Dang Bob, you are KILLING it!

I'd have been all over that shop-built box as well! VERY cool!

I had planned on one sale sneak-out today, but work made other plans...

Another dry hole this morning, unfortunately this was an hour away and over a toll bridge. Large black Craftsman griplatch toolbox in the pics. Family instructed the esale company to pull all the tools out of the sale. Of course the esale company didnt bother to update their site.......

I REALLY hate that <s>****</s> stuff!

I've been curious myself, but on close inspection with a 10X loupe, the only marking on it is "JAPAN".

Doing a little comparative anthropology this morning. I’ve lived in SE PA for thirty years. I didn’t grow up here, but rather north-central PA, where winter comes each year and ices the roads, yet people somehow go on with their lives. It still surprises me how different the culture is here. Weathercasters mention a flake of snow, and the grocery stores sell out of milk, bread, and eggs an hour later. Schools close and lawn chairs take possession of all available on-street parking.
Yesterday, I noticed two promising 8am-3pm garage sales on CL for Saturday. I marked them on my map app. It snowed about 3” last night. I figured there’d be a little delay, so when I got up, brushed off the car, and eased out onto the plowed, wet streets, it was past 8:30.
Stopped at the first place. 1960s refrigerator with the doors off on the curb, some rusty office furniture scattered around the driveway. Looks hopeful. But two cars ploughed in, sidewalks covered in virginal snow, no lights on. No phone number on CL. No updates either. Moved on to the second address.
Hmm. Realtor sign out front, but same situation with the unblemished snow and lights, no update on CL. OH COME ON!
Work with me people. It’s winter. It’s snow season. But if you advertise “everything must go,” get out of bed and open your sale. Or at least postpone it!

LS it may not be the difference in location but the time that has passed. Its a completely different generation, almost two, and those in their 30's have a completely different expectation and ethic than those in their 60's....

The demographics have also changed, and for many areas the culture is no longer what it was 30 years ago. Maybe in rural areas, but not in many urban and suburban areas.

So his happened much faster that I expected! After finding the Peugeot, "flank drive" DOE, and looking on the Bay, I bought one the next size up. it came in TODAY!

I assumed it must have been MUCH closer that I realized! it want! ir came from Pennsylvania!

here is is with it's sibling. not the recessed panel on the larger, and none on the smaller. I checked more listings, and apparently it was because the smaller one was too small for the recess, as all the 8 X 10's I saw were the same as were the larger sizes consistent with the recess... :dunno:

I tested the 14MM and I STILL like these! Good wrenches! MUCH better than a Std DOE for grip!

I found a few of those as well a while back. Definitely an interesting design. I’ve never really tried wrenching with them though. Want to add a to your collection?

I completely sympathize with you, Lesserson. Three of my four planned stops today were closed for snow today, with barely an inch on the ground by 9am. One had a note on the door announcing a postponement, another had in fact updated their website and the third had neither.

The fourth sale was open, however. The ad showed a shed in the back corner of the yard, so I started there first. There were only one set of footprints in the snow ahead if me, so I felt optimistic. Not much in the shed, but I grabbed a wire brush, the Stanley Handyman ratcheting screwdriver, and in the corner I spotted a sundial. I lugged it out and sent SWMBO a picture. She said yes, but only if $20 or less. I hauled it up through the yard and front door to the lady running checkout, where I told her I'd look through the rest of the house and come back. I found the obligatory basement workbench and picked out a few more treasures. When I returned to checkout lady and asked for a price, she said "I think $45." When I asked about the sundial, she said "$30, I've had a bunch of people ask about it since you brought it in." I reminded her that in fact I was the one who tramped across the snow and found it in the first place. She ended up letting me have it for SWMBO's $20 target, and I got the rest of the tools for another $10.b410e24951f3e5ab9e43eb30b1165a7c.jpg86026ea0f993c37501bd3bae17f54fad.jpg84f15ecc216e20323ad5c7ecd85b88cc.jpg54591a4df0fdde83646fc1a733007dcf.jpg4a799d0682f33c9b15d1be97dbd38af8.jpg

The last stop was the no-show, no-updates sale, so I gassed up the truck and was headed for the on-ramp to go home when I spotted a ReStore banner to my left. I didn't even know there was one in this location! I pulled in--turns out they've only been open since the new year.

I walked the length of the show room, passing mostly furniture and lighting fixtures. I spotted a pile of brand new LED shop lights at $15 apiece, and gathered up six for the garages (beats $25/ea on Amazon). I found the tool section and fished out a Blue-Point BP-12 ball pein from the hammer bin for $5, and I added the two Old Masters Penetrating Stain 1/2-pints for $2 each.

About that time, I heard someone say "This area is not for customers." I look up and see a guy in the "back area" where new donations are sorted and priced. He left the area, and being the curious type, I walked up to the yellow line to peer in and see if they had anything interesting.

They did. Barely beyond the yellow line was a big ol' bench vise. I flipped it around and saw "Reed". Thanks to this web site, I knew enough to get my adrenaline flowing. I casually flagged a volunteer down and asked for a price. He called another guy out and after some head scratching, he said "Oh, I think we ask $25 for those things." Nodding, I said "Hmm. I can do that."

The vise turned out to be a Reed 104 1/2 with very little slop, nice jaws, no abusive hammer marks, and only a slightly bent handle...it weighs in at 56 lbs.

Nice finds BB! I have two of the reed 104-1/2's I keep playing with the idea of mounting them on posts leading to my corner storage yard and shed. Then I consider what is needed to keep rust at bay for outside vises...

Still raining here but two sales stuck it out, the HS flea was rained out for at least the third month in a row...

Slim pickings, but not terrible:

First thing I saw at #1 stop was a steel plate that turns out to be another 3 legged cast iron work plate this one is 12-1/4 X 18-1/4, and at least 1" thick - the one I got last year was 20 X 20 but only 5/8" thick. I think I like this one better.

A couple of 18X24 aluminum restaurant trays, - I use these for camping tables on top of aluminum Coleman stove/cooler box stands. (Now I need a couple more of those...)

A few tools; the Brass Plumb bob is a general (the one last week appeared to be home made?) and the chalk line was apparently bought specifically for it, as it looks to have never had chalk inside it. A good idea for the line, but the crank handle is busted... The 6" clamp is Jorgensen, The odd ratchet is a double swiveler? and the head is on the 1"4 drive scale but the drive is 3/8". No makers marks other than CV-R. Bought as its certainly unique, almost certainly Asian, but I'm hoping not MIC.

$20 for all that from first stop.

The mini Whia screwdriver and the 9MM HP bullet were free at stop #2

We drove to Sonoma today to the estate sale of a vintage car collector. There was a Model A Ford flatbed and a ‘30s De Soto for sale. We found some worthwhile tools plus a postwar S-K carry box that is an upgrade to one I already have. No tray unfortunately. The first picture is everything. The second and third are a Zim valve spring tool and some mostly =V= Craftsman. Next two are S-K and Thorsen. Next are tools for Username and my first ever Par X tool along with the obligatory crossbars.:)
-Don

I have a similar toolbox with the tray, you can have it

After yesterday’s long jaunt, today we went to a couple of estate sales within a couple miles of home. I thought the first one looked more likely but there was just a few worthwhile items. The second sale was the winner of the day with plenty of old tools. The first pictures are the tools from the first sale with a closeup of the early Nicholson logo on the file card, as usual missing the pick. The next shots are the tools from the second sale, with tools from the Plomb empire separated out. Does anybody recognize the socket holder? I found one of the mystery M.H.T. Co. DBE wrenches and the last shot is early P&C.

D42, who made the blue handled cross pein? And that socket spinner?

Looks like a Blackhawk spinner. Lucky find!

Bomber- nice spotting at the Restore.

I love when I find that cool item at an estate sale that they didn’t know was there, and then the price is very high. Happened more times than I can remember.

A vintage boy scout pin worth a few bucks buried in a box of hardware and parts in a the basement of a pro sale comes to mind. I probably could have bought the whole box for 7 or 8 bucks, but I found the button and stupidly asked about it and they basically said thanks for finding that in the junk, that’ll be $15. No thank you, lol.

LS I can’t explain the snow closings, it normally slows things down but doesn’t cause closings where I’m from.

Your story reminds me of another pro estate sale a few years ago. Same bum company mentioned in last post.

It was a very snowy morning. The weather had been very bad the previous days and the night before. I was on a mission because I saw a Craftsman stainless ratchet in the photos. It was a bright sunny morning so I drove about 40 mins one way due to the snowy roads, and had no problems at all in my little Kia. For a Saturday morning, it seemed odd that only one pickup with a plow passed me on the road near the sale. Got to the sale and saw one lady going to the door and thought awesome, no crowd.

Turned out the sale was closed because there was a driving ban all outside the city. Oops. The thought never crossed my mind. The home owner, a nice elderly man was home and invited me in. He said the sale is postponed a week. He asked me what I was after and I think I told him a ratchet and tools.

I went back to the sale a week later and first thing went to the tools in the garage. It looked like the Stainless rat was gone, but the sale had just opened. Turns out it was covered up by something on the table. Maybe he did it for me, even though I wasn’t specific. If he did, that was very cool. I also found another surprise, the 1/4 Dayton rat made by Bonney which is quite tough to find.

Yeah, I once bought a old hand carry box full of junk just to get the Proto keychain driver I spotted. They priced the lot, I bought the lot.

Don,
It's a stretch but does it appear to be cut? If so the socket holder appear very similar to this Plomb socket holder. Yours is a couple short on the count.Screenshot_2019-03-02-17-25-55.jpg

My favorite junk hardware box story is I was in a basement one time and there wasn’t much in tools. I found a little wood box of mixed rusty nuts, bolts and screws for two or three bucks. This big jerk who was a regular tool buyer came in and laughed and scoffed at my little box of rusty hardware and says what are you gonna do with that. I went home and laid out a sheet of newspaper, and dumped the box out to see what was in there. On the bottom was a vintage Les Paul guitar pick. You never know. :lol_hitti I never told the guy after.

A nice crisp morning to be our garage sailing.

The first stop was one of the estate sales from yesterday, hoping to pick up some on half price day. Well, half off day is tomorrow, but he cut me a deal anyway. I got the SK speeder, unmarked breaker bar, and MAC screwdriver. Next stop was a bust, and the third stop was half off day, just with mostly cheap tools, But I managed to pick up SK metric sockets and a few others, along with this revolver lead cleaning kit. Lastly, I stopped a pawn shop, where I found the Proto box. All in all, not too bad a day.

Speaking of junk bins, this was a whopping $1 today at a yard sale.

Mixed bin which contained hardware, 4 Craftsman 3/8 metric sockets including everyone’s favorite the 10mm, some Taiwan metrics, fake silver kids necklace (she already ganked the heart), Landon’s bracelet (trash can already, sorry Landons out there), generic church key, metal strap roll, some bits and dremel discs, etc.

Anyone know what the red thing is? Plastic with brass parts maybe,

Green handle ugly Snap On screwdriver (never find those).

2 Craftsman 1/2” socket rails.

The hammer is a Cheney and the cool spinner is a Blackhawk. Judging by the design details and through the handle extension capability, Blackhawk may have been the manufacturer of the RTEC spinners with the same unusual colored handle. I cleaned up the rest of the Blackhawk, MAC and little Craftsman Crown caliper.

Roy,
It has definitely been cut and the cut end is loose. I thought it might look Plomb-like. Were they used in the toolmobile?

Yes and in the 30s they were included in some of the socket boxes.
You could also purchase them out right.

The red plastic thing is just a holder for the nuts and washers that are attached. This comes with a new lead-acid battery.

Sounds good, shoot me a pm when you plan to come down here

I appreciate the offer and I’ll definitely take that off your hands if it’s the one you posted in the classifieds. How far off of Highway 50 is your place? Here is where half of my S-K stuff is at the moment.

I had a great "quality over quantity" small haul day at the flea, if I do say so myself.

The alligator wrench is a Roebling. The hand axe is a WINCHESTER. The hammer is a Bluegrass. And the ratchet, which for many should need no introduction, is a Blackhawk freewheeler with a 1942 date code.

Two quick stories on this haul.

First, I didn't even think I would get out today, because my daughter, the good samaritan with little common sense, who lives by herself in an apartment in Brooklyn, is visiting with the rescue dog she is "fostering" on a trial basis. It's name is Ghost, but it would be better named Satan. She came home with it because she is at her wit's end. After approximately 30 seconds with the dog, I could see why. It is 1-1/2 years old, supposedly, but acts like it's 3 months old. It is the craziest dog I have ever seen in my life, and I have been around some high-intensity dogs - we raised beagles and German short haireds when I was a kid, and I now own an Aussie/Border mix. It doesn't have an aggressive bone in its body, it's just all dog all the time. There is literally no off switch. Turns out to be a Jindo. Sacred in South Korea. But, after reading about the breed, Ghost is a perfectly characteristic specimen. So when I left it was late and I promised it would be quick. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Second, sometimes it pays to make friends. I was walking to my car when a guy I am friendly with standing by his truck flagged me down and showed me the Blackhawk freewheeler. One of the vendors gave it to him because he thought it was broken!
