Q1: So if you take a reel that is supposed to hold 50 foot of 3/4" hose, how many feet of 5/8" hose would the reel accept? I would imagine there may be a way to calculate this sort of thing. Or is it gonna be trial an error? Might be easier than way....

Q2: And if the reel is a spring-driven model, are there any considerations for regarding the spring tension, etc. with more length of hose on the reel? Or does it only depend on weight of the overall hose? Or something else?

Not an expert but have some experience.

ANswer 1, It will be trial and error because of the different OD's of different manufacturers hoses, but a good guess is 75' of 5/8 hose.

Answer 2, spring tension would be dependent on the number of revolutions the reel would have to make from fully extended to fully retracted. Weight would be a very minor concern.

I have sold a few spring rewind reels in the past, Hannay makes the best. If you try to take one apart (which I never have) realize the tremendous energy stored in that spring, it could hurt you quickly.

If you google Drum Capacity Calculator
but you will have to take some measurements, of the reel itself.
I am sure there is a way with simple math, but I cant think of any way!

go to www.coxreels.com they have bare reel specifications, with how much of what size hose a certain reel will hold. hand crank and spring return

P.S. i cant remember exactly where on the site that info is. but it is there i swear.

So for #2, if I put 75 foot of hose on a 50 foot reel, that's gonna cause some problems due to the tension?

i dont know about the hannay, but i have sprung, and resprun the cox reels, its pretty easy. with the bare reel the instructions say spring until its too hard to go anymore by hand and then do one more revolution until the ratchet stops the reel. then connect the hose and let it rewind slowly. you can respring a reel to handle any size, length or wieght of hose. i am by no means an expert but i do spring stainless steel reels for a customer of mine thats the only reason i even know that much

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. After I posted before, I got to thinking how I put a hose on a reel before. Basically, you preload the spring by unwinding the reel with no hose on it. Then you attach the hose and allow it to wind up on the reel. This was definitely a trial and error method to get the hose to retract completely but with not so much force as to slam the hose stop into the reel. I believe the springs would have a good deal of latittude to allow for various lengths of hoses, so you should not have a problem. If you are buying a new reel, the seller should be able to spec it for you. If you are buying a used one, you should be able to visually guess if it will hold the hose you intend on using, and if it is the right size, i think you will be able to make it work with the trial and error method.

Feel free to PM me if you care to. I don't always follw the posts as close as I could, but will be happy to help if I can.

Thanks. Yea, I went through a distributor to get some info and had them contact Coxreel. Coxreel said I can only fit 50 foot of 5/8" hose on a reel designed for 50 foot of 3/4" hose. That did not make sense to me. I figured maybe it was a "spring" thing, but could not confirm since I didn't talk to them directly.
