Okay, finally grabbed some pics of my Millers Falls spiral screwdriver.

I picked it up several years ago at a sale in the area. The model number and patent date puts it in the 1930s, so I like to believe it was used somewhere putting Model As and duece coupes together.

Desperate times. Woke to -2°F in my neighborhood, 10° colder just an hour north in higher elevations.
Took a little drive after lunch, stopping at three second-hand shops. I bought three Craftsman nutdrivers for a buck-a-piece, and looked through some wrenches and screwdrivers.
Two small DOEs caught my eye, because of the recent JHWilliams / Whitman & Barnes discussion. I didn’t buy them, but here are some comparison pics. Looks like a PO reground the 1/4” end of the W&B (these are bolt-diameter, not across-flats sizes).

awesome! We got a common rare find it seems! I have two model As here at my place. My dads chopped coupe we built over the last 3 years, and the pickup Im building now with him! I think ill make it a point to use my driver on the build!

Should be the transitional. I don't think they made the butterfly for single line v only double.

Was doing another "need money come buy my junk" deal.
Was going through a farm shed & had made a pile of extension cords, ladders, yard tools, etc.
(Anything I can sell this summer at the fleamarket).
I saw the orange handle sticking out of a pile of junk, & underneath it the Snap-on mini pick set.
Kept digging.......
Saw the tool box tray with socket sets & those old black plastic handles on top.
Second jackpot in a week.
Paid $140 for the fleamarket stuff.
Paid $225 for the stuff in the photos.
Guy was happy.
So was I. Lots of OCD cleaning & polishing is next.

Oily: in your part of the world vise is spelled as VICE so you were correct the first time you posted. that said it looks like it's in pretty decent shape. any chance you can post up the width of the jaws, weight and maybe post more pictures from all sides of that old gem?

All: part of my hesitance for not buying more cool stuff is always budget if i really don't need it, but even more so it's getting organized so i can enjoy using or looking at the cool things. yesterday I started cleaning up a stout shelving unit i'll have with about 95% filled with vises (vices) and I made some progress taking off the stuff that was making it look like a CATCH ALL. i think this shelving unit will hold 10 or 20 more vises, but I'll try not to put any temp stuff on it again.

We saw a sign for an estate sale this morning close to home so we checked it out. There were some Proto professional chevron wrenches and a few more worthwhile tools. My wife spotted the partial gallon of paint thinner in the free stuff. We always grab any older thinner we see because what is currently being sold as paint thinner in California is worthless.

That mug is designed to look like a cragar mag wheel lug nut which is lug centric. It is laid on its bag with a handle on the side

It was single digits, but I managed to find these three oldtimey tools in the bottom of the same decrepit wooden tool box.

A Schollhorn shoe button tool, Roebling "Alligator" wrench, and a funky combination tool from a bike kit sold by Sears & Roebuck with their early bicycles. I will be posting more pics later.

Almost got frostbite in my hands at an unplanned TOO flea market stop (all at one booth!). However I think it was worth it!!

$20 got me the following...

-Stanley 60B 32oz. Lineman's claw hammer (been wanting one of these for a while now!!!)

-Vlchek Tools socket box (empty)

-Plvmb 5461 extension, 4", 1/2 drive, cross bar hole

-Wright hand forged Q10J thin single open end wrench, marked 15/16 OP., 5/8 S.A.E.

-Wright 10" adjustable...this looks OLD. Almond shaped hang hole ring any bells? Who private labeled this for Wright?

-Utica 94-8 "Select-O-Lock" 8" adjustable

-Indestro Super 779 combo wrench 15/16", NOS

-Jorgensen 106 vintage c-clamp w/ 'Mouse Ears', 6"

Concur on Barcalo, but I've seen that same teardrop hanging hole on Lawson pipe wrenches, too, and speculated at the time that perhaps they made them for Barcalo. They moved from Cleveland to Buffalo. Link here.

We are in the middle of the deep freeze, though not as bad as those Michigan Dakota peeps.

Didn't get as bad as expected here in South Dakota. Dropped to a low of -50F including the wind-chill. But I have steaks out for grilling tonight. We should be up to 45F today. A swing of almost 100 in half a week.

Lug: some furniture makers near me making HIGH END vintage raw edge type expensive stuff told me they'd pay a PREMIUM for those ALLIGATOR WRENCHES if I had any to sell. I think i have a few, but I told them that I WOULD NOT BE SELLING THEM ANY TOOLS to make handles out of them. I might change my mind in years to come especially if I want some of their furniture, but I think the Alligators are still useful as a tool.

Oily: WOW!!! very well done and did you say how wide the jaws were and how heavy? yep a day out of the fumes might be a good thing for us that tend to dive into areas that might be a tad TOXIC to find cool stuff.

ALL: vintage non working cement mixer is still on and postponed another weekend, but I think I can get that to work and maybe save me a little time so I can go to more sales.

- Crescent 4" - pretty wobbly.
- Proto LA 8" dated 45 or 55.

Despite the shape of the hole, I very much doubt that Barcalo was the supplier of that adjustable wrench. All of the Barcalo wrenches with that hole pattern have the style of handle in the first two pictures. The Barcalo adjustable wrenches with conventional handles have round holes.

I don't have a suitable scale to weigh her but from lugging it about I'd guess upwards of 25kg

Finally hit my first estate sale of 2019 yesterday. Most of the tools were cleaned out before I got there 3 hours after the sale opened. My son and I spent $36 on a bunch of tongue and groove 1 1/8 inch thick mahogany from a dismantled piece (about a third of it is in the picture), a coffee can of casters and angle brackets, 2 wood handled screwdrivers, 3 tape measures, about a dozen files, wood plugs and a box full of different hardwoods for lathe projects that is still in the Jeep.

Picked up a half dozen oak boards from a little over a foot to 2 and half feet long, Craftsman drill grinding attachment, large plastic bin, Phillips screwdriver and a wide pine board for $5.75. Almost didn't think I was getting out of the store with the oak when one of the workers starts yelling no, no, no when I was reading the $1 and $2 prices per board to the cashier. She then proceeded to reprice them at 50 to 75 cents each which was a pleasant surprise.

It's '55. It was made by J.P. Danielson, and the Plomb Empire did not own steely Dan until 1947. Prior to that, Utica was their adjustables supplier.

Catching up with a few things from last weekend.
Late to a decent looking estate sale. No first day deals, but still managed a few things.
3/8 Flying V that fills the hole between my 1/4 & 1/2 ratchets, some 3/8 =v= sockets, 1/4 breaker, large jar of fender washers.


Crowntop propane torch kit with a couple of well used tips and a full bottle.


Think I paid about $15 for all.

Flea market gave up some 1/2 =v= sockets, Nupla Los Angeles soft hammer, CM Pro Mechanic 12oz ball peen.


Dropped some cash at the flea today, but it was for a couple of things I've been wanting for a bit.

Stihl BR650 blower and a 50' 14ga retractable cord reel.


Also found a new Gearwrench precision driver set, Remington rifle rests, =v= and SK sockets and a couple of SO drivers.

You guys are doing good keeping things moving; between polar freezing for so many and now drenching rains on the western states, that's an accomplishment!

Nothing here worth getting in the car so it was a good day to move my youngest home after 5 years for collage and first job (She completed collage in 3).
