Monarch 215 Vise - What's it Worth?

Hi Guys,

Long time lurker first time poster. First off let me say thank you for the wealth of knowledge that this forum has provided me over the pas few years!

About a year ago I picked up this Monarch 215. Initially I was dead set on keeping it however, when I went to go pick it up it became apparent to me that this vise was smaller than I had hoped for. The seller made me an offer I couldn't refuse so, I bought it. None the less it was clean and very cool looking.

I have recently cleaned it up and applied a fresh coat of lacquer to it (sorry i didn't go the original black, I seen a post by a member here that did a couple his vises in Satin Oregano and I fell in love) lubed up the acme screw and slide and put it all back together.

This vise is in great condition for its age, no cracks anywhere. It does have the usual grind marks and someone used the slide as a anvil a couple times. I wouldn't say too too bad, just some "patina" if you will. Something interesting that I noticed while cleaning it up, there is a stamp on both jaws that is rounded and says "June 1911" is this the date the vise was made?

Anyway my question is, what's this vise worth? I see Ebay has some clunkers listed all the way up to 250 for this brand/model, unrestored. From my readings I understand that Monarchs usually command a higher selling point as they are somewhat desirable because of the Lion's head? I'm not looking to get rich here, just wondering what fair value would be as I would like to sell the Monarch and apply the proceeds to another larger vintage vise.

Thank you for your time!

Thank you! I must admit, I can't take all the credit. It was in very nice condition when I started.

I have the same vise. I picked mine up for 40 bucks in already great condition. If I saw your vise on Craigslist around here and the price was somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 bucks, I'd likely be a buyer. Prices vary by region. Keep this in mind.

1982fxr...It's a 4" jaw model.

Gonzo1717...You have a really nice Monarch 215! I think the "June 1911" stamp is actually the patent date. eBay sets the high end for the retail price, but you may be able to trade it straight up for a larger "common worker" model, from an interested GJ member.

thehorse13: I think that 40 would be valuing this one pretty low, just my opinion though. If I were looking for one of these in this particular model, I would gladly pay at least 100 for it.

1982fxr: No, this one is a 4". Thank you for the compliment!

Fierljeppen: Thank you!

Man, that ad with my vise imposed on it looks awesome! That really cool!! Almost looks like it was meant to be there!

I was thinking that about sleezebay. Typically it's the "dangle it in front of you" tactic with eBay. You want it? I got it but, you will pay 10X what the market commands for it as a "covienience" fee for not having to scour the earth for it.

I would gladly be interested in trading a GJ member! I'm in SoCal. Anyone interested let me know, I may be interested in tools as well as I have a new swivel base Wilton that I'm currently using.

The swivel base Monarchs bring 100ish. Fixed base Monarchs are much more common hence my valuation. They turn up in the mid Atlantic Craigslist sites all the time. Being close to the original manufacturing site presumably helps out with availability.

That said, you know the old saying. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it. The idea of a trade with a GJ member is a win/win though. Ebay tends to be retail plus 75% these days.

Whichever route you go, it's still a beautiful old vise. Thanks for showing us your Monarch.

I agree, things nowadays are becoming a bit bloated. Often times I see things listed and it's almost like since it's old, it's worth more. Unfortunately I am often guilty of p

Value depends on location.

If I was selling I wouldn't go below $140. I'd have painted it red though. Red just sells. I don't make the rules.
