I got this anvil a couple weeks ago. I finally had time to get it unloaded and into my shop. I had to use my lift to lift it up on my welding table so I could take some pics of it.

Here you go:

Left side, no known markings that I can see.



Right side markings, length and anvil face flatness can be seen in this pic:

OK given the above, any idea what I have? Make, weight, material etc. etc. etc.?

Ask a good question get an easy answer:

You have the special 1.21 Flux Capacitor Model made in the USA by the PFNC company out of Gigawatts, Pa.

Hope that help you out I think I see it glowing from the pictures.

It's really beat, I can tell you that. But if it's not a hay budden, trenton, or a peter wright anvils or even a paragon it's not a collector piece. The easiest method to get the weight is to weight it as there is no stone weight marked on it.

I can tell from the pictures that it is not a Peter Wright. It should weigh in the ballpark of 140 lbs. If you could, please flip it upside down and let us see the underside.

Do you see any letters or numbers stamped in the foot on either the front or the back?

The only thing I've seen is what I posted. But that was with a one minute scrub with a brush. I plan to immerse it a couple gallons of white vinegar tomorrow.

I also weigh it as well. 140 lbs sounds about right.

Drop a steel ball (obtainable from Harry Epstein) from about 18 inches.
If it rebounds close to the 18 inch drop height, it's a very good anvil, halfway it's OK, less than that... it will have limited usefulness.

What if it's less than half, still useful, not useful or scrap?

It did come out of a once-active blacksmithing shop, previous owner got old and died and the shop was just left there.

****! Someone asked this before and I forgot to take one when I weighed it. Right now it's in a foot of gross electrolysis water so it might be a couple days before I see the bottom again.....

Ok decided to check it yesterday and change it's position, got as bunch of pics for the experts et al:

The lettering I read as "Black Imp" which is close to "Black Prince" as shown in this link provided above: http://www.anvilsinamerica.com/trademarks.htm

Below that are the numbers "175" or "176", which makes sense since that it's weight.

Note the underside and the base pics: What would cause that massive pitting and holes in the bottom and sides? Also note what apparently looks like a circular crack in the base pic.

For the bottom end pitting, maybe it partially sank into soft ground and was left there for a while? Could well have gone through a period where it was just considered junk that needed to be out of the way and wasn't worth anyone's while to haul off.
