I use Super Premium 20mm ish large bits in my press and there is no run out. Even the reduced shank are spot on. After playing around with china junk that wobbles like Lexy Panteras ***, the precision is jaw dropping.

30-40ish $ per bit is hard to swallow but its worth every penny.

I would really like to get a full set of bits as right now, well, it's a bit of a **** shoot finding a bit that I need. But a little leery given this:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=403174
Don't give it another thought. We have many in regular use in various businesses. We've drilled thousands of holes with them and basically never had a failure. A couple years ago I started setting up a personal shop for my own use and here is one order from HJE, along with duplicates of work drills for my personal use, and some parts recently drilled with Magnum SP in 4140:

A few things to help some of those folks that are new to drilling. To make good holes and not damage your bits, familiarize yourself with this info. This will help a ton and you will be happier with your drills. ;)

How often do deals similar to these pop up? I'm debating the left handed drill set. Looks like around 20% or a bit more off. But not sure if thats possible from time to time?

Thanks,

The group buys don’t come around on GJ very often, maybe once a year (PT Doc can offer more detail since he is usually involved in coordinating, instigating, arm twisting). :). Lately the other avenue is eBay in conjunction with their 1 day coupon code that applies across the site. Typically 15% off. They have been offering that about every 2-3 months. We will probably see some leading up to cyber Monday.

I'm on the fence for Set #1. It would be THE COMPLETE SET to have - I just can't tell how much I'd use it. Right now, for tapping, I get the closest fractional and go for it.

The others also look like great deals, just not something I'd need.

At any rate, thanks for putting this together - whether I order or not!

Thanks PT Doc!

I just talked to Patrick. I'm in for the 115 piece set.

This was perfect timing for me because I was planning on picking up a Norseman 115 piece HSS set during an upcoming holiday deal. Now I'll have a better set at a better price.

Thanks again!

Thanks to everyone that ordered!

Orders need to be placed by 2PM EST Friday.

If anyone is interested in the 115 piece set, think about getting it now. The price for this set will be quite a bit higher in the future.

Thanks again.

Damn, I missed this. These bits worth the extra coin?

What are you comparing pricing to? Norseman has been and continues to be a premium USA manufacturer of cutting tools.

http://www.norsemandrill.com/about-norseman-drill.php

You can speak to someone at anything by calling or emailing. This is not a fly by night operation that sells on eBay with bits sourced from questionable manufacturers. I have numerous sets in various configurations and have been very happy. Many GJ members own these as well a the feedback is consistent about cutting quality. Most sets come in USA made Huot metal indexes.

If you have specific question, I should be able to answer them. Just send me a message. Thanks

I didn't get in on this deal as I wanted shorter length bits, but I'll throw my $.02 in......

Most people don't understand cutting tools (geometry, coatings, feeds/speeds, lubrication, etc.), therefore they often are used improperly or in the wrong application. Just about any American made drill bit will be pretty damn good these days when used properly. In this case, the bits were 135 degree split points, which are ideal for metal working as opposed to the commonly found 118 degree bits stocked at every hardware store in America. If you're just drilling lumber, these bits aren't for you. If you're drilling metals, these would most definitely be worth the price. Take a Home Depot drill bit, regardless of brand, and try to put a hole in a thick piece of steel. It will wander all over, get super hot, take forever, and be garbage when you're done. Take an American/Euro/Japanese made 135 degree bit with some Tap Magic (or other cutting fluid) and perform the same task and you will wonder why you ever wasted your money on hardware store drill bits.

Well stated. 135* split point, proper speed (reference a chart), feed (make a chip) and cutting fluid will allow you to drill through anything.

I received my 115pc. set yesterday. I am very satisfied with the purchase. These are nice drills!

Many thanks to PT Doc and Patrick at ISC for arranging this deal!

Count me in should a deal like this be arranged again. In browsing the Norseman catalog I saw several pieces I'd like to add to my kit. Obviously we'd need to give it some time to allow interest and budgets to build back up.

PT Doc I think there would be a reasonable demand for a screw machine length set. Like the SPT-29 or a larger set

Allow me to preface my response by saying that I thought the selection of sets chosen for this offer were excellent. The only reason I didn't go in on all three sets was because I already happen to own a Norseman left-hand set and a few Norseman step drills.

Personally, I'm looking to add screw machine length, silver & demming, high helix, and brad point sets to my collection.

I realize in typing this that you created a thread requesting suggestions and that I did not chime in at that time. Next time (fingers-crossed for a next time) I'll be sure to provide my input at the appropriate time.

All in all, I felt between the curation and legwork you did excellent work and GJ should be thankful.

Thanks for the input. I have NO problem folks chiming in what you want when we are trying to put deal together. Once the deal is going though, chiming in that someone wanted something else just muddies the water.

Seems like screw machine drills are in demand so I will be looking into offering these through ISC for the next Garage Journal offer.

something in the Ultra Dex case would be awesome

The 29 piece black gold drills in the ultra dex has been requested by quite a few folks. I will look into offering this for the next round.

I have the 29 pc in an Ultra Dex. I hate it - you can't read the molded in sizes at all. Tried highlighting with a sharpie - no good either. I replaced it with a Huot index.

BTW - thanks for the 115 pc set!

I’d like a high quality drill set to be used with a handheld drill. Looking for the best Magnum set for drilling through stainless and another set for daily use. Both sets I’d like every drill size in it.

In my opinion the Huot metal indexes are really nice. Very high quality that is tough to beat.

I ordered the Viking Tools version of the 17-pc left handed drill for <$90. My understanding is they are the same as the norseman.

P.S. is there any chance a future group buy would be a certain % of any products? I'd love to get some long bits, etc. but they are probably not the high volume items.

Here's a dumb question. Recently I have been investing in decent drill bits. I have a cheap set of left handed Tool Shop bits from Menards, only because thats the ONLY set that was available locally and I needed to drill a bolt out of the thermostat housing of one of boat's engines.

I was going to invest in a good set of left handed drill bits, because I figure that's the one time you don't want something to break. But then I thought about it, and it's like with how you use them (drilling out rusty fasteners with handheld drills in non-ideal situations) any smaller bit is much more likely to break... so should I just have cheap bits instead?
