Some years ago i picked up a US general tool cart. I filled it up with my US craftsman tools of the time. The craftsman worked well for me, but eventually I upgraded to mostly snap on tools. As I started to pack up the craftsman for storage and putting all the snap on in the US general it just didn't feel right. Would you fill a us general with snap on? Thoughts? Starting to think about buying a new tool box.

Do you care? If so, don't do it.

Do you care if anyone else cares? If you do then don't do it.

The fact is, the box, nor the tools care.

As a weekend warrior, hell yes I would. Unless you really want to have a truck-brand box.

I inherited my Dad's toolboxes (he was an aircraft & diesel mechanic) and I got his Matco Professional Series box. They really are built much better than the US General and Craftsman boxes I have. So it stands to reason that a truck brand box can stand up to daily use and abuse much better.

Yeah this is just in my garage. Typical weekend warrior - not a professional.

Tools matter more than the box you keep them in. That said a nicer box is ...nicer.

Buy what you like and what works for you.

I have the opposite, Snap On box with HF (equivalent) tools. It works for me :)

100% agree. My snap on box is not going to make me any more money than my HF box. But its really nice :)

I certainly would work from a US General box. IMO, the US general boxes are a great value and the quality is reasonable. I'd save the money for more tools and equipment or just be debt free. In fact, I'm considering selling my small SO box (bought used) and buying a bigger US General box. It would be full of SO tools and top brands. I have nothing against SO it's just tough to justify the toolbox price when considering the time value of money calculation.

I've got a US General side cabinet attached to my 54" KRL. I couldn't care less.

It's the strangest thing....the US General holds tools just fine :D

Many people do it.

If you're looking to justify the new box, go for it, but it isn't going to make you better or worst anything. Maybe more organized, but that's about it.

Who cares what box they are in. But like anything else buy what you like for your own enjoyment. Get a used Snap on box or other tool truck brand they are nicer then cheaper stuff. I worked in a shop daily for 25+ years I always said I like a nice looking box since a spent half my life with it now I am a trainer and I love haveing all my nice tools and box at home.

I completely understand where you are coming from, but honestly if I wouldn't have came across a Snap on Classic 78 for the price of the US general, I would have gone with masterforce from Menards.

It's a non issue. If you like the box, what does it matter? If I found a soggy cardboard box I really liked - I'd keep my tools in it. The tools don't care what they're in.

I wouldn't. :)

It would give too much pleasure, to the Joneses, who could see, obviously I was not keeping up.

Besides, that set up would might be looked down upon by someone whose opinions matter only to themselves.

I couldn't have that.

My us general cart at work is full of my most used snap on, Mac, Cornwall and a couple others. The rest lives in a Matco 6s. I really don’t care about it being a us general, there really isn’t another cart as good as it anywhere near the price. Another guy at work has the same one.

I have MAC and Snapon in my US General and Proto in my Craftsman. You can get a lot more tools if you didn't pay a fortune for the boxes. I worked out of Snapon boxes for a while but they weren't mine. The only thing I don't like about the US General is the latch system. I really like grip latches like the Craftsman has.

If it works, it works. Try the drawers and latches. See if you think the drawers are stout enough. Do you like the drawer layout? If those are all a go, and the price is good for the quality you're getting, why does the brand matter? Use a heat gun and take off the logo, and solvent clean and buff it out if it bothers you. You can also go the tacky route, and put a snap-on logo on it.

Where do you buy your snap on logos?

I have looked at those. I agree they look good. Might have to take a trip to menards.

My Craftsman box holds my Craftsman tools, my Gedore, my Knipex, my SK, a few SnapOn, Felo, Wera, Vessel, TopTool, Tekton, Harbor Freight, Channellock, Xcelite, yada, yada.

So far not one hint of any civil unrest going on in my box. It's like a UN Meeting in there.

My HF 5 drawer cart is loaded with Proto, Snap-On, Wright, Williams, Knipex, etc. I wasn't really sure what I wanted for tool storage starting out and the carts were cheap enough to try until I knew what I wanted. I've outgrown the carts for primary storage and I think I might get a US General 44" and see how that goes. Someday I'd like to get something from Lista for the weight capacity (I have a decent amount of 3/4 and 1 inch drive stuff), but I'm not ready to commit to one until I have a better idea of what my storage needs really are.

I was lusting after a General but since shifted some stuff out of overloaded drawers on the old Cman and I can live with it. None of it is going to make me any more money or be any easier.

Now I'm wondering if it's ok that I wear my socks from target with my Irish Setter work boots...

I don't care about what brand the tool box is as long as it is reasonably solid and doesn't cost too much. The tools are far more important than the box.

I worked out a Waterloo toolbox for almost 35 years with a mix of Snap-on, Bonney, Proto and Craftsman tools. I didn’t give a rip about what name was on the front of box as long as I could secure the box. When I retired I bought new 2 new 44” US General toolboxes with all the top boxes sideboxes and closet. Now my Snap-On, Bonney, Proto and Craftsman tools reside in the HF toolboxes. It is all good and you saved money because you bought a decent box for your use. If you want peel off the US General logo and go to eBay and buy a new Snap-On logo there

My assumption is that the Snap-On tools would immediately begin to degrade, rust and basically fall apart. Snap-On would be able to sense that were stored in an inferior box and would would void any warranty.

I can understand if it's an OCD thing where everything must match. I'm like that in certain ways, like workspace organization and layout. THANKFULLY not for tools themselves because it's saved me a lot of $ buying used, building up sets, mish-mashing, etc.

I say, If you NEED more space, then upgrade to what makes most sense for you. But to buy a Snap-on box/cart "just cuz" sounds like a frivolous expenditure to me. If your setup ain't broke, why fix it? Unless you just hate that hunk of Chinese steel and every time you see it/have to get in it, you get angry, then hey it's your $, buy what you want.

I Will be filling a Us general (HF) box with a mix match of tools. I just ordered some Williams ratchets to go into it.

The things people choose to worry about amaze me.

Exactly...you know what i love about my harbor freight 44? The fact that it only cost me $300 brand new and it’s built well. That it, that’s where it ends. Would i like it better if it was a snapon? If it was built better sure, if they were the same then no i could care less. I only bought my 44 because of all the information posted on here about it, one thread in particular a member went to harbor freight and took thickness measurements and gathered a bunch of other data, he then went to Lowe’s, Home Depot, Sears, and anywhere else that was selling tool boxes and gathered the exact same information about the boxes they were offering. Want to know what the results were??? The cheapest option (harbor freight) had the thickest metal and i want to say the most capacity and also the bottom support was the best design structurally. Imagine that

Spending more money to impress other people or for the simple act of spending more is completely stupid in my opinion, but to each there now it’s not my money so i don’t care.

It does make me laugh when i see people who think this way though, by there logic say the comparable husky tool box at Home Depot is $500 and the harbor freight 44 is only $300, even if the harbor freight uses thicker metal, is constructed structurally better, and has more capacity, the husky is better because it cost almost double the price. Lmao **** like this makes me laugh.
