again a brand new one costs two grand plus sales tax and maybe shipping too.

My user is a C1 (purchased in excellent slightly used condition with brand new jaws for $300) and I think it’s plenty big enough for everything I expect it to do.

Finished up the light duty stand today for my Jolly Green Giant. Used a flywheel out of a big truck for the base. threw some pea green on the stand also.

Amazingly similiar photos...I can see why there was some mistaken identity.

If I'm not mistaken that is the same Prentiss 23 that's been discussed on here several times. I think he's had that listed down in GA for quite some time but I could be wrong. There's no price listed in the CL ad and the seller states "do your homework before calling me" which I'm sure loosely translates to around $1000.

Yep, that's the one. Guy sounds like a jerk with a crazy high price, I haven't even bothered to call.

Picked up a Yost 104 from eBay for $100. ($70 for the vise and $30 shipping). This one is gonna get stripped down then painted Virginia Tech maroon and orange. My boss just built a new shop and is a huge Tech fan, so I'm gonna give this one to him.

These are the eBay photos.

$70 for an eBay deal is pretty good! Should make your boss happy and a happy boss is always a good thing!

The vise was incorrectly labeled a Reed in the title of the eBay ad, but correctly listed a Yost in the description. Probably why it didn't have much action.

Also this pic looks weird (cracked) under the dynamic jaw, but it's just paint chipping a little bit.

My boss will definitely be happy

How are you keeping your vises warm on an evening such as this?

The vises are now frozen and stuck solidly to my *** and at the rate the temperature keeps dropping, they might be there permanently for rest of my life :bounce:

Right now it is -13 F with windchill of -35 F and temperatures keep dropping and in fact tomorrow will be colder than today. I have been working from home remotely for the whole week. As luck would have it I have a new Wilton bullet vise and an old tool box full of old tools that I have not even seen yet waiting for me in my office at work (60 miles away). And which I am very anxious to see. I am hopping to go to work on Friday. Once I get my hands on the stuff I will post the story behind it and the bullets particulars.

Now since you asked, here is the weather report. We first got slammed with 10” of snow on Monday. On Tuesday it kept getting colder and colder but it continued to snow as well (which is rather odd as usually snow and clouds moderate the temperature somewhat). We had more snow today. And everyday the freaking snow plow keeps shoving compacted snow 2 feet high and 4-5 feet deep in to my driveway. If you do not clear this snow it freezes and becomes like concrete! I keep going out at these crazy temperatures and blowing and shoveling the driveway (50’ long and 24’ wide) and specially the compacted **** at the end of driveway. If the freaking snow plow driver keeps this up, he is going to get hit with a good size vise on the head :lol_hitti

Can you please once again remind what the fxxx was the positive message you had for me the other day ? :headscrat :lol_hitti

Oh yea.---No snakes, no mosquitoes.---Glass half full.

You live in the Land of a 10000 Lakes, so I'm assuming it's the Land of a 10 Trillion Mosquitoes.

Hang in there Gman, the Vortex will peter out eventually.

I knew it was bad when I saw them lighting the railroad tracks on fire in Chicago. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours through this difficult time.
Edit
If you do end up throwing a vise at the snowplow driver try and use a Chinese beater.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

One of the most repeated phrases in Old Testament is “it came to pass”. This shall pass too.

As for the Chinese vise, I swear after I posted my reply to you I thought may be I should have said a Chinese vise. Rest assured my friend, I would never abuse an American vise this way or any other way. But Chinese vises like toilet paper are disposable :bounce:

Not that many self respecting snakes live in such a northerly climate! And the ones that do live here such as Garter snake, eastern Milk snake, Fox snake, etc are harmless. We do have a type of rattlesnake called Estern Massasauga rattlesnake which is mildly poisonous and in fact it is so rare (I have never seen one) that is on the endangered list and is protected. But as you said we do have Trillions of mosquitos. So I suppose one out of two is not too bad, so your positive message is accepted  But I still reserve the right to hit the snow plow driver on the head with a Chinese vise :lol_hitti

gman --- I've been following the "Polar Vortex" on the Weather Channel...

I have a question, only someone with firsthand knowledge, can answer...

Ready???

Wait for it...

WHAT IS SNOW???

Those of us, living on the Emerald Coast of the Gulf of Mexico, aren't familiar with that word...

What does it do???...:lol_hitti

What is it for???...:bounce:

Why do you need it???...:headscrat

Please answer these questions, because someone of my advanced state of decrepitude, has little empty spots in my grey matter, that need filling...

Thanks for your help...:evil::lol:

Although no one asked me, snow is what people have that do not like having a hurricane, flood, forest fire or tornado destroy everything they own every so often.

Rbarns, ironicly just tonight, Jeff Glor of our Channel 2 New was reporting that scientist are saying that the melting of the Glaciers releases it's grip on the Polar Vortex and allows it to centrifugally sling further south.---In the light of that we can assume that during the ice-age the North Pole was dry ground.---So in summation, the hotter it gets the colder it gets and vise-versa.:eyecrazy::dunno::headshake

I had not heard that. Well look on the bright side. Anyone man enough to bring home a 100 pound vise is probably not going to let the cold weather ruin their life. Just endure, survive and wait till it clears. You guys are tough!

It does get HOT down here. After the civil war, one of the northern officials sent to Texas to keep everybody in line was quoted in the August papers as saying, If he owned Texas and he owned Hell. He would rent out Texas and live in Hell.
