I'm hoping somebody bought it to restore and keep not just flip it on eBay

I’m hoping they flip it for a reasonable price, at least I’ll have a chance at it. I’m pretty sure it’s a 19, the handle would appear shorter on an 18

Ok 19 it is. I was just going by the description but they may have misread the casting

The general population out there has for most part no clue about old vises. It is possible and will be ironic if the person bought just to use it and has no clue what it really is worth.

True and could very well be the case. "Hey look hon, remember how I've been wanting a vise for the garage" lol

It was an educated guess, I could be wrong. The jaw width will tell the tale. Can you post the original ad?
18- 2 5/8
19- 3 1/2

Picked this Athol 323 1/2 X today for $60. Nice and clean.

Anyone know what the 'X' stands for?

Apologies for the double post. Hey Joe- very nice looking $60vise . Congratulations as those bargains seem to be fewer and further apart from my point of view. Josh

Spotted this swivel base/ rear swivel jaw Rock Island today. Jaws are either 7 or 8”. I could not get any closer to inspect. The spreadsheet shows a model 56 as a 7”. This beauty is in the museum area at Mount Rushmore.

With those prices the emphasis seems to be exclusively on the threasure rather than junk:bounce:

That is quite an eclectic collection of items! Is this an antique shop somewhere near you? Or is some kind of estate sale?

Yeah, I’d like to see the CCTV footage of my face as I turned the the corner an saw the vise.its a local establishment that I like to walk through on the weekends. I got the little guy for $88, I’m going to call him Dale Jr.

For $88 that is a good score. Now you have to find a base for it

Thanks Gman. Yeah, a base would really enhance the vise. I seem to remember you posting a Simple Green soaking procedure for vises a while back. Would you mind posting it again?

Smitty I’ve been heating simple green and it works extremely well I use a large pot and a hot plate.

I got the idea from Loydski29. Works REALLY well. I’m using a discarded crockpot for the cookin’.

Here is a little piece of craftsmanship. The machining quality is that of brilliant man the chamfers and radii are perfect without flaw. Definitely probably one of my favorite vises.

I have used Simple Green without heating in the past with good results. But based on Loydski’s and Shift’s positive experience with heating it, personally next time I will try this approach as well.
