Here's some pictures of my leg vise I got for $30. It needs some work obviously and the leg and mounting bracket are bent from the building collapse. The main nut is not original. My firefighter / blacksmith friend will likely get this vise, he says he can make a new main nut on his lathe.

Estate sale finds:
IMG_0507.jpgIMG_0509.jpgIMG_0510.jpgIMG_0508.jpg

The monkey wrench has a patent date of 1911. They were all a lot rustier when I purchased them.

$20 for all.

Hit an estate sale this morning...Dake arbor press Model 0 $10, 3 cans of lube $1/ea, Stanley #5 jack plane $20, Plomb 3/4" wrench $3, Snap-On L-710 1/2" ratchet $15, Nutcrackers - The Texan and The Hamilton, Stanley No 299 utility knife & 6 small oilers. As I all too often do I leaped before I looked on the arbor press. As you can see in the pic the front piece has the corner cracked loose. I also missed at the estate sale that the mouth of the #5 plane has a hairline crack. It is a type 9. If anyone knows if it's possible to get the part to fix that Dake arbor press please let me know. Anyone know what the Plomb wrench was used for? Does it have any trade value or are they a dime a dozen?

I just had a small piece brazed on a Wilton vise and it looks like a good repair. So I would find someone that can braze and have it repaired. Parts should be preheated and it will be as strong as the adjoining metal.

As for the 3/4" wrench, I think it may have been used to tighten and loosen 3/4" nuts, but then, I'm an Aggie, what would I know...:)

Nice score on the arbor press...i just recently picked up a Dake no. 1-1/2 but nowhere near that cheap.

Dake is still in business

Is that Plomb a single-ended wrench? Those are pretty old, and rare. No idea of any value though.

bmw It is single ended. Stamped "Plomb Tool Co. LA. CAL.". I meant to ask if it was of any trade value. Fingers sometimes do not listen to brain. :)

I believe it is for a Ford main bearing wrench. See pic. If you are looking to trade it off I would love to have it.Screenshot_2019-03-06-17-37-34.jpg

If you dig around deep enough on the Dake website, you should find the parts manual for the Model #0. It will give you the part number for the RAM CAP. You can then call customer service to check on availability. Might as well order new shims that go behind the cap while you’re at it.

Be careful removing the drive pins on the badge, they’re brittle and really stuck in there tight.

OBTW - You **** on the price.

jakemac Thanks for the info!! That's as good as I was hoping for - a good possibility that parts might be available and it can be repaired. I'm looking at the manual and parts list now!

I've never removed drive pins. What I've heard is to cut a slit in the head and then back them out with a screwdriver. That sound right?

Thanks again!

I had no idea what this thing was when I saw it at the yard sale.
Maybe a brass cane?
Bought it for 7 bucks.
Worth twice that in brass scrap, so I can't lose I thought.
Turns out it is called a grain probe.
You stick it down in a load of grain at the mill, rotate the knob on the end, & wheat beans or corn flows inside the slots. Close it up, pull it back out & dump the sample out the hole in the end of the knob.
Farmers grain loads are deducted for moisture & quality.
Anyway, kinda cool I thought.
Turns out they are still sold but in longer lengths for the larger trucks.

Country lad from the North West of England (Cumbria).
Too hilly and wet for grain but perfect for sheep!

That's still a cool "doodad" to have on the wall 3Jakes

Tbh I love a "WHAT THE HELL IS IT??" purchase as much as a deal.

Last year I picked up this from a dealer who thought it was a type of theodolite...as did I... But its actually a Helio graph from the British army! 1551980983980.jpeg

:shocking: I have the British Army tripod for that! I am on the road, won't be home until late, but I will post photos at that time. If you're eager, you can find last year's Garage Sale thread, hosted by yours truly, and use the search thread tool to search on "Heliograph" and it will pop up. If you're not completely wedded to it, I would be very interested in re-uniting them. :)

In other news, I made two picks today, a few hundred miles apart. The first was my routine Thursday flea market. It was bitter cold, but I managed to find a Herbrand compression tester, a Walden valve lapper, a 1941 Snappy socket and a Plomb WF-74 swivel. Then I drove down to Twertsy's shop in Northern Virginia. I am picking my daughter up from college in DC for break, so the timing was perfect. He took pity on me and let me scrounge through his scrap bins where I managed to find some interesting pieces. Photos later. Sitting here waiting for Thing #4, then hitting the long road home.

Hey Lugz! It sounds like you were in my neck of the woods today! I took off to help my daughter move so today was truck loading day. Tomorrow it's off to the courthouse to see my son and his wife finalize adoption on his little boy and then we take off with the truck early Saturday morning. I will be watching for any TOOs.

you **** on that deal

We have a near identical one hanging at our farm/elevator probably in the 60" range - very rarely gets used but nothing much better when you need to take a sample.
More modern systems use an remote controlled arm and vacuum system:

I saw this on a vintage items identification thread and nobody has been able to identify it yet. Apparently it says Lincoln on one site and Detroit on the other.

I thought this group might have some ideas...

FYI - I finally got out this year and bought a handful of stuff. I am in the midst of helping my daughter move and am not sure when I will get a chance to post pics.

You guys are killing it!

Dudley,

That looks like a "key" to latch the panic bar on a commercial door - there are at least three sizes out there, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. Pretty common item on a custodian's key ring!

Great finds everyone -- Mike the EE

Lugz, I'll keep that in mind sir.
At the moment the Heliograph is a rather fun item on my fire place that my friends and family like to talk/mess with.

But if I find a time where it could move on I'll give you first offer on it :)

It certainly is a toolhound wonderland! This was my second visit, and my jaw was no less slack this time around. That would be a no on the 'Stang, but he did take the wraps off a brandspankin' newly built engine he was allv lined up to drop into the GTO. (You could shave your face in the reflection off the near 1,000HP blowers!)

Totally understand. I'll keep looking.

I'm at an IHOP in Baltimore. Photos later!

It's been a while since I got something.
Saw an ad on CL - the drawers looked familiar, but there was not picture of the cover plate. E-mailed a seller and picked it up today after making an offer.
Beach B26, 30+ years old per nice gentleman from whom I bought it. It will take me a while to clean it from the stickers (+ who knows what's under - I pealed one to the side and saw a + sign in a circle made with a permanent marker...)
There is no key - if the PO finds it (planned to look for it tomorrow), he will text me (I hope it happens!!!)

If anybody know if it's still possible to get the keys (there is a code on it), please let me know. To the best of my knowledge, Beach is no longer in business in Canada (and was never imported to US)

If you have the code, take the lock cylinder to a real lock smith and they can cut you a key, They need the lock to get the right key blank.

Here are today's flea finds...

attachment.php

Here is what I picked up and slipped away with after pawing through Twertsy's Oddlot/Overflow/Scrap bins... (When you're the kind of collector who has so many tools that other collectors come to pick through your offcasts, you are King of the Heap!)

attachment.php

The 'SERVICE' marked box set is a complement to my King & Newton Pressed Steel sets from the 20's, made by King/Newton for Service Engineering. (I will be posting more photos after cleanup in my Roaring 20's thread. This was a generous gift among co-researchers.)

On top of the box is a cool little unmarked hex drive universal joint.

The little red socket box is a big super secret trade midget set that confirms a puzzle I solved. (I will be posting more photos on a thread to be named later.)

Surrounding those, clockwise from 7 o'clock to 5 o'clock, are:
a pair of pliers I don't have for my Schollhorn BERNARD collection, a Park (later Excelite) removable multi-head SOE wrench, K.R. Wilson WWII SOE wrench, some Peugot wrenches I thought Outlaw might need for his burgeoning collection, BONNEY tappet wrench, Wakefield #19, two antiques for my Mueller-Braunsdorf collection, Battery Temrinal wrench, 21/64" ignition wrench, Wakefield #45, grind-off obstruction wrench, Mossberg DOE, Roebling "Alligator" pattern wrench with P&R marking, and finally, a Sharples Separator Company tool (pin spanner on one end, face spanner on the other)

Pic 3 is a nickel-plated Syracuse wrench set I tried my darndest to talk him out of but he wouldn't budge!

Briefly, at 75MPH! :)

Oily,
Here is the Heliograph tripod. If there are any markings on the Heliograph, please transcribe them. I'm curious if it's a functional match (i.e., does it have a provision to screw into the tripod receptacle?), and if it's also an actual by name match! The tripod is a P.B. & S. Ltd. (which is Puddefoot, Bowers, and Simonett), a Mk III. Oh, and it was made in 1942.

Thank you, Outlawmws! It's a Canadian made box which was never sold in USA. Would they be able to cut the key by the code?

Not that many key types for the toolbox locks, all they need is to find the right profile shape to fit. after that its easy. (If not cheap. my last cut key was $25...)

Thank you! May be I get lucky and the PO finds it tomorrow... otherwise I will have to call the locksmith at some point...$25 sounds expensive though... SO (Or factory who made their keys back in the day) charged me around $9
