I need to firm up my old attic ladder. A metal bracket or shoe can prevent a direct wood to wood contact. Also, I can double up the hinge. Metal bracket or shoe I can fabricate from joist connectors. But hinges I have to buy. Does anyone know where I can find these? Thank you.

I second this. both myself, my parents and brother installed Werner aluminum attic stairs in our houses, 1000% better than the old wood 1989 stairs my parents had in their house.

The difference between a good ladder and my old ladder is the hinge hardware, as far as I see. If I can find the right hardware, my old ladder should be as good as a decent wood ladder. I agree: aluminum is lighter and better. If I cannot find the hardware, I will replace it with aluminum.

I agree, get a new ladder. You can buy an aluminum attic ladder for around $100 and sometimes on sale you can get one for around $80.
Not saying you can't fix the one you have, just saying sometimes when you figure the time, the effort and the expense it takes to repair something, it makes more economic sense to buy a new one.

Werner has gone bankrupt and sold the name more than once. If the ladder was from before 2007, then it’s from a different company, and this link is a dead end.

My Uncle, 2 years ago, bought a home. He was coming down the wooden attic ladder, it was wobbly, and he tripped and fell against the workbench.
Broke his rib, punctured his lung. His wife called the emergency squad, against my Uncles wishes.
They said at the hospital if his wife would have driven him there, instead of the squad coming to his home, he likely would have died.
I'd buy a new ladder as others have suggested.

Buy a new one. The assemblies are stupid easy to install. They come with gas cylinder assist now, so they are a dream to close.

If your wood attic ladder has knife-style hinges, replace them with heavy-duty plate-style hinges like the ones shown on the Louisville and Werner ladders in the links below. Plate-style hinges are more rigid because they **** metal against metal instead of wood against wood at the hinge points.

Don,t don t skim on buying a ladder. I know a few people that have fallen and hurt bad. Spend the bucks you can t take them dollars with you when you die..
I found out last year that my Werner Aluminum attic ladder was actually recalled - major safety hazard because the metal hinge failed and a class action lawsuit:

As others have noted, Werner went bankrupt and they are now operating under a slightly different name. They were offering a settlement but it was too late for me. (I had purchased the ladder from Lowes around 2007. I called and spoke with someone from the new company. They were offering a credit towards a new purchase of one of their ladders, which I thought was generous, but I ended up going with a wooden ladder from Amazon Warehouse ($400 Fakro that I got for $100 but had to basically build a new frame for it because of shipping damage)
Don't discount wood - I think our wooden Fakro is actually nicer than the aluminum Werner

You have more options at Home Depot if you order online and use the free 'ship to store' or free delivery option. Or check out Amazon
Home Depot actually sells the Fakro brand and their main selling point is the 'door' in insulated and sealed, versus a 1/4" piece of plywood. I don't know if you care about insulation or where your actually installing it, but it is something to consider
