I had a feeling the vendors would be out in droves at my flea market this morning when I saw the weather report last night (clear, 50*F at 8AM), and boy was I right.

I am not entirely 100% sure about the Infantry pack frame (hard to tell in the harsh morning sunlight of this photo, but the wood is painted green), but I think it's Swiss Army. I know the straps and padding, at least, were made in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1918, by K. Leuch Sattlerei. (There is an Interlaken, NJ, believe it or not, not too far from me, but it is a prestigious residential only shore town with no history of industry, and even if there was a saddlery there it would be spelled SADDLER, not SATTLER.) And the Swiss town of Interlaken is known for its leatherworks. They probably made the whole pack frame. Switzerland had an Army but was technically neutral during WWI. That didn’t stop them from commerce and dealing with both sides, however, so it might've been made for one of the armies involved. I have to do more research. Either way, it's WWI and Army for sure. I didn’t hang it on a scale yet, but it weighs at least 35 pounds. And that's empty! I can’t imagine what it was like with ammunition cases mounted on it.

The tools, left to right, top to bottom:
- antique unmarked tiny hand vise for my jeweler's bench
- NOS pack of E.C. Simmons KEEN KUTTER razor blades
- A PLVMB 1041 DBE, one of those heavy duty wartime jobbies with the U.S. Standard bolt size markings and the opening size in parens. This one is a 1/2 USS (7/8) x 5/8 USS (1-1/16)
- antique DISSTON No. 1 saw set
- a funky Herbrand Van-Chrome socket, J-43, 3/8-inch dr, with a beveled, internal knurling in the service opening, and a notch-out in the wall of the socket (need to look it up)
- various tappet wrenches
- antique North Bros "YANKEE" No. 10 spiral screwdriver with a screw holder (Campbell) patented in 1902 I have never seen before!
- three different shaped K-D special 3/8-inch socket drive attachments

Cool vintage pack, Lugz. I certainly wouldn't want to tote that anywhere, empty or loaded!

I moved from OKC to SLC and again had time to kill. I hit up both ReStores in and around town and found nada. So, I made a short detour to the home of Bitchin' Rides. I didn't go in but I snapped a picture:84f03d3c3743953f8e275aec82e8b74d.jpg

Some more from today’s adventure.

The husky 17mm is for my friends set I’m putting together. I didn’t have any that I’d be comfortable giving him. Appearance wise. He is working in a shop environment and these polished tools will look better and clean up easier.

Also was able to complete my junkyard wrench roll of SAE wrenches I’d be comfortable using at the junkyard... but as always, my collection is ever evolving...

I already had this Plomb keychain screwdriver, bought my dad the matching Proto Professional for his bday.

Both are black oxide, NOS, and bear no advertising on the rear side.

Lugz,

You're a better authority on wartime stuff than I, but would a WWII wrench have had the USS markings? Or do you mean WWI?

First score of the year for me! I found this on Facebook Marketplace... He threw in a bunch of odds and ends as well (including an almost complete kobalt USA metric/saw 1/4 and 3/8 kit)

I saw the box and got excited, then I saw what was inside and got even MORE excited!! HOLY PROTO!!
It's a close to complete set, and there are some missing from the pictures that are in the garage in the other box of stuff he threw in. In the other stuff was a newer Armstong 1/2 standard length rachet, bunch of random USA wrenches mixed with some kobalt wrenches, as well as a mostly complete set of Pittsburg SAE impact sockets up to 1 1/4! All for the grand total ooooof... $25!! I was PUMPED!

Lugz,

Normally, no, they're way past that era, BB, and you'd be absolutely correct, which is exactly what makes these so odd, interesting, and noteworthy among Plomb collectors!

Note that the logo is no earlier than 1936, so they can't be early, when early markings for bolt sizes (USS, SAE, Hex cap etc) instead of opening sizes were typically used, and they don't show up in a Plomb catalog until 1939. Also, they are not plated, and they are among a very small handful of Plomb tools, similar in construction, also including structural ("spud") wrenches, all having wartime features, that show up with these alternate markings. Also seen is "A.S." which I have analyzed (based on the opening size they are shown with in parens, and subsequent lookups in my Machinery's Handbook) as American Standard.

One theory is that they are Lend-Lease. A bolt or nut size and the broached opening size on the shank might be useful to non-Americans working on American equipment with American fasteners.

Another theory is some arcane spec in one of their military contracts.

Nothing special today.

The serving plate is for one of my brothers. We were Pennsyltucky born and raised and he still lives there. Looks like someone had it tacked up to a pole for garage art, but he will probably think the same thing as me - that it would be good and funny to serve venison steaks and chops on it. :)

I had to call my doctor to check on my last tetanus shot before touching the loop coping saw, but I found that with the NOS box (1 gross) of loop coping saw blades in the bottom of a box that had been forgotten about a long time ago. I don't think either one was ever used. I don't know if the saw is also marked C. W. Griffin (Franklin, N.H., anybody ever hear of it?), but I am pretty sure they go together. Guessing 50's, maybe 60's, based on the box.

Before bed last night I spotted these on Craigslist locally. They're in my garage now. Wish I had room to keep them. They looked like Vidmar to me. The ad said they were Vidmar but where are they marked Vidmar because I didn't see anything? The 9-drawer has had some "enhancements" added to it. These cabinets are nice as all get out! Sadly my wife thinks her car is more important such that I can't keep these in her parking spot.

Edit: Looking at new Vidmar cabinets I see there's a badge in the upper left corner of the face. Anyone know if these are marked elsewhere like say with a stamp? Are these actually Vidmar cabinets?

These measure 30" wide x 28" deep x 44" tall.

Thanks!

Got this from an online estate auction but I can't seem to find a rebuild kit for it. It is a Par-X UR70 and the rebuild kits I've seen are for UR7. Anyone know the vintage?

Althought the head looks similar, Williams follow the later 936 line of ratchets.

Try contacting Snapmom. The UR7 is a 1/4”.

Edit, sorry I mixed it up with the 1/2” part number.

No wonder the wind is from the east today. All the air is headed to Oregon.

Yeah that's what caught my eye. I had a hard time leaving a lot of stuff behind today but was focusing my money elsewhere. The guy had a large box full of nothing but odd ball wrenches. If he still has it next time I stop in I plan to make him an offer on the entire box.

Im off to a great start. Picked up an Ilco NPN100/KM 190 portable key duplicator with a bunch of keys and key cabinet, all for $60. Runs perfect after running a test key. The nice gentleman who i picked it up from is helping clear out a shop that ran from 1920 to 1972 by two brothers and their father. He had an entire section dedicated to NOS chevy parts. Ill have to come back later on because he says he has about 2 more trailers with mechanic tools and machines ranging from the 20's to the early 70's.

The box of keys has a bunch of chevy looking ones too, anyone need a cut chevy key? Lol

I found a last minute posting on Craigslist of a tool heavy garage sale in Concord, CA this morning. My wife and I were going through the toolboxes quickly because there were a few other customers looking at the same time but we had a pretty fruitful day. The first shot is most everything, the second a cool drill index with quite a few bits. The next shot is the Plomb/Proto/P&C finds followed by S-K and Snap-on/Blue Point. Next are some Crescent wrenches and a GMTK correct WW2 unmarked McAleer toolbox. There were some more finds that I’ll post in their respective threads in the vintage section.

Nice haul D42! Love the index!

JM, what is in the tank and the DeWalt box?
The tank is a 100lb propane tank to run my shop heater and the hammer drill came in the dewalt case. The insert comes out so I'm going to use it to store my main dewalt kit.
