Wife came back from a business trip last night, so I thought I would give her a little decomp time this AM and hit a barn sale that was outside of town aways. It had been going for a while, so it was pretty picked over, but it is amazing what people will miss.

Two classic tool boxes, which look much worse than they are. Thought the hinge on the Craftsman is shot and will need a piano hinge if I don't scrap it for the logo badge. I have never seen an SK Wayne like this, so of course, it came home with me.

I grabbed a few things while I was out there also. Plomb 1/4 socket, 6" monkey wrench, 12" Williams adjustable, brass nozzle, Proto screw extractor pouch, Cornwell 7/16 wrench, New Britan vise grips, P&C feeler gauge and a mill bit cardboard tube. $5 for everything.

Ok got to admit have a weak spot for clean vice grips, oldish tape measures, and those small screwdriver sets. The best find was the duro 699, works great after a bit of oil.

That is a Stanley 30. Quite expensive if it has all the parts and all the chrome. Never seen a craftsman version before.

It's got all the pieces and I think a date with Evaporust will take care of the surface rust. Don't see any evidence of pitting. Any idea the year range on those? I've looked in what catalogs I have access to and can't find it.EDIT: And thanks for the ID

If you guys are talking about the angle finder, Long C generally ended ~1947. It was fuzzy between 1946 and 1948, with some hand tools still having the Long C, some having the Heritage logo. But in general Long C is not thought to be much later than 1948.

Picked these up for a song.

A friend of mine needs metrics, so I’m taking this opportunity to upgrade my backup box. I’ll put these in my backup box and then sell my back up box metrics to my friend.

The snap on isn’t metric, but I figured why not, right? It was there. The wright isn’t a WRIGHTGrip, but still VERY nice.... I usually don’t buy tools with owner marks, but I think these marks are light enough that they may sand/polish out easily.

Happy hunting everyone!!!!

Went to an auction Saturday. I got some 3/4, 5/8 and 1/2” drive sockets. Also Proto 3/4 breaker bar and extensions. a3b44111919e335941c744ae6dc07f33.jpg
I got this snap on creeper seat for $5. I already put a new cover on it in the picture above. Not a bad day.

Google says there is a 1903 patent, but no idea when production stopped. http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?pn=742528&id=14073

Thanks for the patent info pfaustus. Lugz...thanks and I agree. I recently picked up a 1/2" NB made rat set that I found interesting. In a Heritage steel case, the rat and about 1/2 the sockets had the Long C logo, the logo on the other half of the sockets and most of the other drive tools was the logo used on their next gen rats and sockets from MDF. I figure that set was right at the end of the Long C era as the first MDFs were coming out (48 if I'm not mistaken). I found it strange that the logo changed on the NB-made tools right at the end of their run. I learn something new every day.

Yeah, that whole transition period was nutty. I don't have any, but I have heard of sets like yours before. In some figures in the 1948 catalog, New Britain (H) and BE tools with Long C logos are literally laid out in the same figures with MDF =CRAFTSMAN= logo tools. Much more common are sets with all Long C tools and Heritage =CRAFTSMAN= badge on the box.

EDIT: I suspect your angle finder is earlier though with that true Looooong C (i.e., not a clipped long C or geometric, which came in near the end). And I can't find it on the 'precision tools' pages in any of the 40's catalogs. Just the protractor style angle finder and a multi-function thing they sold (ruler, protractor, etc). I don't have any 30's catalogs.

Went a little wild at the flea market this week. At first I wasn’t finding anything, then hit those stands where the deals were too good. In the end I left with a nice pile of tools but went way over budget with other non-tool finds as well.
Also, I had the pleasure of meeting another long time Garage Journal member and tool aficionado who just doesn’t post as often as some of us . Some of my finds came from him that day.

The haul.

Thanks Lugz. The BP is a 12 oz.

Here are some pics of the Hastee-8. I see OTG posted one in that thread. The only real difference appears appears to be a decal vs embossed markings.

Hard to take pics that match, but you know how these type of wrenches work, so.This one took me a few minutes to figure out.

Push the head way to the left, disengaging teeth, and the jaw slides free. Line up top line with one of the three bottom lines for diffent fastener size range, and let go of head. Teeth lock in place. If your fastener is in that range, the spring force keeps the wrench closed on it.

For this 3/4 head lag bolt, the lines were set to position 2, and the spring does the rest.

Still putting a metric set together for my friend. Actually, I’m upgrading my spare box and he is getting my old but still new spares, and a mix of what I pick up along the way. I have a feeling that he will be VERY happy about what he gets :)

Picked up a snap on, easco, s-k Wayne, Bonney and a few no names since the price was right. The easco and S-K Wayne and Bonney aren’t metric, but I couldn’t pass them up.....

Im a tool ADDICT! Other people smoke crack. I buy tools....

Just got home from picking these up.

SK speed handle (I think that’s what these are called)

Proto spark plug socket in 13/16 since my dodge has 13/16 spark plugs

SK lectrolite 5/8” wrench

Husky 1/2” wrench

Snap on 1/4”x5/16” DOE

That is all for today. I think. I hope....

It's been a wet and cold year so far for me. So, tools are few and far between. But I did find a guy local who was selling this 1966 U.S. Milspec Coleman lantern. Works well and for $25, I'm not complaining!

Had some free time during a biz trip to OKC, and checked out the Restore on the north side of town. No tools to speak of, so it's off for lunch at Toby Keith's place in the Brickworks.

It's been a busy 2019 for me so far. I've got to go back and catch up on about the last 20 pages of this thread!

I finally made it to the flea today for the first time this year. It's still below freezing and snowing again today. I did manage to bring home a few things.
The dial indicator has some paperwork for Brown and Sharpe, but the gauge is a Starrett. Looks mostly complete in it's heavy steel case.
Also found the empty Thorsen 1/2" drive box with one socket, Bluegrass utility knife and 6" aluminum level, complete midget Makita nut driver set, KD battery strap, myriad of wrenches include OTC, Vlchek Plomb, SK, Mac, Wizard. Sockets include Keystone, SnapOn, Blackhawk, Cornwell. And the bonus 3/8" drive Intestro ratchet.
Not too shabby for a snowy Sunday.

Username sent me the Thorsen box from this post and I spent the morning yesterday filling it with period correct Thorsen tools. Thanks again!

Very cool find Username! I'm not a lantern guy per se but I'd love to find one of those in that condition.

Don That's cool. You just "filling it with Thorsen tools" or does this represent a Thorsen set from back in the day?

My burger was yummy, and I had some extra time after my afternoon meetings, so I hit up the south side ReStore. Same situation as the north. On to the airport!

To tell the truth, I just went through and found sockets that matched the vintage of the box and gathered the drive tools that I had that seemed appropriate and fit. I felt like the deep sockets would have been an add on to the set that probably came in the box. I may do some research and take pictures of how it should have looked from the factory. I think that I should have had an early u-joint but all the ones I had were marked USA. I'll need to dig out my flyer.
-Don

Edit. The box probably started out containing one of these sets. I'm in the ballpark. Probably should add a flex handle too.
