Post vise score!

I've been buying, 'restoring' and reselling vintage vises for a few months now to supplement my income. I've only kept one so far, a stationary 4" bullet that's been so badly beat up I don't feel bad keeping it in my little garage shop and beating it up more.

This one that came home with me tonight however... I am pretty sure this one is staying. It feels like one of those 'once in a lifetime' scores that I will always regret selling.

I just got it home, so I haven't gone over it carefully yet... I can see the Iron City 'star', and that's the only mark I've found so far.

It has 6" jaws, and some of the cross hatching left.

It weighs 90 lbs, and the handle is arrow straight.

Cost... $85! Yay me!

Hmmm so HB Smith and Oswego used Parker type jaws in those Combination vices?

I thought so too few years back with this messed up O-T i got. I doubt rev scott could fix that stationary jaw tower.

Guys I only got 5 hospital beds and they are all full, a waiting room filled with less serious patients. Next time you are in Estes Park Wrenchguy drop it off, I'll give it a look.

Anyone got a guess on the size of this thing? I'm not going any higher on the bid unless you guys can convince me it's an 8"er...…...

Got hammered at $500. sounds steep to me, but then there's shipping on top of that!:shocking:

Hey there folks, wanted to see what your thoughts are regarding this.

A while back I posted in the “Vise parts for sale &wanted” here(I’m sure that is not the threads actual name I’m guessing atm) that I was wanting a main spindle nut for a Reed 107 if anyone had one available. Of course I haven’t heard anything, until about three hours ago. Received an email through GJ from someone and to cut to the chase when I asked for pictures of the spindle nut this is what I received. Now, I’m not planning to communicate any more with this individual but was interested to hear what you all thought. Thanks for your time, and it’s great to have such a place to come to where I find other sick individuals who also are generally fascinated with and like me probably obsess over vintage vises . Josh

Those are nuts... not trapezoidal or square thread yet show either a locking or clearance reducing design. SPAM for sure.

So here's an interesting one:

There's a Prentiss 82 on sale in local CL, been there for a couple of weeks. The pictures the seller used are the EXACT pictures KMScott used in the forum that are linked in the vise spreadsheet.

Hmmmmmm........ strange.

That old Prentiss has been up on CL for months. I guess the seller is really holding the line on his pricing.

Oh
Just ordered a Capri 4" forged steel bench vise. Was looking at the FS-V, but opted for steel over ADI. Anyone familiar with the Capri steel vise?

Can you all let me know if you feel this Wilton 1750 looks to be in good shape and worth $165? I've been scouring the local listings and good vices don't pop up too often. I'm not a professional mechanic, homeowner use but I definitely need a vice for future car repair projects https://charlottesville.craigslist.org/tls/d/barboursville-wilton-1750-vise/6820965593.html

$150 is an OK price. You could delay, check C/L every hour or 2 waiting for a super good deal. Or you could not go Wilton bullet and get an excellent USA made vise from Rock Island, Morgan, Reed, Hollands, Athol, or other brands spoken about on this forum probably for a lower price.

eBay seems to bring the highest prices... so for comparison, here is a 1750 in more beat up shape that sold 4 weeks ago for $127 plus shipping.

But the point is why did he steal the pictures from this forum instead of posting his actual photos?

I suppsoe he could be the actual owner of the vise KMScott used in the spreadsheet?

Apparently lightning can hit the same spot more than once.
Just picked up my 2nd Prentiss Bull Dog 456 double swiveler (6" jaw, 168 lbs)

When I got my first one, I did a lot of searching and found only one other of these. And now I have 2. Lol

Black one I just got. Blue one I got last year.

This GJ forum is an outstanding place. I have been pleasantly surprised by the amount of great tips I have received, particularly when it came to me futzing with my Reed vise. Often after posting on this particular thread, people have reached out to me Write me a personal message and offers suggestions and help. Kevin, @nutjob offered a suggestion regarding my handle cushions which I know was a good one but making the parts he suggested was a bit out of my wheelhouse as is said... well Kevin contacted me and so very kindly offered to make me a set and suggested, while hard, they would fit over my handle ends. What showed up in the mail were a selection of custom made and expertly crafter thick rubber “washer” bumpers out of thick and strong rubber. (SBR). Kevin said they would take some work to fit and I told him that I accepted the “challenge “. Anyhow, it worked and GJ members come through with classy, generous and kind expertise!

Thank you Kevin!

I made an “ice cream cone” from delrin with about a 10 degree angle starting at 3/4” and finishing near 1 3/4” using a hollowed out large end to facilitate fitting over the ball end. Armor Al was a suitable lubricant and I tightened the jaws with the handle in the most advantageous position, got on my knees, used 8 of my fingers to pull the ripper over the end wher they snapped onto the shaft, quite literally.

Thank you so much Kevin! I hope I can repay the favor one day soon.

I have an ice cream cone I can send to who may need it.
I had a Reed with a large ball end that was a pain to slip the o-rings over. I found a piece of PVC that the OD was a bit larger that the ball, gripped it in the vise to hold it and was able to get the o-ring on it. The next part is easier with 3 hands, press the PVC tight to the ball end, and slide the o-ring over the ball. I did chamfer the end of the PVC so it fit the ball almost to the center otherwise it might get stuck in the "gap" between PVC and ball.

I use a piece of 1/4" rubber purchased from McMaster and have been able to stretch the rubber alot and not have it break. Part number 86335K17

I purchased the MAYHEW hollow punch set and can mount 2 punch's at the same time so perfect donuts!

Kevin

Unfortunately everything I’ve seen on CL or FB has either been junk or overpriced. Not willing to spend $400 on a vise. For $150 having something I won’t have to worry about breaking seems good to me. I’ll take the money I saved put it towards a good anvil 😎.

What are the odds of finding two? The Chas Parker Prentiss vises are a rare breed indeed. Great pickup.

I'm in central Virginia too. If you are willing to do a little driving, this Morgan or Columbian would be worth picking up. The Columbian is missing the pipe jaws, however. I had a Columbian 203 1/2 I gave to a friend and I have a Morgan 4 1/2 Star vise. Both are excellent.

Columbian https://fredericksburg.craigslist.org/tls/d/fredericksburg-large-antique-vise/6825134999.html

Morgan

Edit: just noticed the Columbian appears to be welded to it's swivel base.

I'm still in shock lol
Now for the real world: one of the mounting feet was broken off the black one. It was repaired (look under the slide, foot is squared, unsure if it's weld or braze. Looks well done). Slide NOT cracked. However, the tiny little wrench stamped PRENTISS is missing with original draw bolt and nut :(
There's just modern hex filler nut and bolt.

I got it with this Dake arbor press for 250, so I'm happy about that. The press outweighs the vise by 28 lbs, not including stand lol

You scored big time. I’d love to see more pics when you get a chance. The blue vise seems to be in A+ condition, I really like the circle side Prentiss vises with the split bases. The arbor press stand loos like it’s worth a $100 all by itself.

The blue one is photogenic lol it has some quirks. There is weld on the swivel jaw pad, but only on pad not on vise. However I can't get that pad off. I guess I have a parts vise if I need LOL

The black one was bought new by Goodyear Aerospace when that was a thing. P/o worked there and they let him take it home. So I'm the 3rd owner!

The press stand looks to be honest like a high school weld shop project. It's heavy. So there's that.

You might have already seen this but it’s from a brochure that somebody posted a few months ago. I believe it was from the late 40’s.

I have some scans of a '48 Prentiss cat that Fierljeppen was nice enough to share. Did you take a look at my photo albums? I have a lot of pics of the blue one in it.

I just found it, very interesting. Did you get the swivel jaw to move on the black one yet?

My first vise video attempt :)

Thanks for posting that video of your collection. You’ve got some great ones.

BTW, what exact color paint is that green Reed? Rustoleum or ???

Dave:
Those stuck swivel lock pins certainly are difficult. I struggled greatly with a Reed 406.
Hint: drill and tap the pin and fabricate a puller. I didn’t try a slide hammer but that might work too. :dunno:

For some strange reason I got five orange vises in a row between Halloween and Thanksgiving.17619229138c16ca48bff4701627fb91.jpg
Then Christmas rolled around and this happened with three vises in a row.

I can’t wait for Saint Patrick’s day but I’ll definitely be taking Easter off.

Speaking of Easter vises, this one is pretty extreme. Previously posted by a GJ member but I don’t know who...
