Creating Panaramic Views of your Shop Interior

Just a tip to you fellow garage nuts wanting to show off your place...

I had some friends over to see The ASYLUM the other day and it was their first time checking it out in person. One of them had been seeing pictures all along the way and mentioned it looked a lot different in “real life” than in the pictures.

So I decided to create a panaramic view of the interior to post in my build thread. I took six pictures circling around the place and used some software to "stitch" them together. I think the results turned out great and help explain the layout. There are several software programs that will do it but I used a Free Trial version of Panaramic Software and it only took a few seconds to select and stitch the pictures together.



Important Tip: If you hold the camera level as you circle around, you don’t get that vertical perspective angle that the program has trouble with. The pictures that I took looking up as I circled didn't turn out so well because it had a problem stitching the various angles together.

Here's what it came up with using the pictures taken from the ground looking up (certainly not quite as good):


These particular pictures were taken standing on a ladder and show the second floor of my shop. I will post the 6 base photos later so you can see what they looked like individually.

My little Kodak point-n-shoot will stitch together three pictures as soon as you take them, without needing additional software.

Very nice. I remember reading about that feature of my Kodak camara but never tried it. I will soon.

Sorry for yet another slightly off topic post - I recently took this picture, using the panoramic feature of our Kodak camera for the first time. This is the 2 feet of snow that hit Virginia this past weekend. After this picture we got almost another foot - note the driveway is clear but the street is not (in fact it wasn't cleared by VDOT for 5 days).

Very nice. I remember reading about that feature of my Kodak camara but never tried it. I will soon.

Having used both the software included with my old Canon, and the on-camera function of the Kodak, I much prefer the Kodak. The results are just as good directly from the camera, and it eliminates a step. Software will allow you to stitch more than three photos, but it's pretty rare I'd need to capture more than the Kodak will do at once.
